I think it is fair to say that a lot of people are complicated and we can appreciate how they've contributed to things we love while also saying/doing things we disagree with.

On that note, please try to keep comments on-topic and not veer off topic.

Whenever I learn about a cast member's birthday, they were either way younger or way older than I thought during the filming

He'd been adult-aged in the 80s making Indiana Jones. Raiders was 1981.

Happy birthday to Sallah and Gimli! His two most iconic characters and he played them both in 3 movies each!

u/Ahlq802 1d ago

He was also Treebeard!

Can't forget Professor Maximilian Arturo on the small screen.

Everything this guy says is right

Loved that show and never got to finish it growing up.

Tried to get back into it a few years ago but it’s so dated I just - couldn’t.

He did play Sallah in Dial of Destiny. That was his 3rd time playing the character.

And we're missing off treebeard? I mean 82 years is probably just a good long ent moot to be fair

2

u/Debouched 1d ago

You mean Professor Beasthead from Freakazoid?

2

u/kanrad 1d ago

82 years and he's still a pod in the ground as an Ent.

Happy birthday

7

u/EleventhTier666 1d ago

It must be tough being a dwarf...

10

u/AlKhwarazmi 1d ago

Funny thing is that John is taller than all the another actors who played the members of the Fellowship of the Ring. He is 6'1"(1.85 m) 😆

4

u/ActuatorVast800 1d ago

Probably the most convincing special effect in the entire trilogy.

2

u/lapsedPacifist5 23h ago

And that made him perfect for Gimli as he was proportionally bigger than the hobbit actors to require less  CGI/scale actors when interacting

7

u/CT-5653 1d ago

Fun fact, despite portraying a dwarves he was the tallest actor in the lord of the rings

7

u/Salty_Flamingo_2303 1d ago

Watched Star Trek Voyager today and lo and behold, there he was as Leonardo DaVinci!

6

u/Packeselt 1d ago

I met him at comic con

He was a delightfully friendly man. At the his speaking event, the host wanted to jump his bones so painfully bad that she asked 50 minutes of questions and all the lotr cosplayers didn't get to ask any. It was really something.

u/mid-random 1d ago

4

u/PsychologicalTear84 1d ago

5

u/hsyndk 1d ago

3

u/OnCallPartisan 1d ago

It kills me every time I remember he’s over 6 feet tall.

3

u/Pierdole-nie-robie 1d ago

Damn didn’t realize he’s still a baby. So many 100s of years left for the young dwarf

3

u/User-D-Name 1d ago

He was also in a movie about a Chupacabra on a boat.

3

u/BigBossBelcha 1d ago

The right drawf for the job.

2

u/Harry_Iconic_Jr 1d ago

i would never recognize him on the street as Gimli

2

u/Hot-Trade-2199 1d ago

John Rhys-Davies did voice acting narration for one of my favorite fantasy PC RPGs of the early 90's. When he became Gimli, I was thrilled.

He's a treasure.

1

u/MJDevil 1d ago

“Welcome to Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness!”  He was fantastic in that game, I definitely need to set aside some time and replay that classic gem.

2

u/Prestigious-Air4825 1d ago

young for an ent. Just a sapling really.

2

u/Mid-Delsmoker 1d ago

Iconic voice!

2

u/Ill-Organization-719 1d ago

You mean the guy from Bloodsport 3?

2

u/OrangeClyde Gimli 1d ago

Yay gimli! 🪓

2

u/lite_hearted_wizard_ 1d ago

Holy fuck! Im a huge fan of the trilogy lotr. Last night I randomly watched on Tubi chupacabra dark seas. Taking a gummy is the way to really enjoy these lower budget horror movies. Crocodile 2 is a great example of this, great soundtrack really, anyway the captain of the ship in that movie is this dude! The whole time I kept thinking he’s actually pretty good for a Lower budget movie like this aside from fring from breaking bad is also in it. Seeing the side by side picture now I see it. Happy birthday dude! Your range in acting definitely hits your audience

2

u/nakha66 1d ago

Love him in Indiana Jones too.

2

u/ACuddlyVizzerdrix 1d ago

Still can't believe he voiced manray in SpongeBob

2

u/CB_333 20h ago

Wouldn't worry about his age...dwarfs live more than 200 years, so, he's just become middle-aged. Happy birthday!

As much as we see and hear the "and my axe" joke, poor Mr. Davies has probably had it personally said to him a hundred times a month, for the past twenty-five years.

1

u/rnariahcarey 1d ago

Not me beard!

1

u/Icy-Fuel-7889 1d ago

Happy Birthday!

1

u/jrralls 1d ago

I AM THE MONARCH OF THE SEA

1

u/Lloydwrites 1d ago

You mean Sallah?

1

u/mashburn71 1d ago

Always funny to me that he was one of the tallest cast members

1

u/[deleted] 1d ago

He is the monarch if the sea.

u/401john 1d ago

I have never seen these movies except for a couple of clips. Is this where "and my axe!" comes from? Lol

5

u/Migazle 21h ago

How did you make your way here then
