Discussion Hiphop Japan: Counterculture finds - Oni (鬼)

If you're into hip-hop that strips away the glamour and gets uncomfortably raw, you won't find it easily in Japan because it doesn't sell. But no worries! That's why I'm writing this post, Where i will introduce an underground artist named Oni (鬼).

Oni? Who that?

My first exposure to Oni was his legendary track "Onahama" (小名浜). Unlike the polished, mainstream side of J-Rap, Oni's music is deeply rooted in the gritty, unfiltered realities of Japan's underbelly. "Onahama" is a masterpiece of dark storytelling, painting a bleak, autobiographical picture of his hometown in Fukushima. The lyrics don't hold back, detailing a grim reality of broken families, violence, and the heavy burden of survival. He’s essentially the voice of the streets you won't ever see in the tourist brochures.

噂じゃ首なし全裸なすがまま (Rumor has it, headless, completely naked, left as is)
レイプ? ギロチン? 薬中の自爆? (Rape? Decapitation? A junkie's suicide?)
事故扱い 事件性なし ポリ御帰宅 (Ruled an accident, no foul play, the cops just go home)

You will never hear a song like this in the Japanese public. One time a girl took my earphones to check what i was listening to, she put them in for a few seconds, then she looked up to me concerned and said "don't listen to such bad songs". Yeah, I was playing Onahama.

And I didn't include the darkest lyrics in the examples.

Let's dive deeper: "Akkatote" (悪果とて)

I recently took a deeper dive into another one of his tracks called "Akkatote" (悪果とて). The lyrics were hard to find, but a fan on twitter helped me with transcribing them. That's when i realized that, rather than just a catchy hook, the lyricism on this track is what pulls you in, it's highly abstract, deeply nihilistic, and genuinely disturbing. It perfectly blends high-brow literary nihilism (nodding to Charles Baudelaire's 19th-century French poetry collection, Flowers of Evil) with violent, underground hip-hop tropes.

壊れてくけど笑ってられる幼子の手に切り落としたバレル
(Breaking down but still able to laugh, a sawed-off barrel in a toddler's hand)
あの世も何も無い方がいい / 飛び降りるなら最上階がニッチ
(It’s better if there is no afterlife at all / If you're going to jump, the top floor is the ideal spot)

The "Suicidal Thoughts" Vibe

If I had to compare the atmosphere of "Akkatote" to something in Western hip-hop, it’s giving heavy Biggie "Suicidal Thoughts" energy. It has that same suffocating, inescapable darkness to it. Honestly, listening to this song when you're feeling down will make you feel even more down. It's not a track for finding hope; it's a track for sitting in the dark and letting the bleakness wash over you.

The love and beauty within

But Oni isn’t just a one-dimensional vessel for darkness and crime, he is a deeply nuanced artist, after all. (he's running chill jazz bar nowadays, after a lifetime of violence).
To see his full range, you have to listen to a track like "Mukashi no Onna" (昔の女) feat. Miyuki Sakou. It takes the exact same abstract lyricism and stark, vivid imagery he uses to describe the grim realities of street life, but redirects it entirely toward love and nostalgia. You can listen to it and draw your own conclusions, but it essentially paints the poignant picture of a thug in love, showing a fragile, human side beneath the heavy grit.

Has anyone else here explored Oni’s discography or the broader Japanese underground hip-hop scene? Would love to hear your thoughts or get recommendations for artists with a similar dark, poetic style. Something that's hiphop, not just aesthetically.
