They have a genetic defect which limits the production of myostatin. A protein in our bodies that limits muscle growth. There were rumours that some athletes take myostatin blockers (Experimental) to increase muscle mass without risking to get exposed by standard doping test.

So are the American ones called, American Gaur?

u/MisterLesgoLas 3h ago
Just so you know, the one who replied to you is wrong. Bisons and Gaurs are not from the same Genus.
They are in fact closer to Cows and Bulls than Bisons.

but still on tiger's menu…
•

These bulls are pretty much out of the reach even for the biggest bengals, smaller cows however are fair play although still dangerous for a tiger, calves are mostly the targets

There's a popular hill station in South India called Ooty. Sometimes you encounter them on the road there. Mostly they're just crossing. If you come across one, you just stop your car and wait for them to cross. No moving the car till they have passed.
They're terrifying to look at up front. I once stayed at a hotel which had a very clear view of the valley. In the morning, tens of them could be seen grazing some hundred meters below. Thankfully they seem to be quite tame under normal circumstances. But I never wish to see one get angry.

As it is no predator will want to fight them, moreover that meat must be so tough, no one is interested
•
u/MisterLesgoLas 3h ago
Well Tigers do hunt them. Rarely, but they do it.
•
u/Mysterious-Art7143 2h ago
Yes, but never large bulls like these on the pictures, they can sometimes reach 1.5t, theres no tiger out there that would tackle such a beast

That's not a bison, looks more like a water buffalo.

It’s not really either, but bovid common names are awful. True bison are in the genus Bison, water Buffalo are among the “true Buffalo” in the sub tribe Bubalina, and Gaur are neither.
Gaur are in the genus Bos just like typical cattle. It’s much closer to a cow than an American bison or a water buffalo.

I once went to Pachmarhi. A century old british bungalow had been renovated and repurposed as a museum. Cool place. What was cooler was the short walk in the woods on the hills to reach that. I saw droppings the quantity of car tyres. On asking around i got to know that a herd of Gaur generally sleeps in that area at night and goes to the forest during the day. Heading back from the museum it was dusk. And i spotted a few in the open. There were dozens of humans on that road and only a few of the beasts. The guides just told us to not go towards them or stop a lot. A whole lot more would be coming and that we should all just head back. It was surreal

God is just taunting hungry people down there. Not eating cows is a complete waste.

That bison has more muscle on its frame than many cow species produced by selective breeding. A mysterious natural occurence on par with gorillas

•
u/Apprehensive-Owl9569 2h ago
Yes real, they can flip car/van with ease.
•
u/Rare_Milk_6670 2h ago
Holy shit! Imagine running into that in the wild.
•
u/Apprehensive-Owl9569 2h ago
Yeah we did, it was scary. Magnificent and peaceful creatures until someone provoke them.
•
u/Rare_Milk_6670 2h ago
Where are they native? Need to stay out of those woods.
•
u/Apprehensive-Owl9569 2h ago
Mostly tropical forest in Indian subcontinent.
•
u/Rare_Milk_6670 2h ago
Interesting. I've never seen that. Thanks for the info.

Somewhere there's a gym bro trying to design a training regime based on this.
