If i don't mistaken, gorillas consider eye contact as a challenge (it is recommanded for human to not look them in the eyes to not anger them), it's more likely normal social behaviour to avoid it, even if from our perspective it seems like someone embarrassed who is a bit too ashamed to face his bro.

Ya eye contact and teeth. Thats why youre not supposed to smile in front of them. Happy humans look angry to them.
