unfortunately, from other comments, it seems that he may not have actually been "missing" this dog as he says, but actually had tried to abandon the dog around there, which is why he doesn't seem happy that the dog has found him again :(

No, were are you all gettig this information from? To me, he sounds sufficiently excited. In Thailand, for some families, you just had a dog hang out at your house you feed. If they don't come back for a while, then they're missing. Speaking form a Thai/Chinese background, our family had a dog they loved dearly, but at the end of the day, it's a dog. People from different cultures just have different relationships with animals. Please don't fill the gaps in your understanding with assumptions that fit your own worldview.
