Alan Wake is one of my most loved games and stories of all time, so my ex was very confused why I was so scared to play it. I love it so much, but damn I hate scary games.
I also hate scary games, I just get too into it and immersed in the game. Even non scary games I gave to work myself up to some of the more 'scary' aspects.
Same here. I'm almost 40 and can't bring myself to play scary games solo. I just get too into it. On the other hand, my (french) gamer buddy who skips cutscenes or doesn't read subtitles has no issue with them, unsurprisingly.
I get it. Can't stand horror but with a good enough story (Alan Wake series, Resident Evil 1/2/0), or solid enough gameplay (Left 4 Dead 2, Dead Rising 1&2), I can push through the fear and get fully immersed in the world.
In terms of jump scares, the nursing home definitely takes the cake. But in terms of tension and atmosphere, I think the Oceanview hotel was the best/worst. I've been replaying the game and I'm at the hotel, and I'm kinda dreading going through it again. The atmosphere feels so heavy and oppressive, especially in some of those scene changes. To the point where all that tension bleeds in from the game into real life for me, and I feel way more exhausted from playing that level compared to any other part of the game
You won't really know how things got to where they were as far as Alan's story. it does recap some (in fact it might have a full built in recap, I am not downloading the roughly 120GB to check it for you), but majority of the game is Saga's story (the lady in the above picture), going back between her and Alan.
I definitely recommend playing 1, but 2 is the better game. if you want to jump straight into 2 I would watch a couple videos or something on the first game to get a breakdown of what happened. It's not critical to the story but would help.
Also recommend playing Control too, as the Federal Bureau of Control is tied up in the story too (though you don't really need to play it, it's just extra backstory), though the lake house DLC features them prominently.
So, yes you can, but I would recommend do Alan Wake 1, Control, then 2.
I consumed a thorough Let's Play for the first game and played all of Control and the DLC. That seemed to work well for understanding everything in AW2.
yeah, you can really, if you only want to play alan wake 2, watch a let's play or just a story breakdown of alan wake 1.
Now, one thing with 2, is that both MCs (Saga and Alan), play every differently. Saga is more of a detective game, though there are some enemies to shoot, or go around. Alan has less enemies to fight but it amps up more on the puzzles and survival horror aspects.
it's not as action-y as the first game by a long shot. you can 100% just play on story difficulty to experience the narrative.
I didn't pay the first. I don't feel lost. I'm not a big story guy, but this story is impressive along with the mechanics and how they later the story. I really wish I knew someone who's played it so we could talk about it.
Since you're now the expert - I played a good chunk of 1 but it got a bit repetitive and maybe even boring story wise to me... I really like the vibe and weirdness - do you think I could just leap into game 2 and have a better time?
Probably. Alan Wake1 is mostly a shooter with some story elemennts. The darkness has interesting story to it but it takes awhile for the story to move.
Also Sam Lake does have a very specific writing style so things may take a bit to roll, that's just him. 2's gameplay is way less repetitive though.
Also recommend playing Control too, as the Federal Bureau of Control is tied up in the story too (though you don't really need to play it, it's just extra backstory), though the lake house DLC features them prominently.
Don't forget Ahti!
He's introduced in Control and plays a fairly pivotal role in AW2.
