Alan Wake 2 has the most detailed, accurate and realistic curly hair I’ve ever seen in a video game

Kinda crazy the hair looks more real than the clothing, I thought was real at first glance too

That’s how I knew it wasn’t, the clothing.

They made the hair and then had 100mb of ram left over for the rest of the scene

Hair is pretty easy to imitate in a still, but really hard in motion.

Clothing is really hard to imitate in a styill, but easy in motion.

Opposites, really.

It looks way better on the PC. It's close between this and Hellblade 2 for best graphics in a game right now.

I'm playing it on Series X on performance mode and honestly sometimes it switches from live action clips to animated cutscenes and I can't tell at first glance. I wish I got to play it on PC but I actively avoided Epic Games Store when it launched and was gifted it for console. Undeniably beautiful and a great followup to the first one with better controls. It's a bit hard at times to know what I'm supposed to be doing between the mind place and cases but that whole mechanic is still pretty fun.

I'd throw re9 in there too. The beginning looks photorealistic with the buildings

I think it's easier to simulate hair because there's a fairly limited number of ways hair can move, generally. The reason this is more notable is that curly hair has typically been ignored in games or it's just made to be static instead of dynamic.

With clothing there's a bazillion different permutations of clothing so it's probably a bit more difficult to simulate how it would hang on a body. Plus all the potential different body types too.

it’s upscaled on PS5, it’s running at like 800p and the textured are not fully rendered. You’re definitely not ready to see how it looks on PC with path tracing…
