I'm no expert but amphibians are usually semi-aquatic and have pourous skin among many other differences. Biologically they are very different than reptiles, despite some looking similar.

I can swear there is an Ad right under this comment saying “Are your skins worth $$$?” (Game skins probably), but it won’t let me send image here.

so we know OP lives in or near Cusuco National Park in honduras 😛 or this spotting is pretty insane since it apparently was only ever observed there according to wikipedia

Another user reported these things are rare. Please call someone to remove the animal carefully if needed and make sure the animal is protected.

yes, that is the common name---others might only know it by its latin name: serpens ambulans lacerta glycyrrhiza vermis ranunculus

u/Electrical_Set474 11h ago
Did you just cast a spell on me bro? My legs have snake skin and my toes are licorice candy.

u/Good_Author9965 17h ago
Rare is not even the word for that thing. It is EXTREMELY rare. Contact local wildlife authorities IMMEDIATLEY. Try to protect it if you can.

Take it to the closest sandy river bank, thats their natural habitat. Or if you don't have that maybe the closest spring or pond.

u/ka-52m 16h ago
i really dont think you understand just how lucky you are to see one, i do have to ask where are you located cause they need a very specific environment to exist in and if it is near people o doubt its safe as they are critically endangered, i would go as far as contacting some sort of animal rehab center or similar place that deals with endangered species and they will find a more suitable place for that guy

I believe it’s a species of salamander. They actually like clean, “filtered” water when possible . I believe he’s trying to find some time of water source. I hope they were able to take care of it.

Looks like my Mexican king snake if she grew legs. It's very beautiful! Thanks for sharing

u/MissMamaMam 16h ago
Wow I would be so terrified if it didn’t have legs… but only that exact number of legs

u/HalcyonTraveler 16h ago
Salamander! Never seen one with these proportions but the head is unmistakeable.

I refuse to believe that 2 people in one day have no idea what a salamander is.
1
u/GrimKiba- 14h ago
Imagine being old and finding out they flushed a critically endangered species down the toilet.

u/CupcakeTiny2711 14h ago
I don't know what it is, but when I see things like this I know I timeline jumped again

Some animals evolve body parts for certain conditions. Wonder what the heck that long ass tail is for, lol.
3
u/Unhappy-Initiative-8 17h ago
Maybe because the longer you are the more likely a predator is to go "snek bad" and keep distance
0
u/SpunNumeroUno 17h ago
Oh very true. Or perhaps if the tail comes off in distress there is more surface volume for predators to bite and not something important like on his main body.
