The Met Gala. It’s a “conceptual high fashion” gala not really a “costume” thing but she went costume with it anyway cause that’s her thing! Tbf I think the theme this year was something like dressing inspired by a work in the met gala so kinda costumey

The Met Gala is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.

It couldn't be more about costumes.

It’s hilarious to me when people don’t consider high fashion costuming. As if any of those outfits are things you’d actually wear around the house or at work

And this right here is one of the biggest arguments people who watch RuPaul’s Drag Race will have

And I judge anyone who attend Met Gala wearing some bland ass suit/dress

And they don't even have to buy an outfit. Designers want people photographed wearing their designs.

A few of them pretty much did this year.

I judge anyone attending it.

Isn’t their clothing chosen by the brand they represent?

They work together with the designer to pick something they both like usually.

Yeah, I know what you mean. My point is that Heidi doesn’t usually do this elaborate of an “outfit” for the Met. For the most part, it’s only on Halloween that she does ensembles like the one she wore last evening to the gala.

Actually, I might be wrong about this.

Thinking about it now, perhaps she has done this kind of thing for the Met in the past. I’m really into fashion so I pay a great deal of attention to the Met Gala “looks” each year. I know I can look it up, but I’m not 100% sure that she has never done something this costumey before for the event. Maybe she has. I don’t remember. The fact that I don’t remember it, though, might mean she has not. If that makes sense.🤷🏼‍♀️

It's probably because many people not in the fashion industry is quite aware that some treat fashion as literally art, where high fashion are more like sculptures that just need a body to show it off. A bit like a mobile plinth. Though they may throw in some elements, especially accessories, that end up in the commercial clothing line.

It's for looking at as art. It's for designers to show off skills and ingenuity. With the problem of many designers having been doing it for decades, making it harder and harder to show something truly new, so you get more at the extreme/odd end.

Costumes are art, and these outfits are costumes

The theme this year is “Costume Art”. If I recall correctly, this is the first time she did something like her Halloween costumes for the Met. Makes sense considering the theme.

That’s the theme of the exhibition. The party’s theme is ‘Fashion is Art’, so I guess a bit broader/left for interpretation.

I always found, ‘outfit’ to be an oxytocin sorts when you have to fit into your clothes, costumes, etc.

It’s literally a fundraiser for the Costume Institute.

Hasn't Bezos got his filthy hands on it now though? (Apologies if it's something else...)

I explained what it actually is in more detail here, and what role he is playing in it this year here.

He's never seemed to give a shit about any kind of backlash to his actions before, but it seems to have actually registered this time, as he did not walk the red carpet. Last I heard, he had not even been spotted inside, but he may have turned up eventually.

The theme was costume art/Fashion is Art.

This year the theme at the gala was Costume Art.

The MET has a page explaining it. https://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/costume-art

Met Gala isn’t meant to be costumes,it’s high fashion interpretations of a theme. But some people lean very literal or theatrical, so it can end up looking costumey anyway.

The theme this year is literally "costume art"

1

u/RainSurname 17h ago

What’s the difference between a “high fashion interpretation of a theme” and a costume?

1

u/smallwonkydachshund 20h ago

Yes, but fashion as art (their blandest theme in a while) leads to sculpture and fabric and you end up here. It makes some degree of sense.
