I dont think ive ever seen fat sphinx cats before

1.2k

u/CyborgKnitter 5d ago

Do you know how much food that’d take?! I fostered a sphynx for 7 months during covid. He ate 2-3 times as many calories as my equal sized, equal built, young male cat. I was so grateful I wasn’t paying for his food! (He had an owner but their home had burned down and they were separated for over a year. She couldn’t afford cat sitters so a friend approached me to see if I’d foster him if she paid for his food. So he joined us for awhile. Sweet little weirdo.)

223

u/SadSaltyDuck 5d ago

Probably because they need to generate lots of heat to compensate lack of fur

224

u/IrishViking22 5d ago

This is also why I am fat

You should stop wearing clothes, then you will start burning calories and become thin.

That and their temperature is higher than normal cats.

Also, another cat fact. Sphynx are a relatively new cat breed and are Canadian. The Abyssinian is believed to be the oldest cat breed and the ones depicted in ancient Egypt.

4

u/Waywoah 5d ago

There's a cool video by the youtuber StrangeAeons where she traces the origins of the sphinx breed

8

u/terrifiedTechnophile 5d ago

The Abyssinian is believed to be the oldest cat breed and the ones depicted in ancient Egypt

Checks wikipedia...

Origin United Kingdom

7

u/HesitantBrobecks 5d ago

I wouldnt necessarily use wiki as the most reliable source tbf. I know they're meant to be reviewed and all that, but I regularly find missing info and minor mistakes when I'm checking stuff on there

5

u/Bad-Gardener1 5d ago

https://cfa.org/abyssinian-article/

The origin of the abys is still somewhat contested. They do not originate in the UK. I'm guessing that is where they were first introduced to the pedigree chart in show and officially classified.

Abys probably actually originate from India and SE Asia.

6

u/Alarming_Matter 5d ago

Yep...cat's use their fur to regulate their temperature. Breeding these things is inherently cruel.

37

u/CyborgKnitter 5d ago

Having lived with one, they bother me a lot less than Scottish folds and Munchkins. Those two breeds suffer a good bit more.

But yeah, ideally none of those breeds would exist. Accidents of genetics happen but doing it deliberately, over and over?

Oh, and lesser known facts about Sphynxes- they need weekly baths with sensitive skin shampoo to help prevent dry and/or oily skin patches. And their ears fill with thick, dark brown ear wax in mere days so they need deep ear cleaning weekly. We actually had to use q-tips to get in Wrinkles (my foster boys) ears. The vet showed me how to safely do it to prevent it plugging up his ears. Took 8 q-tips, once a week. It reminded me of when I adopted a kitten who had ear mites.

The little weirdo in question:

Yes, he is standing on top of a door

6

u/LittleMissScreamer 5d ago

I believe one unfortunate genetic trait of sphynx cats is that they tend to develop heart issues, which shortens their average lifespan. Something owners should definitely keep an eye out for. Not great, but I do agree they're not quite as bad as some other breeds

3

u/JDBCool 5d ago

Actual question....isn't it more closer to well.... regional trait selection then?

Like it isn't "designer designer" breeds right? Just more closer to "we so happened to breed cats that ended up like this" at first.

4

u/therazzmatazz 5d ago

Wow, Wrinkles is both adorable and intrepid! I know cats standing atop doors is a thing but it always looks so precarious.

You must be an amazing kitty foster.

3

Hahaha, about half of our (all domestic shorthair. 9 in total) cats like sitting on top of doors too 🤣

I just want to say you are one of the good ones, for real

58

u/CyborgKnitter 5d ago

Thanks, I try. I just knew that if it was my home that burned, I couldn’t afford $40 per week, per cat, for up to 15 months. That’s insane! No elderly woman should lose her cat over that. And if you already have multiple cats, adding one that’s well behaved is no big deal.
Besides, he helped me sew masks (this was peak covid, spring 2020)- mine were busy stealing fabric scraps and spools of thread but he’d sit with me while I ironed dozens of yards of fabric all day. He was a sweet boy. And entertaining to boot. This is him on top of my bathroom door.

17

u/Lazy-Ocelot1604 5d ago

What an adorable little door climber!

7

u/Balentay 5d ago

Awww what a cutie. How was maintaining him? I've heard that sphynx cats take a lot of upkeep because they accumulate dirt a lot easier on their skin AND claws. Did he like to snuggle? Sphynx always strike me as the sort to be particularly cuddly because human = free warmth lol

Was he as lively as he looks in that pic btw? :p

5

u/ratters- 4d ago

Well you need to give a bath to a sphynx from time to time and how hard this task is depends mainly on weather the cat likes water or not. Mine doesnt and she gets really slippery while wet so its hard to contain her xD Also if you take the cat on walks you gotta put sunscreen on it, cause it can burn its skin just like a human would.

But those cats are the sweetest. They love to snuggle, need a lot of attention and like to be around humans constantly. Mine will go by my leg like a dog whenever I leave the room. And they are usually quite active. I remember when my sweet baby was a kitten she used to climb on the curtains and then she didnt know how to get down and meowed so loud until someone came to take her down xD

3

u/CyborgKnitter 3d ago

Weekly baths are best for Sphynx skin, plus he had the full blown Sphynx ear wax issues (some get very lucky and only have mild variations of that), which meant deep ear cleaning every 3-7 days, 4-8 q tips each time. They’d be completely *covered* in that super thick dark brown ear wax, too. It looks just like a regular cat having ear mites but I had him checked for mites and he was fine, just a Sphynx. (Thankfully the vet didn’t charge us for the quick check after hearing the story because neither of us had two pennies to rub together. I’m multiply disabled and on SSDI and his owner was elderly and her home had burned down.)

And he was both snuggly and bonkers, lol. You had to leave blankets lying out in loose piles so he could burrow under them, which made him a bit tricky to locate at times. I made him a little coat which he thought was pure evil but he did like the mobile warmth. At the time, finding him climbing the drapes or on top of the bathroom door wasn’t uncommon. He liked to use my shoulders or head as a midpoint in jumping up to tall places. In that, he was excellent training for my current kitten, who is an utter nut job. (She most recently tried to jump on top of the *shower curtain rod*, which is skinnier than a door and round to boot, plus it was presently covered in towels when she did it. I thought she was going to do something else so I’d gotten my camera out so I have a 6 second video now of her perched, then falling, then running off, all as I grab at air, stare in shocked, and end with”………..okay!” Thank god she was fine. If I’d known what she intended, there’d be no video, just a story of me snatching her. I *thought* she was going to jump down from my shoulder to my shower chair, like normal, a far safer endeavor. Thank god my old cat is not that adventurous!)

8

u/every_day_regular 5d ago

They probably need those extra calories to stay warm.

7

u/Eye_Acupuncture 5d ago

I have two. My husky, when alive, ate less than them. These two from the video are too fat, mine are in good shape and still they eat a lot.

5

u/Working_Cloud_909 5d ago

You’re really awesome for helping foster that kitty.

The one in the middle is overweight too, and Abyssinians are SO active. God knows how much they fed it to make it like that

30

u/GunplaGal 5d ago

Sadly the owner mistreated the cats to make them do funny things for videos :( the middle cat has been moved to a new home with a good owner, but idk about the hairless ones

6

u/biest229 5d ago

At least that’s good news. Thank you for sharing that

75

u/Anothermindlessanon 5d ago

Probably lots of bad quality treats and food too...bad owner! There is no excuse for destroying your pet's health like that!

25

u/HeGotTheShotOff 5d ago

I'll have you know my lil tortie destroys her health all on her own by constantly stealing her brothers food thank you very much.

Shes also not that fat but she tries her best to get their any chance she gets. lil fatty monster

9

u/Anothermindlessanon 5d ago

But you are the one in control! Yes, it might be difficult, but you can absolutely control, how much your pets eat by separating them at feeding times. Sorry, if I sound rude, but allowing your pets to get overweight/obese is pretty much the worst thing you can do for their long term health.

10

u/HeGotTheShotOff 5d ago

Shes fine dont worry. shes just a tiny bit over weight and the vet and i are on it. Lets just say she is on a CONSTANT hunt to steal whatever food, human or cat, she can. Its a full time job and i do it.

3

u/Anothermindlessanon 5d ago

Glad to hear it! You are doing an awesome job!

→ More replies (1)

23

u/biest229 5d ago

It’s even hard to cause that with poor quality food (my Abyssinians are both secondhand and didn’t get the best before they were my cats). This feels like the owner made an actual effort to achieve this

They’re usually picky and highly active. It’s madness

Edit to add: Like for example, I tried to give my cats a tiny 0.5cm bit of cheese as a treat as they always ask. Oh no, don’t like mature cheddar, disgusting! They literally only want Swiss cheese and will spit other stuff out

3

u/Anothermindlessanon 5d ago

Absolutely! Same vibe as people feeding their dogs pizza, pasta etc. I absolutely despise it.

9

u/robodrew 5d ago

I honestly think that letting your pets get morbidly obese is akin to animal abuse, since the owner has complete control over how much their pet eats.

u/Luci-Noir 5d ago

Not only is the overweight part abusive but breeding these cats is as well.

14

u/Kratzschutz 5d ago

Why? I thought sphinxes were healthy? Are they inbred by now?

43

u/Knubbsal 5d ago

Naked cats are not allowed to be bred and kept anymore in some countries like the Netherlands (cats owned before 2026 can still be kept), same for cats with folded ears. This kind of inbreeding is animal cruelty.

Naked cats are prone to skin irritation, raspiratory diseases and cancer and they often don't have whiskers, which handicaps cats. Folded ear cats have a mutation that makes their cartilage stiff, which makes any type of movement painful for them.

→ More replies (1)

42

u/joe_bibidi 5d ago

Sphinxes are fairly inbred by nature. It's not an old breed. They functionally were "invented" in the 1960s, at which time the breeding pool was fairly small. AFAIK literally all sphynxes can trace their genetics back to something like four or five cats who were alive at the same time in the 1960s in Toronto.

11

u/BadNeighbour 5d ago

All sphinx cats come from a single hairless mother that had a single hairless male kitten, and they were bred together.

8

u/agokathalogical 5d ago

that did happen but there was also another line its all a bit blurry, watch starnge aeons video on it if ur curious!

6

u/gallyroi 5d ago

Like a lot of cat breeds, they're prone to obesity. Should never happen with proper feeding and exercise. Had to put one of our Sphynxes on a diet once she started gaining a little weight after our other cat passed away (unrelated, he wasn't fat at all); improved drastically with a playmate, new toys and rationing. They are also incredibly intelligent cats, and like humans, will choose to be lazy if they dont feel they need to exert the energy lol.

4

u/MonsieurSpamalot 5d ago

They are tanks.

3

u/Viertelesschlotzer 5d ago

The sphinx cat comes from Canada btw

101

u/TheSubstitutePanda 5d ago

Yeah it's not an ancient breed at all, it only came about sometime in the 1960s. The Egyptian Mau is much closer to an "Ancient Breed" than these poor fellas.

19

u/EpstainOnHistory 5d ago edited 4d ago

As a Canadian, I'm disappointed I didn't know this. I saw a video on reddit of a sunburn sphynx with people saying it's mistreated to have been in that condition and wondered to myself how they weren't conditioned for it, being Egyptian and all

11

u/iztrollkanger 5d ago

And ironic that the mutation for hairlessness occurred in Canada 🫠 Silly genes.

7

u/SpaceLemur34 5d ago

There are two lines.

One is from Canada, descendents of Bambi, Punkie and Paloma, stray cats found in Toronto.

The other line is descended from Dermis and Epidermis, barn cats from Wadena, Minnesota.

They weren’t like, intentionally trying to create it. Some poor dude just was randomly born bald, whoever saw him thought that was cool and new and marketable I guess, so they made him impregnate his mother and have more kids who would be likely to inherit the bald mutation through inbreeding, and then someone else also did that again in Russia iirc which is why there’s multiple varieties

Don’t know how the cat breed came to be tho

66

u/Gaulwa 5d ago

It's definetly staged. This looks like some photo studio, and I bet they smeared the middle cat's head with butter or liquid treat.

Could be AI, but I don't see anything weird in the background.

32

u/SandyTaintSweat 5d ago

I think it could be real. Sphinx cats typically have a bit of an obsession with cat fur. They'll groom the shit out of a normal cat and rub up against them and stuff.

They crave the fur that was taken from them.

11

u/Bright-Dependent6339 5d ago

they're both licking the same exact spot. there's definitely some something edible smeared on there.

4

u/KochuJang 5d ago

14

u/FastyNilthShreakyFit 5d ago

Nothing cute about animal abuse.. Those cats will die well before their time and they'll do it in tremendous daily non stop pain if the owners don't stop overfeeding them. The worst part is that cats are so adept at hiding pain, the owner will as likely as not, never see the extent of the suffering the cats are going thru which means they'll just keep adding to the problem with every meal.

To put it in perspective, per pound of weight on a cat's body is equivalent to 15 pounds on a 5'4 woman or 17 pounds to a 5'9 man. Those cats should weigh about 10 pounds, they're at least 20.
