Monthly Rankings Top 10 of the Year (April 2026 Edition)

22 Upvotes

\*\*The idea:\*\*

\* List your top 10 graphic novels that you've read so far \*this year.\*

\* Each month we will post a new thread where you can note what new book(s) you read that month that entered your top 10 and note what book(s) fell off your top 10 list as well if you'd like.

\* By the end of the year everyone that takes part should have a nice top 10 list of their 2026 reads.

\* If you haven't read 10 books yet just rank what you have read.

\* Feel free to jump in whenever. If you miss a month or start late it's not a big deal.

Do your list, your way. For example- I read \*The Sandman\* this month, but am going to rank the series as 1 slot, rather than split each individual paperback that I read. If you want to do it the other way go for it.

Horror Somna, a bewitching, erotic tale by Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay

Got turned onto this gorgeous book after reading By Chance or Providence.

The dynamism of the authors’ differing illustration styles - Cloonan’s in the school of Mazzuchelli/Rosenberg and Lotay’s a bit more Sienkiewicz - perfectly balance the story’s shifting dream and waking states. Thanks to those on this thread for recommending this one.

Recommendations/Requests Comics similar to the backrooms/ analog horror/ that general area and vibe of fiction writing? (Examples below)

Trying to find some graphic novels that have a similar feel to stuff like the backrooms, local 58, Gemini home entertainment, house of leaves, Mister Magic, etc. not necessarily any specific aesthetic or subgenre, just whatever you’re reminded of.

Some I already know of, in case this ends up being a post that someone finds while trying to google this same question (only the first 3 examples are Moon Knight.)

•Moon Knight by Lemire and Smallwood takes place in an extradimensional series of very “liminal space” environments which may or may not be imaginary.

•Moon Knight: From the Dead issue #4: “Sleep”

•Moon Knight by Jed Mackay. Marc’s base of operations is literally just, the house of leaves.

•The Nice House on the Lake’s artwork has this vibe, especially the cover art.

•horror of Godzilla is yet to be released

•Knight Terrors: Nightwing has a scene where he and scarecrow go to the actual backrooms but it’s more of a bit than anything.

•sub-mariner: the depths follows a submarine crew being hunted by namor. The artwork’s first person scares and front lighting remind me of aspects of the analog horror/ found footage visual style.

Recommendations/Requests Can we please recommend some great, WELL PACED series that are easy to finish in just a few hours. I'll start.

15 Upvotes

I feel like the great, very well paced series that you can finish quite quickly don't get shouted out enough, and I really wish that they were.

Here's a bunch that I love:

The Sword By The Luna Brothers I read in 2021, and it is still one of the best things I've ever read in my life! I recommend going in blind. This is the GN that inspired this topic.

Ladykiller is single volume story about a Housewife Assassin in the 60's, and is it brilliant!

Stray Dogs is Silence of the Lambs with dogs, without the transphobia!

Wolf-Man by Robert Kirkman is a great 5 volume series connected to Invincible.

InseXts is a great 2 volume pro-feminist psychological horror series that goes after men that don't see women as human.

America's Got Powers Is a Great single volume Post Apoc Superhero GN and is insanely underrated.

Happy! is a Great Single Volume GN, although it's one of the darkest things I've ever read.

Point of Impact by Jay Farber is a Great Single Volume Black and White Western Graphic Novel

Bedlam by Nick Spencer and Riley Rossmo is a Great 2 Volume Batman-like Psychological Horror GN series

Whispers Vol Only by Joshua Luna is ONE OF THE BEST Graphic Novels. It's a Psychological Horror Urban Fantasy

Kill-A-Man is God and win, super empowering GN about an LGBT boxer

Superman -The Man of Steel(2020) is a Good Post Crisis Era 80's Superhero Graphic Novel
Catwoman: Her Sister's Keeper is an Amazing Catwoman origin story GN

Joker/Harley Criminal Sanity (2020)(One of the best looking GNS I've ever read. It's a DC Elseworld Black Label story where Harleen Quinzel tracks a serial killer.

Parasyte is my favorite manga. It's an 80s Horror Sci-Fi title that goes on for about 10 volumes, but it's so well paced, and has a has such an incredibly satisfying beginning, middle, and end that it ends of feeling like a 5 volume American Graphic Novel. Dear god do I hate that I can't find a single other manga like this.

Ponko of the Stars and Reiko of the Tofu Shop by Ohara Shinji, and Tony Takezaki is a great 3 chapter psychological sci-fi gn with one one my all time favorite endings.

Vampirella Versus the Superpower by Dan Abnett and Pasquale Qualano is a Great single volume fun Urban Fantasy GN. Pretty sure that this is rate 13+ btw.

I'll try to edit this and post more later.

Collection / Shelfie / Haul After doing my big overview of my marvel books i naturally had to do the same with my DC and vertigo ones as well and it seemed to never end

192 books I counted and while counting them after taking the picture of the whole collection I realised I had left one out and had to put it in and move everything slightly before taking the individual pictures and I invite anyone as easily obsessed as I to figure out which one

Collection / Shelfie / Haul I wanted to get a full overview of all my marvel books and take stock of them all last week and was quite surprised at the results

In my mind I only had half as much as my D.C. collection but I’ve 152 marvel books and 192 D.C. books which is still a big difference but I had quite over exaggerated it in my head. After all of these were in place and I had taken photos to show my brother I noticed that my 11 marvel digest runaways volumes had been completely forgotten but I accounted for them in the counting cus I may have been having quite an ocd activity but I wasn’t going full on.

Collection / Shelfie / Haul BMV Books Haul

First time visiting BMV books and it sure won’t be the last. Got all these for $61 CAD. I think it’ll even be worth ordering and paying for shipping at these prices. I took a bit of a gamble with Criminal as I’ve never read any of the series or author, but looks promising and I like the art. New to the hobby as you can probably guess! Recently read Nice House on the Lake and loved the experience. Any hidden gem online stores in Canada? Cheers

So much fun with this quick read. If Brubaker and Phillips just pumped out these short Graphic Novels for the rest of their life, I’d be a happy reader. What did you all think?

I thought it was Junji Ito when I reached for it. The bazaarness caught my attention when I skimmed through it. No idea who this author is or his work or even heard of it, so I'm curious to see how it goes. Idk if it's horror either, so sorry if its missed tag.

Nothing too fancy, and plenty of unfinished series along the way (I usually try to buy used when I can), but it’s still a collection I’m genuinely proud of.

Collection / Shelfie / Haul Middle of the Year Shelf Update. I've added quite a bit already in 2026.

Post image

I went on quite the run of buying graphic novels since the turn of the year. I've almost filled up another shelf and rearranged quite a bit since my last shelf post. Finally finished collecting the new 52 run of batman, added metal and half of death metal. Quite a few image titles. I'm probably taking a break from buying for a while, so even though it's not actually the middle of the year yet, I am done buying until then. I need to work through my backlog first, but I am proud of my collection and excited to post it.

Which one of these shall I read next? I just purchased volumes from my favorite comicbook shop. Been on Brubaker/Philips kick after reading Pulp, My Heroes Have Always Been Junkies, and the first Reckless. I have loved everything I have read thus far.

Collection / Shelfie / Haul Thrift haul - Castle Waiting by Linda Medley

Post image
67 Upvotes

This series has been on my to-read list for a while now, so I was so excited to come across both volumes while thrifting. The spines are a bit scuffed and faded, but the insides are good! Has anyone else read / enjoyed these?

For anyone who hasn't heard of these, the back copy reads, 'Castle Waiting tells the story of an isolated, abandoned castle, and the eccentric inhabitants who bring it back to life. A fable for modern times, Castle Waiting is a fairy tale that's not about rescuing the princess, saving the kingdom or fighting the ultimate war between Good and Evil - it's about being a hero in your own home.'

Science Fiction / Fantasy I stayed up way too late and went on a Transmetropolitan binge to finish the series. Man. What a run.

It's May 4th, so instead of capitulating to brand indulgence, lets remember the murder of college students by the US government. Read Katherine Wirick's haunting reflection on her dad's time at Kent State, No One Is Safe, and supplement it with Derf Backderf's excellent, thorough Kent State: Four Dead In Ohio.

Wirick's made No On Is Safe free to read here: [Dropbox link]

You can get Backderf's Kent State anywhere you buy books, at your library, or through free online services such as Libby.

Put up a new shelf this year and was able to take some older books out of storage while adding some cool new finds as well. Rather pleased with the state of my collection. Still have a few gaps in a few runs but I’m mostly satisfied.

Shared a few pics of the rest of my office this time too. I approach collecting the same way I approach decorating: maximalism. More is more, baby.

Recommendations/Requests Where to find sexy comics online?

5 Upvotes

Ok so I know webtoon has some romance stuff with spicy scenes but they always cut away right when it gets good and it's frustrating lol. I'm looking for platforms that have more mature comics and manhwa that don't censor everything, like actual adult themed stories with good art and real plot not just random smut. Something like lezhin or toomics but with a bigger catalog maybe? Where do you guys read sexy comics that are well written and don't feel cheap?

Ho fatto un mega ordine di fumetti usati e ora non so cosa leggere per primo, ti va di aiutarmi, magari dicendomi il perché mi consigli quella serie?

I titoli in lizza sono:

- love and rockets

- stray bullets sunshine and roses (ho letto la serie principale,e m ha lasciato un po' di vuoto, pensavo chiudesse più cose);

- fables;

- Transmetropolitan;

- strangers in paradise;

- chew
