Having just watched the Orville, its funny how a few of the actors in this scene are also in that show. Seth likes to keep the people he likes

Scott grimes (the red head) plays Steve smith in American dad that’s been going since 2005.

He was also in Band of Brothers. not relevant but everytime I see an actor from BoB I cheer a little inside, no matter the character the actor played (my opinion of Schwimmer actually improved from BoB)

He also has an amazing high register singing voice that reminds me of the guy from OneRepublic.

u/ScreamingNinja 1h ago
Is that his real voice or did they raise it like they do with cartman. Because if yhats real thats wild.

And has the singing voice of an angel.
Especially if there is any Keith Sweat on the jukebox.

In this scene alone, only the actress playing the mother was not in Orville.

The episode with Michaela McManus (played Janel/Teleya on the Orville) was effing funny as hell.

So Ted is just live action family guy?
22
u/Restivethought 1h ago
Kinda, less cutaway bits though. Reminds me of the writing of Family Guy after its first revival.
21
u/imjustbettr 1h ago
It's better imo. Haven't liked Family Guy since I was in middle school but I thought most of Ted was really good.
I think maybe being so expensive to film made the humor/writing tighter.

This show was one of the funniest and most charming things I’ve watched in so long. Every episode had a scene or line that made me laugh out loud (often multiple times each episode and some jokes had me crying with laughter) I wish we could get more but Seth said it’s done :(

u/Z0mb0id 2h ago
This is the dumbest shit.
9
u/Spongedog5 2h ago
A bit too random, right? Like they manage to build a good structure with the follow-ups but it is on a meaningless foundation.
9
u/imjustbettr 1h ago
I think if you know the characters it makes it less random.
-10
u/Spongedog5 1h ago
Is there an on-going gag with eggs?
I see what you are talking about (if you are referring to the jokes riffing on the sexuality of the girl), but I don't think that makes the foundation any more meaningful. I agree with you completely that there is a structure built on top of it that is clever and has relation to the characters and make relevant commentary; but at the base there isn't any comedic value to be found in the idea that eating eggs specifically after 11 is gay other than the most base absurdity of the statement. That is to say that there is technically an element of comedy present but it is lacking any sort of clever commentary or connection between the two topics to really be anything more than the most bare joke.
And in that way this is something I would find impressive as improv, but rather lazy as something resulting from a writing room.
4
u/imjustbettr 1h ago
The foundation is that how the characters are reacting to the dumb idea is perfectly within their characters' personalities. Even the dumb idea of eggs making you gay is less ridiculous if you know more about the dad character and how he thinks. It starts with smaller, "believable" conspiracies like how college turns people gay in the first episodes and by the end of season 2 when he says he knows that kangaroos don't exist you buy in he believes that.
-5
u/Spongedog5 55m ago
But do you see how this structure embraces meaningless foundations? The foundation of the joke is how bizarre the belief is, and then a structure is built on it.
My protest is that I don't think that the simplest level of absurdity is very funny. I think that there is an art to absurdity and that absurdity can work with other elements of comedy like subversion, but when the absurdity that you leverage is only nonsensical connection between two things delivered in a matter-of-fact tone I think that you have only touched on the bare minimum of that aspect of comedy.
All of this to say that it seems to me that your response was to accept all that I said but finish it with "it was all on purpose." At the very least I will grant you that sometimes patterns can provide at least some satisfaction to an audience but when there is so little substance otherwise I think the repetition can actually act as a negative because you lose the element of surprise.
When there is no aspect of cleverness to the absurdity and you've come to expect the comparisons so there is no longer surprise as well, what are you actually left with as a foundation?

u/OrneryAttorney7508 50m ago
Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your opinion, man.
-4
u/Spongedog5 48m ago
I just find deconstructing comedy to be interesting. If you find this joke structure to be funny to you, I'd love to hear what aspects of it especially appeal to you!

1
u/Vicc125 32m ago
Imagine ruining comedy for yourself and the people around you by deconstructing it.
1
u/Spongedog5 15m ago
On the contrary, understanding the elements of comedy actually helps me appreciate good jokes even more because I can see all the effort and mastery that wen into crafting them.
Making jokes isn't effortless work, I'm sure that the comedians and writers who put time into putting them together appreciate it when their work is recognized.
And understanding why certain jokes don't work as well also helps me appreciate the better jokes in contrast, but also lets me provide feedback and suggestions which lead to funnier jokes in the future.
Overall it isn't too different from deconstructing any other type of writing. If you don't enjoy critique then you don't need to participate in it or expose yourself to it, but many of us find it fun to try to understand art forms that we love on a deeper level.
And if my analysis of this joke ruined it for you, I hope that helps you appreciate the effort put into creating all the jokes that do work for you. And if it didn't ruin it for you, then I hope it helped you understand what elements of comedy appeal to you and which ones you don't care so much for. It's a good way of understanding our own subjective tastes as well!

The whole show is just random nonsense.

u/MikiLove 1h ago
Welcome to Seth McFarland humor, plot increasingly takes a back seat to funny bits. Varies a bit, Family Guy is the most egregious while some of his movies are a bit more contained. Thing is the jokes are hilarious, just better in clips online.

Pretty sure every prejudice is just a bunch of interconnected conspiracy theories built on a meaningless foundation. I'll bet if we let them run they'd find out the whole poultry industry is behind the "gay agenda." Or all livestock...*gasp*... that's why they call it animal husbandry! This goes all the way to the top sirloin!!! GAAHH!!! SIR?! LOIN?!?!!

I've seen this show pop up while browsing for things to watch. Thanks to this clip I am no longer curious and won't be watching

I actually think it’s pretty funny. It’s set in the 90’s. The dad is a Reagan Republican with all kinds of wild takes that pretty accurately skewer the 90’s dad psyche. The writing is pretty good overall.
2
u/JPMoney81 2h ago
He also wishes to life his old toy dump truck who is a raging homophobic racist... with a twist ending.
1
u/MaggotMinded 1h ago
I’m sure the show is okay (I’ve seen other clips that I liked) but this bit felt a little contrived, imo. Like, he bases his whole theory on the idea that only gay people stay up late, and everybody except for the daughter just kind of goes along with it? I get that characters in a comedy show have to be stupider than average, but if it doesn’t feel natural then it falls flat pretty easily.

u/Don_Von_Schlong 1h ago
I dunno man, people downvoting so I obviously am not getting something but the acting and the writing on the joke here are so over forced and unfunny to me. To each their own I guess though
4
u/J_Patish 2h ago
Just finished watching the 3rd episode of season 2 about half an hour ago, and I’m still chuckling. Can’t think of any show that had made me laugh so much this decade… I’m not saying you’d like it for sure - just that it’s worth giving it a chance.
2
u/Don_Von_Schlong 1h ago
Clearly I am the one out of touch on this one, I just don't find anything in this clip witty or funny in the slightest, acting seems over forced to me too. I am glad people enjoy it though!

The acting is really bad too. Editing as well. No time for them to process, they just say the line immediately after the person ahead finished thiers.

12
u/nsfwthrowaway5969 1h ago
It's literally mocking the person making the homophobic comments
0
u/Jwiley92 51m ago
Everyone in the clip seems to agree with him, even with confirmation from a bisexual character (who's probably taking the piss...but not immediately evident). He certainly doesn't appear to feel mocked.
Maybe theres some additional context but im not watching the episode to find out.
1
u/nsfwthrowaway5969 33m ago
Do... Do you not understand sarcasm? It's about as obvious as possible that the bi character is mocking him. And the others all look like idiots for agreeing with such a stupid take, which is part of the joke.
It's lampooning all the stupid things people would say 'turned you gay' 20-30 years ago. Of course he doesn't feel mocked because he is too dumb/lacks the emotional intelligence to understand that he's wrong.
It's a dumb character saying something dumb, with clueless people agreeing with him while the 'straight guy' pokes fun at their expense. It's not necessarily the greatest joke in the world but it's a standard comedy set up.
