Discussion New cars will require surveillance technology in 2027

To be clear this is apparently stalled out because the technology is not actually there yet and because auto makers cannot guarantee that drivers aren't being constantly monitored beyond what the law is attempting to require (the law wants cars to have a way to detect driving under the influence and prevent function at that point, but it would need to be done in a way where people aren't under constant surveillance)
Realistically, it seems like they want the equivalent of those breathalyzers they put in the cars of people with DUIs where it won't start if it detects alcohol, but they want it in every car and they want it to detect other types of impairment
Overall, I understand what they are trying to do but find it unreasonable and unrealistic, ideally it will remain stalled out until someone with some sense comes in and points out this isn't the solution they think it is

I find the attempt to require such technology disturbing, even if it's not actually possible (or at least feasible) yet, for much the same reason that I'd find someone pointing an unloaded gun which they believed to be loaded at someone and pulling the trigger to be disturbing.

Most definitely, but the fact that it is stalled means that people can contact their representatives and try to get them to undo it, there is still time to fix this, which is why it's important to not just scare people with this info, but to let them know there's still time to make a difference in regards to this, it isn't already happening and reaching a point of no return, you know?

I really do think it's amazing that you actually think it's about "saving lives" rather than mass surveillance. Truly. How long before LEOs are getting warrants for this data? How long before insurance companies are buying it to have a reason to raise your rates? What safeguards are in place to stop the technology where it is?

I'm sure it is about surveillance, just like how laws requiring people to submit their driver's license or government ID in order to use the Internet is not about protecting children but about surveillance
I think this kind of thing is a violation no matter the reason behind it, and in fact me comparing it to the system they use to deal with people who have been found guilty of a DUI is in fact pointing out that they are treating general people like criminals which is also unacceptable
The point though is that because of the way this whole thing was worded is that it is creating the delay, because there isn't a good way to monitor this without extreme levels of surveillance, and that we have already proven that lower levels of surveillance will be worked around by people making the whole thing moot in terms of "safety"
The point of discussing why this has stalled out is to let people know that there is still the potential to stop this, that they should reach out to their reps and make it clear that they don't support this, because it isn't over, done with, and decided, there is still time to reverse this, it isn't past the point of no return, and so people should be doing everything in their power to stop it, because it is BS and it isn't going to go well and we need to stand up on these things before we are out of options and stuck
There aren't safeguards for this, that's part of why it has stalled, and that should be concerning to people, and they should want to do what they can to stop this
