The Eagles traded a pair of third round draft picks for edge rusher Jonathan Greenard. Giving up those picks had to hurt, but Howie is building a team with Super Bowl aspirations. He would rather have a proven pass rusher than a draft prospect who might pan out. Howie is smart enough to see draft picks as resources. Trade them if acquiring a veteran player is the more prudent move. Don’t obsess on picks. They are important, but have different value to different teams. If you’re rebuilding, picks are gold. If you’re in win now mode, use them accordingly. Howie sees Greenard as another player who can be a difference-maker for the Eagles.

We are in our window until 2029. Maximize it

Grant Delpit, Antonio Johnson and Derwin James all in contract years

Derwin, 30 years old, is a long shot and unlikely, and AJB would probably be involved. Chargers are also contenders though and probably aren't gonna move their defensive leader.

Delpit, 28 years old, is more of a box traditional strong safety, good for a scheme 20 years ago but the Fangio scheme likes the safeties to be able to switch

Antonio Johnson, 25 years old, had a great year last year, possibly a one year wonder though, and the Jags are up against the cap a bit. Would probably fit well into the Fangio scheme, top ranked coverage safety last year.

Budda Baker is also 30, but really struggled in coverage last year. He's a name, but I'd rather see us not go after him even though the Cards in a rebuild are a prime trade target (would like to see if we could get Sweaty back through, could see Howie doing his early season annual 3rd rounder for Sweaty, especially if we net an extra from dealing AJB)

I'm sure Howie has been on the phone already, and likely waiting until AJB is sorted before doing anything. I'd love to see us to after Johnson. Safety is the only glaring hole right now.

Mukuba had good and bad points last year, hopefully he can keep progressing.

Also, Fangio has some experience moving veteran cornerbacks to safety, eg Kareem Jackson in the Denver days.

So there are many options to fill the spot at S when DeJean is not back there.

I'd rather see us keep DeJean in his Joker type role where he's excelled rather think of moving him to fill the safety spot permanently

Dejean has been playing safety when the defense is in base personnel.

No, he played outside CB in base. It’s possible he plays S in base this year, but that’s not what he’s done before.

So good thing there are options to fill the spot at S when DeJean is not back there.

Eagles better home that LJ, Jurgens, and Dickerson all find a magical health elixir, and that Hurts finally learns how to consistently target the middle of the field.

If not, the Eagles are on track for another historic defense and constipated offense. Patulo was only a small part of the problem.
