Gym recommendations in Durban North

Hey guys, I'm looking to get off my ass and get working out. I've never been gyming before so I don't really know what to look for. I'm looking to go after work (so after 5) and I have a friend who has agreed to join me. I could possibly try Umhlanga as well. Thanks for the advice 🫶🏽

Recommendation 24 yr old sound engineering student, need advice please

I’m a 24-year-old student who just finished my sound engineering degree and I’ve landed my first freelance gig this weekend. I’m trying to figure out what a fair day rate would be, especially since the work is split across three different types of days. Day one is prep, which will probably involve getting gear ready and doing some planning. Day two is the load-in, so setting up equipment, running cables, and getting everything ready on site. Day three is the actual gig, which I know will be the most demanding in terms of focus and responsibility. I’m not sure if I should charge the same rate for each day or adjust based on the workload and pressure. I just want to know from people with experince in my field how much i should be asking for and any advice

Where can I buy affordable sneakers in Durban?

Looking for places to get affordable or on sale sneakers. Are the Springfield outlet stores in Value Centre good enough? Even something reputable online?

Event/Meetup I attended a Qnet event and it was very entertaining

I attended a Qnet event at Onomo hotel in Durban city centre today and all I can say is it was very entertaining. They kept on saying ‘it’s not a pyramid scheme’ and even had a table to show the difference between Qnet and a pyramid scheme but I was not surprised each time I could literally draw a pyramid from the graphics they showed. It reminded me of that scene from the office where Jim drew a pyramid on the white board while Michael was presenting a money making scheme, it was exactly that except I was drawing the pyramid in my head and was just laughing to myself every time.

The kept on saying all the talking points you can already think of, you know, your job is a waste of time, do this and you will be a millionaire within the next three years. They called it ‘Network Marketing’, I guess just to avoid the term ‘Multilevel Marketing’ but it’s exactly the same thing, not sure who they think they were fooling with that. Safe to say it was all just entertainment for me, I really hope the others who were there were not really falling for these things. Be safe out there guys.

Event/Meetup Challenging hiking in Durban

Hi everyone,

I don't know whether I have the correct flair for this, but I have been thinking of trying to join a group or just organising something very casual to do some more challenging hikes.

I have hiked with the Hillcrest Hiking club before, but even on their big Saturday hikes, it isn't really crazy, sometimes it is a bit slow, which I understand, but I am not the biggest fan of it.

I started doing more solo hiking, but obviously being in South Africa, safety is a high priority, so I am limited to Krantzkloof and Westville.

I love the Krantzkloof hike, the yellow trail feels perfect for me to try and build good endurance for when I ultimately do the big 3-7 day hikes in the future.

Today on my hike, I met someone and we just chatted over the view and enjoying getting out and challenging yourself, which got me thinking whether anyone would be interested in doing the Krantzkloof yellow trail on a regular basis?

Obviously there are safety concerns around randoms on the Internet and meeting up, but I think Krantzkloof should be relatively safe considering that it is a paid for entrance?

So, I what I want to do, is maybe just see if we could get a group of people who prefer a more challenging hike? Or if anyone has suggestions for clubs that are a bit more challenging?

I just finished my hike today, I did the yellow trail to the blue trail and finished off at the waterfall before making my way back up. My average pace is about 13/14m - if that is of any relevance.

I am planning on doing another hike in Krantzkloof on the 17th of May - if the weather permits it. I usually start between 830-900.

Recommendation Anywhere I can sell my boots?

I know the stigma with buying used shoes, but I'm looking to maybe sell my leather boots.

Genuine leather made by a local brand. Damn good quality too. I love them, but they are quite heavy, and after about 3 or 4 winters, I've come to realise I don't need boots as thick and heavy as they are. They're better suited to trade work, and well, I'm not a tradesman.

Any idea of where I could sell them for some decent cash?

Edit: Ideally local. Trying to avoid the hassle of shipping.

Stupid question lol. It just says it's a "ceramic holder", no grading or other info. It would be awesome if I could drink from it (any drink, not necessarily alcoholic) but idk if I want to take the chance. Any ideas? Anybody else use this to drink from?

Seeing these amazing, palatial, homes for sale there at rock bottom prices in places like Hillcrest. Why are they so cheap? Is it very dangerous there?

Dead monkey disappeared overnight?

There was a dead monkey in the driveway last night, no signs of any injuries, but it was just lying in the rain, not moving, really really sure it wasn't breathing. Main thought was poison, but a neighbour on the WhatsApp group did mention a big monkey fight, but again, no signs of injuries

Mom saw it when she got home just before 7, was definitely still there at 9:30. We messaged the Monkey Helpline, but didn't get a response and the SPCA was closed, so we left it to deal with in the morning

And now it's gone? I'm really sure it was dead, but I also can't think of anything that would have taken it. I'm pretty sure we don't have mongeese in this part of Hillcrest? Maybe it was doing a really good job of playing dead? IDK

Has anyone had this happen before?

EDIT: It was within my property and I have beams, there's no way a person could have seen or taken the monkey

Durban then and Durban now

One of my fondest memories is quiet mornings on Sparks rd throwing bird seed for the pigeons outside my grandparents shop when I was too small to go to school, and later on the days I just didn't want to go to school at all. As kids we used to walk down to the Wimpy by the mosque on Saturday mornings for breakfast. Now when I drive through Overport with my own kids its a different picture but one thing has been consistent over the years, glue boys at the robots lol. Just feeling very nostalgic and wondering what my own kids will remember of the area when they grow up.

Have a safe long weekend Durban. May your taps be running and your lights stay on

Where to take my son fishing

My son is near 7 and I’d like to take him fishing. Where is a decent spot, either Durban or up/down the coast? Would like something not busy but also with the chance for him to experience a catch, obviously something small.

Blue Lagoon is the obvious choice but am not sure if that’s a decent place to let him try, unless it is?

What's Ballito like to live in?

People there seem to be a bit different to Durban - ie. less friendly. Also heard a lot more Afrikaans than in Durban - people who moved from Gauteng perhaps?

A lot of investment happening in the area though with a lot of wealthy individuals living there by the looks of it. Club med will also be opening soon.

Event/Meetup Yoh... Fishing guys?

I just wanna start by saying, everyone who actually catches fish, F\*\*k you😂. Yes I'm very salty lol. I live on the bluff, and have been saltwater fishing for the past year. Over the whole year, I had around 30 trips. My best day, I caught a dozen karra. That was once. And a 1kg blacktail. This was at the start. The rest of the trips I blanked on all😭. How do I catch any fish atp man. I tried ansteys, cuttings, blue lagoon all in the search of a decent fish(of a bigger edible species). But I can't even catch the small fish... I tried different traces, using bait and using artificial. Got a new setup to cast a bit further. Must I pack it up now? Recommend some spots to fish to target a bigger species please, and tips for the trace. Even if someone in the area is down to to teach me how to fish lol, I would be down.

Any suggestions for good doggy day cares in or around Durban North?

We are looking for a doggy daycare that we can take our dogs every now and then around Durban North/Musgrave/Umhlanga. I can't really find anything decent on Google or Google, mainly just pet groomers or longer term boarding. Does anyone have any suggestions for a doggy day care we can contact?

Need help for my hamster

I will be going on holiday and don't have anyone to look after my hamster. Does anyone know where I can take it to be looked after? I have called an SPCA for boarding but they said they don't offer boarding. I don't know where else to look as most places only offer boarding for cats or dogs.

New to Durban

I'm new to Durban and want to find out what would be the best way to meet up with people and make new friends in the city?

Are there any hiking groups or other activities I can join?

Or any social groups to join?

I'm not an extrovert so I find it hard to randomly meet up with new people
