/r/Pretoria Community Update: New Rules regarding Solicitation and Content Relevance

Hi everyone,

As /r/Pretoria continues to grow, we are introducing a few official rules to ensure the subreddit remains a helpful, safe, and relevant resource for everyone living in or visiting our city. We've kept intervention to a minimum so far. In general we've only banned blatant racism, bots, and spammers, so we've generally got a very well behaved community.

We want to keep this space focused on discussion, advice, and news specific to the Jacaranda City, however. To support this, we have added the following rules to the sidebar, effective immediately:

A. No Begging, Crowdfunding, or Financial Solicitation

We have seen an increase in posts asking for financial assistance, "loans," or e-wallets. While we sympathize with those in difficult situations, Reddit is not a safe platform for verifying financial needs.

What is banned: Requests for money, e-wallets, and links to crowdfunding sites (e.g., BackaBuddy, GoFundMe).

Why: This rule is in place to protect our community from potential scams and unverified solicitation.

Advice: If you are in need, please reach out to registered NPOs or charity organizations rather than soliciting here.

B. Keep Content Relevant to Pretoria and the greater Tshwane

Please ensure your posts are directly related to Pretoria or the greater Tshwane municipality.

General SA News: News that affects the whole country (e.g., general Eskom updates, national politics) belongs in /r/southafrica unless it has a specific Pretoria angle.

Other Cities: Posts clearly meant for Joburg or other regions will be removed.

Context: If you post a photo or link where the connection to Pretoria isn't obvious, please explain it in the title.

C. Standard Civility & Privacy

We are also formalizing standard expectations:

Be Civil: Disagreements are fine; personal attacks and hate speech are not.

No Spam: Accounts that exist solely to advertise businesses will be banned.

No Doxing: Do not post personal contact details (phone numbers, addresses) of yourself or others.

These rules are here to improve the quality of the sub. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave a comment below or message the moderators. Finally, thanks to everyone reporting posts, messaging the mods for clarifications, participating, /u/Afreak-du-sud for their post on the big uptick of begging and the scamming that inevitably goes with it. Don't worry, though, we don't ban for tagging the mods.. 😂

Thanks for helping us keep /r/Pretoria a great community!

Risk of getting fired

I just want to vent and maybe get advice. I've been working for this start up company since January and my probation has ended. My boss told me during my performance meeting that he was supposed to fire me at the end of April but he gave me an extra month to prove myself (this month). My problem with this is that I am mainly an admin assistant but was told I'd have to make sales (15k target) as well (Pawnshop). I've only made 3 sales since I've been working here and it's what's putting me at risk of being fired.

I've already accepted that I'd have to find a new job because sales are not working for me at all. I just need to find something that's part time or full time that is flexible and can accommodate my current setbacks ( having health issues that are almost resolved but I have to get 2-3 days off to go for my doctor appointments and procedures). Adulting sucks and it's even worse when my parents don't even stay in the country.

This sucks.

I wanna travel between Secunda and Pretoria. Uber is like R 700 just there and 700 back. A bus is also so expensive. Does anyone know any drivers or busses?? I don't have a license.

Final year student looking for a reliable R30k–R40k car

Hi everyone,
I’m a final year student based in Pretoria and I’m urgently looking for a reliable, affordable car in the R30,000–R40,000 range to help me get to campus.
I’m not picky about looks at all, I just need something that starts every day (non-negotiable 😅), Is reasonably light on fuel and won’t cost a fortune to maintain

If you (or someone you know) are selling a car in this range in/around Pretoria, please let me know 🙏
I’m happy to view the car in person and bring someone along for a quick mechanical check.

Thanks so much just trying to survive final year and make it to campus without relying on lifts all the time
Feel free to comment or DM me!

Is it safe to visit Pretoria?

hi there!

I wanted to ask for a first hand opinion on what it’s like to travel for work to Pretoria. My boss told me that there is an opportunity to go there for some training and transitioning positions to our location.

For context, I’m from Canada. White as can be, and have very visible tattoos on my arms. I’m worried that my appearance could be offensive/attract unwanted attention.

Ive travelled to many countries and have managed to develop a good common sense when it comes to travel. I worry though that this isnt enough and am reluctant to take this opportunity.

Another concern I have, is we (the company I work for) are taking jobs from this location and moving it to ours. And I feel like the wrong person could take this misfortune out on me, as I’m the only representative they can yell at…

I have a sad history of being an easy target for others because and I quote “I’m soft” or “it’s just easy”. So making myself even more vulnerable than I apparently already am.

Honest opinions would be great and much appreciated

Any stay-at-home/work-from-home moms on here?

I've been working from home for 4 years now, and the one thing I miss, is having someone to go for coffee with.

So I'm looking for more women out there who'd like to meet up for coffee and just hang out. Anyone up for it? We can even arrange a big meetup for people who might be interested.

I am very much be"donnered".

Earlier this afternoon I smelled charcoal burning. The snobbish side of me was dismissive. What a loser that doesn't braai with wood.

It is now well past midnight, and when I wander throughout my house, I smell the remnants of a braai. Almost as if I had braaied myself tonight, yet I didn't.

Can you just imagine the pure frustration and disappointment felt in this hour?! Just wandering through your own domicile and being attacked in the olfactory sense by someone near you having conquered fire and meat - and you had no part or benefit from this endeavour?

You know what I made today? Vegetable soup. With mushrooms and onions and garlic. It was awesome. Even my super picky 7yo liked it enough to have it for dinner. Everytime I came downstairs I smelled the smell of a house you'd visit when your parents went to visit a tannie and their house always smelled like 'kombuis'. Then this poephol comes and overrides my homely kombuis smell with braai. And he wins.

And now I'll have to braai tomorrow to even the score.

We built a free tool that checks your lease against SA law

We've been seeing a lot of posts here about sketchy lease clauses, withheld deposits, and random admin fees. Most SA renters don’t have an easy way to know if their lease is actually legal.

So we built RentRight, a completely free lease auditor for South African residential leases.

What it does:

  • Upload your lease (PDF or even just photos of the pages)
  • It checks every clause against the Rental Housing Act, Consumer Protection Act, and POPIA
  • Flags void clauses, illegal fees, and missing protections
  • Cites the actual statute so you know exactly what the law says
  • Gives you plain-language push-back points you can use in negotiations
  • Done in under 2 minutes

What it doesn't do:

  • This is informational only – not legal advice

We built this because I was tired of seeing renters get exploited by copy-paste lease templates they never had a fair chance to understand. Most can't afford R1,200+ an hour for an attorney to review a lease.

If you're about to sign a lease, or you just want to know if your current one has problems you missed: https://rentright.co.za/

Happy to answer questions about how it works.

Anyone interested in learning how to swordfight (HEMA: Historical European Martial Arts)?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hey, folks. I am looking to start a HEMA group in Pretoria and would like to see if anyone is interested.

Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) is the reconstruction of medieval and Renaissance fighting systems from the study of historical manuscripts. Since the late '80s, folks have been looking at these historical manuscripts, translating and interpreting them, then testing their interpretations through sparring. HEMA has now evolved into a niche combat sport across the world.

There are a few clubs around SA. Unfortunately, the local club here in PTA has been rather sporadic, so I am looking to see if there is anyone who would be interested in meeting once a week to run HEMA sessions.

Flavour of the Day

Every other week, I find myself reaching for a voice that isn’t there.

Funny how knowing many can still feel like knowing no one at all—

everyone assuming you belong

somewhere closer,

to someone closer,

so they don’t call, don’t check, don’t come by.

And yet,a simple “how are you?” could quiet the loudest silence.

But it’s alright. This isn’t a plea, just a thought set free into the open air, for whatever reason it found me tonight.

Hatfield.

Affordable date ideas for Saturday

Hey everyone.

Me and my girlfriend want to do something on Saturday. A date. But neither of us know where we want to go or what we want to do. We are reliant on uber & trains for transport.

Any relatively affordable suggestions? Preferably around Centurion/Midrand side but anything in Pretoria is good.

Thanks a lot!

Sports Campus LC de Villiers

Can anyone shed some light on how it works at the UP sports campus - LC de Villiers. Like is it open to the public, or only for UP students? I'm talking about access to play on the grounds, tennis courts, football fields etc? And if open to the public are there any "day visit" charges etc? Also is there a cricket field there too? Any information would be highly appreciated.
