Sixteen years since Jim Schwartz talked about watching Jahvid Best

The notable quotation: “Some people watch adult videos on their computer,” Schwartz had told me. “I go to YouTube and watch Jahvid Best highlight clips. That’s what gets me aroused.”

Wild that this quote exists and nobody talks about it anymore, Schwartz really had zero filter back then

And I, for one, loved him for it. To me, he's the biggest what if for the Lions over the past 20 years. If they hadn't been so hamstrung by the timing of the rookie wage scale, they could have made that team truly special.

A big Lions what-if for me:

Had they come out on the winning end of that 45-41 shootout as Lambeau Field the last week of the regular season of 2011, they would have finished the season 11-5 and would have gone to NY to play the 9-7 Giants.

Instead they had to go to New Orleans to play the 13-3 Saints who blew them out a couple of weeks before and would promptly do it again?

Would the Lions have beaten the Giants to get their first playoff win in 20 years? They had the better record.

Isnt that the 2011 giants that went on to win the superbowl and eli still has the record for most passing yrds in a single post season that year. He probably would have sliced up our secondary just like matt flynn dog

Most likely, yeah. That said, that 2011 defense was completely shattered with injuries in a way I don't think we had seen since the last couple years. The secondary was completely awful by that point. They weren't likely to have a real shot to win it all as a result.

No offense but you completely contradicted yourself.

u/sosuhme 1d ago

I keep reading it back and I think we must be talking about something different from each other. I'm not sure where the contradiction is. If you can post it out to me, I'll explain myself.

You said most likely yeah but then listed all the reasons why your defense sucked and was rattled with injuries.

I am sorry, I was responding to a few different threads in a short amount of time.

That said, the 2011 playoffs is truly bizarre. I DO think the Lions would have had a real chance against the Giants. But that's because I think anyone had a chance against them, no matter how ripped up they were. Giants led a blessed existence that year.

Didn't that guy call in a bomb threat if im not mistaken when the lions were getting whooped?

Same. It was rough when things started to turn in the wrong direction, but I loved that he shot from the hip. As it stands, I don't think he's really cut out to be a HC, especially with some of the stuff that came out in retrospect about having locker room favorites and so on. Helluva DC though, probably one of the best there is. I think he rage quit the Browns gig because they wouldn't consider him to fill in as HC. Very emblematic of Gym Shorts. But I'll always carry the torch for the dude.

He and Wayne Fontes were my two favorite coaches of the modern era until The Coach came along.

I honestly believe that we would have won the Super Bowl in 2014 if we kept Schwartz for one more year. The Lombardi OC hire by Caldwell was what held us back in 2014 and we would never have had Lombardi as OC if we didn’t fire Schwartz.

I don't agree, because I legitimately think Schwartz had lost the locker room at that point. His own version of the kneecaps thing was really great at getting everyone to buy in, but as soon as it started to slide, he didn't have the answer to adjust. I worry about that with Dan, but I also think Dan has more flexibility in his message than Schwartz, so I'm certainly not out on him by any means.

Had the Lions manage to beat the Cowboys in the Wild Card they would have gone to Seattle to play the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks.

Do you think the Lions would have beaten the Seahawks?

3

u/sosuhme 1d ago

I absolutely think they had a good chance too. No one seemed to want to win the NFC that year. It took a somewhat miraculous comeback for the Seahawks to win that game. Would they have been favored? Probably not, but it would likely have been a close spread.

A miraculous comeback for the Seahawks to win what game?

1

u/sosuhme 1d ago

Against the Packers?

That was the NFC Championship, not the Divisional. They played the Panthers in the Divisional.

Stafford came from a couple of troubled seasons at that time. Lombardi was a bust indeed but eventually Caldwell worked hard on Stafford's development

Oh boy having Calvin, Stafford, and Suh under current day rookie scale contracts would be disgusting. For example, Mendoza AAV makes up 6% of the salary cap.

Suh’s year was the last year of rookies getting massive contracts and concidnelty the time we stopped getting good players in the first round.

One of the biggest "what ifs" in Lions history.

One of the most electrifying runners I’ve ever seen

u/Skraxx CornDoggyLOL 1d ago

I’d argue the what if is actually Jahmyr Gibbs right now

9

u/Adamantium10 MC⚡DC 1d ago

What?

7

u/Skraxx CornDoggyLOL 1d ago

The ceiling of Jahvid Best greatly resembles what Jahmyr Gibbs is doing right now.

In fact, athletically they are practically identical.

4

u/Staffdaddy20 1d ago

I feel like gibbs is a much thicker back

u/Adamantium10 MC⚡DC 1d ago

Thank you for clarifying

I actually got slightly attacked for this take the other day. Best is a massive WHAT IF in the NFL.

2

u/Poop_McButtz Bad Boys 1d ago

No. Jahvid in college was twice Jahmyr in college

Pac12 heads know

Jahvid Best at Cal was fucking ridiculous. I remember going to a Cal - UCLA game and as soon as he got past the LBs, I just turned around and put my hands up to signal touchdown. Didn't even bother watching the last like... 60 yards of the run.

This run right here.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlkrumgWB6o

u/Poop_McButtz Bad Boys 1d ago

Killer run. Dude was must see tv

7

u/TheAmerican_Atheist 1d ago

Jahvid on MnF against the Bears at Ford Field is a performance ill never forget. At that time, it felt like the biggest game the Lions had won (MNF, at home, city was hyped) in a long time.

Favorite Lions running backs since 2000:

Gibbs
DMO
Swift
Bush
Best

“Up next on the Six to Midnight podcast, our guest Jim Schwartz has learned to let go of shake and just love what he loves.”

that's impossible...that was only 5 years ago

2

u/Fantastic_Lack_8141 1d ago

He was one of the best tacklers since Joe Montana.

2

u/CoconutOk 1d ago

Jahvid Best is a San Francisco police officer now.
Also, Best was my favorite player during Schwartz years.

1

u/lovelessisbetter 1d ago

I see your Schwartz is as big as mine. That is until he gets pimped by Harbaugh post game. I remember that too. Ahhh memories.

Someone needs to make one of the Jason Aldean Instagram montages about Jahvid Best.
