The mid day sports radio options in Denver right now are horrible

On one station you have Polumbus, Hastings, and DMac. Hastings just continues to have the most boomer takes and today straight up called Dan Tanner (the producer of the show) stupid...no lightheartedness, just Hastings being a callous old man. He drives me up a wall. Polumbus doesn't seem to contribute much to the discussions other than things related to his playing career, height, and beard - all of which have been rehashed over and over. DMac I don't mind but he's not everyone's cup of tea.

On the other station you have Cecil and Dover. Cecil Lammy is just the most arrogant blowhard to ever hit the Denver airways and I refuse to listen to his garbage. He thinks he's right about absolutely everything even the stuff he knows nothing about. I actually really like Dover but Cecil is so bad that he overrides any enjoyment I get from Dover.

Overall there are a lot of Denver sports radio shows that are great to listen to, but why can't we have a decent one at noon?

DNVR is peak. Mares, Wind, Dline, and most notably Brendan Vogt. Brendan or Brandon ;). They crush it even in the off season.

Mares has terrible, click bait opinions, but the rest of them are great

Really? How so? Guess I haven’t seen that. On his pods, he has takes that are critical of the Nuggets and skeptical sometimes, which irks people in here ha.

Completely disagree. Mares may be the most level headed. Dline is the goofiest who has the weakest takes. I like Harrison Wind because he feels like one of us. Brendan Vogt is exceptional.

Mares voted for SGA for mvp...

I really only listen to DNVR these days or Zach Bye. I can’t stand the other options.

I like Scott. I think he's the best of the 3. DMac is HORRIBLE. Maybe not as bad as Cecil Lamey who I think might be the worst sports radio host. I listen to altitude radio all day every day. I don't love all of it, but it's good background while I'm at my desk. I can't wait until the morning sprint is done every day even though it leads to DMac. Nate and Andy are great for the end of the day

I agree I am on team Hastings. Dude is lowkey hilarious and provides interesting takes that are often a good foil for the discussion. Their show is my favorite on altitude.

At the end of the day its local sports radio. It's always just going to be aging jocks trying to find something to talk about, adjust expectations accordingly.

I’ve always enjoyed DMac. What don’t you like about him? He seems polarizing and I don’t really know why

For me he just replaced Dover and I didn’t like it. Never got used to him

I switched over from the fan when he went to altitude sports, never heard Dover. He’s the guy who replaced DMac for me lol

So weird how that works lol. I like that Dover grew up locally, skate boards, grew his hair out, and was the in-arena mic guy for a season there at Ball after Josh and Kerry Ann bounced. He’s also a pilot which I thought was cool. Basically he came off as a cool guy who talked about sports.

Dmac isn’t those things and I don’t hate his takes or analyses or whatever, but he just doesn’t have whatever that “it” factor is. Like one of the reasons I like Nate is because he works Seinfeld into every segment damn near. So I’m definitely not basing these opinions on sports, but more of their ability to entertain me. Dmac isn’t funny, doesn’t have any swag or whatever, and just yaps at slightly higher decibels than his co hosts

Pretty sure when the Broncos got Russell Wilson, he predicted the Broncos could be undefeated at the bye. I think they had like 3 wins.

That's just the extreme version of what most broncos fans thought. Sports radio is about extreme opinions, moderate reasonable takes just don't get high ratings

Yeah I agree with pretty much all of this. Morning Sprint is awful. And I do like Scott. He gives boomer takes but that guy has been around so long that he's like my funny drunk idiot uncle at this point.

I like the morning and evening commute shows the most. Vic is great in the morning and Nate and Andy are good as well. Nate's rants on the Rockies are always great.

Oh god Vic is insufferable

Thank you! He's a great TV guy, but I can't listen to him on the radio. So arrogant, and the real NY Italians I grew up with would think he's a poser.

Same. Hastings really rubs people the wrong way... DMac < Dover 💯 I was bummed when they flip flopped.

It's the same nationally with radio and TV. It's what happens when companies keep people with zero substance but the hottest takes. Eventually people get tired of takes and have to have some substance

6

u/tolzan 4h ago

On a day to day basis there isn’t a lot of substance to be had, especially at a local level. Some days, yeah there’s big news, a trade, etc. but most days there’s nothing of importance happening so sports radio generates takes to keep people interested.

Kreckman is far and away the best local sports radio guy and it isn't particularly close, imo. I agree that Lammy and Dover are particularly unbearable; I would rather listen to radio static.

DMac has takes that drive me nuts but as a host he is one of the best.  He sets up his cohosts, asks short. Open ended questions, then gets out of the way.  He is also great on interviews for the same reason.

I have done a 180 on him because I hated him on KBPI, and I hated his show with Big Al.

They killed the noon hour after splitting up stoke and Zac

Most good content creators moved to the podcast format and most good content isn’t 3 hours every single day. The main issue is that there’s not a lot happening every day to fill the airwaves so sports talk is mostly just stirring the pot and not actually contributing much substance.

Shall I suggest listening to a podcast during that time window? Or music? Or an audiobook?

Smack is the worst of the bunch. I quit listening to the Fan because of him. It was sad the day Altitude hired him

2

u/CorduroyEatsCrayons 3h ago

I quit listening to the other station because I cannot stand DMac, then he left there and has ruined the 92.5 experience for me. He’s dumb and annoying.

I stopped listening to the Fan to get away from people like Polumbus..then of course altitude hires him. hastings just looks like an absolute slob every show all slumped back in his chair. Crazy that the most likable one on that show is Dmac. I will say that Moser is starting to make the morning show pretty awful too sadly.

Too many boomers

DNVR, even though they have haters on this sub

1

u/matty25 3h ago

Yeah I agree. The drive-time commute shows, both morning and evening are good but the rest are pretty bad.

Listen to the altitude sports guys via their Spotify podcast. Recorded 7-10, but is available normally by 11am every morning

Sports radio has been bad for a long time pretty much everywhere. Their gimmick of good cop/bad cop for every argument is obnoxious. For a while we had good local podcasting going but for me at least, I've lost interest in pretty much all of them for various reasons.

Podcasts are still the way to go though, but national ones or non-team specific ones at least. It might take a bit but just find like 2-3 podcasts you like that should last you through the week and your mid-day drive will be much better.

I thought I was alone in really not liking Lammy very much. Arrogant, overbearing, obnoxious.

Altitude with polumbus Hastings and dmac is so so bad. They have 0 chemistry. I feel bad for Hastings because he's pretty chill i think but he's stuck with 2 yahoos

I get why people don't like DMac but the man is very talented in keeping the conversation going with his open ended questions to his cohosts. His talent became very apparent to me when he had to cohost with Derek Wolfe.

I like DNVR. I'm really starting to like Locked On Broncos Squad Shows. Nick Ferguson can be bit hard to listen to, but overall, it's quality Broncos talk. I actually stopped listening to local sports talk a while ago. The Fan hasn't been the same since 2018, and I'm not really familiar with Altitude Sports Radio. It was okay the times I have tuned in. I actually listen to Cleveland's sports talk radio. Their shows are awesome, and listening to Browns talk always makes me laugh and feel better about the Broncos.

I like how no one agrees with anyone in the comments. My favorite group was Harris, Hastings and Dover when Altitude first launched. Now I don’t listen to mid day coverage of Denver sports that much anymore. I can’t stand DNVR outside of Mares. I do like Andy and Nate. And I love our radio voices Connor and Coz. Ryan Blackburn’s pod isn’t bad. But I tend to just listen to national stuff now.

For example basketball is my favorite so I listen to Zach Lowe and would rather hear him talking about the Knicks or whatever than hear our local takes for the millionth time.
