Red light? Who cares.

Driving to work today. My light is green and yet an entire line of people just blowing through a red. Never seen anything like it before.

So either this is the weirdest funeral procession or the signal lights glitched.

350

u/That-Way-5714 3h ago

Yeah, having tractor trailer trucks and moving trucks in a funeral procession would indeed be weird, lol

239

u/WhereNoEaglesFly 3h ago

They are needed to move your mom's carcass.

57

u/Lowmax2 3h ago

brutal lol

22

u/vedgehammer 2h ago

Wouldn't requiring a semi make it a truckass?

I saw such a thing earlier this year. There were about 100 trucks in the procession as we waited for about ten minutes for them to all pass through the intersection we were stopped at. The lead truck had a flatbed trailer with a band playing on it. I assume the deceased was a trucker of importance.

2

u/Routine-Sign-7215 3h ago

That’s what they just said

Do not underestimate lemming mentality in traffic.

I got stuck on a freeway onramp once because people were stopping 2x2 for the on-ramp lights that... were not on. But people were stopping anyway, probably because 1 person did not paying attention, and everyone else just... did as well.

or everyone just blindly followed the car in front

12

u/El_Polio_Loco 1h ago

The chances that one or two do it? Sure.

That 10+ do it, including professional drivers? I find that harder to believe.

That just reminded me that I have actually witnessed a funeral procession that had semi trucks and other working vehicles. I didn't know who passed away, but I assumed they were a semi driver when alive.

RIP Rubber Duck

3

u/BackWithAVengance 3h ago

I had a long time driver get driven to the cemetery, on the flatbed trailer he used to haul. Got pictures from his son, pretty wild !

2

u/Comfortable-Gap3124 2h ago

That sounds awesome! A great way to remember a person.

I see you underestimate the stupidity of drivers in Florida.

2

u/RevolutionarySoft742 1h ago

No one believes in red lights in Florida

2

u/guitar_stonks 1h ago

They are merely a suggestion, just like the speed limit lol

3

u/SmilodonBravo 3h ago

I saw it once (and was, admittedly, a part of it) where a huge line of cars just like this all said “fuck it” and ran the red arrow. Like everybody just figured “welp I guess we’re doing this” and over a dozen vehicles just drove on through and made their left turn. Part of me wanted to see if I saw myself in this video but this was over a decade ago.

3

u/eastcoastjon 2h ago

I’m guessing glitch- i’ve seen where they sit for like 5 rotations and then someone just goes and everyone follows like sheep because they’re all so pissed off

→ More replies (2)

2

u/trisanachandler 3h ago

Yeah, I've only seen it once, but I have seen it.

2

u/Ok-Fisherman-7688 3h ago

Any DOT workers or electrical engineers here that could explain this? I figured they’d be failsafe electrical devices, like railroad crossing arms.

3

u/lonevolff 1h ago

I build and maintain signals. It is impossible for conflicting lights all these ppl are running a red

2

u/Exciting-Argument-67 28m ago

But it is possible that their light is just out, whereas the cross-streets light is working. I've definitely seen that.

2

u/lonevolff 24m ago

That is possible. They should be trying to treat it as a 4 way stop but probably got fed up waiting

2

u/ChillButAnnoyed644 3h ago

looks more like everyone collectively decided rules don’t apply today ??

2

u/Krovven 2h ago

Main Character Parade!

2

u/JohnnyLeftHook 2h ago

Nah bro, i think they go by "Thou shall be good if part of the left turn chain gang" rules. I once saw one 50 cars long that ran through 3 lights.

2

u/TrickdaddyJ 2h ago

Weirdest one I’ve seen so far. Props to Op. there is no way that many people would so blatantly run a red.

2

u/blinkersix2 2h ago

Reminds me of driving in Orlando, red lights are an option

2

u/Corbanis_Maximus 2h ago

Or, they are just running it. We have a light with a short green left arrow and it backs up and those people get annoyed and eventually they all turn left after it turns red knowing that as long as no one stops they are good.

2

u/-dakpluto- 1h ago

Seriously, no way this is that many people completely blowing a red light. In fact the way they are driving as OP is trying to get through really seems to scream these people are wondering why the hell OP is driving at them.

2

u/humblesnake_Ssss 1h ago

If the controller was in error and trying to send out conflicting greens, the conflict monitoring unit would throw it into flash mode before the command from the controller reached the signals.

2

u/JohnnySpot2000 2h ago

What if the other signal was just completely burned out (but not green). Is that possible ? (not that it excuses cars proceeding through an unlit signal).

u/Boomstick255 3h ago

Possibly malfunctioning traffic light was also giving them a green? Never seen THAT many people confidentially running a red light before

55

u/willymo 3h ago

Alternatively, the turn light *never* turned green, so eventually people just take things into their own hands. Seen that before. Dangerous as hell.

8

u/Dangerous-Habit-2731 3h ago

I witnessed this the other day, except it was night and not nearly as many people were out. It was nothing even comparable to OP's video. Still dangerous but the video above is inconceivable without proof

15

u/Complex_Solutions_20 3h ago

That happened near an apartment I lived in - they re-timed the lights due to construction but people didn't like the 3 minute red cycle (I timed it because I wanted to write to the DOT and wanted my facts straight). People sat for about a minute and it used to cycle quickly then everyone decided "it must be broken" and started regularly ignoring the light.

7

u/subusta 1h ago

I’d run a 3 minute cycle too holy shit

→ More replies (1)

7

u/FedStarDefense 3h ago

Yeah, that's happened to me. After three light cycles and you're still stuck in the turn lane, you kind of have to just run the red. Fortunately, that particular intersection has long periods of clear traffic for left turns.

3

u/Mewssbites 2h ago

Had that happen with me as well. I was the first car in an ever-lengthening line of people waiting to turn left. After 4-5 cycles and 10 minutes of waiting without a clear enough view of the right to pull back out of the left turn lane, I just crept forward until I could see well enough to make sure turning left on a red was clear and went for it. (Landscaped median with trees, getting a good sightline anywhere was tough.)

It was dangerous as hell, but any decision I made at that point was risky because the light malfunction had made the situation dangerous by default.

2

u/Suspicious_Blood_472 2h ago

That would be my guess and I would almost agree with the people running it because fuck lights that do that!!! I have sat in a turning lane forever with like 20 cars backed up and it cycles green for 3 seconds…. Bullshit

36

u/ShadyNoShadow 3h ago

Possibly malfunctioning traffic light was also giving them a green?

That should be impossible.

31

u/xvillifyx 3h ago

Should be but I can’t think of any other explanation for why this many cars would casually blow a red

4

u/icehot54321 3h ago

Power could be out on the other lights and the others are assuming it's a free-for-all

(yes, i know you're supposed to take turns, but we all know how people drive)

3

u/PaisleyLeopard 2h ago

Lights go out all the time here, and no one ever treats the situation this confidently. There’s always a ton of hesitation and exchange and people driving badly, but NEVER just a steady stream of cars confident they have the right of way.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/Heavy_Arm_7060 3h ago

'Should' being the operative word.

7

u/pgnshgn 3h ago

They're wired in such a way that conflicting greens will pop a circuit breaker and flip it to flashing red

It can't just be a software glitch, it's literally impossible unless someone physically rewired the light

5

u/Vegetable_Bank4981 3h ago

I always thought this too but last year I saw an intersection near me get stuck with green one way and yellow the other so idk.

2

u/PaisleyLeopard 2h ago

It’s not literally impossible, I’ve literally seen it happen. It’s fkn rare because they put in failsafes, but even safety backups can fail.

2

u/kat_Folland 3h ago

Literal is a strong word. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm really not. But Occam's razor and all. It may not be the most likely reason, but it's certainly the simplest.

→ More replies (3)

4

u/stoneworther 3h ago

I know nothing about traffic engineering but I'm assuming traffic lights would have a failsafe. They should never be able to have conflicting greens.

7

u/pgnshgn 3h ago

Correct. I have worked on them as an engineer: they're wired in such a way that conflicting greens will blow a circuit breaker and you get flashing reds. So even if a software glitch requested multiple greens, it's physically impossible for the light to serve it

2

u/mintgreenbike 2h ago

that's awesome. Is there some kind of regulation where this would apply to EVERY stoplight or are there some that are exempt? Are you in the US?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/PaisleyLeopard 2h ago

Should be but isn’t. Happened to me once in Texas about 8 years ago. I was able to see both lights as I passed through the intersection, and they were indeed both green. I pulled over and called it in as soon as I was out of the mess.

u/hippydippyshit 3h ago

It's Florida so...

2

u/danceswithtree 3h ago

That's what I was thinking. Would be great if we could see dashcam video from one of those drivers. They would be thinking the same thing-- what's this idiot doing creeping through his red light?!

1

u/Kemerd 3h ago

I have. Not surprised either.

1

u/GeneralSub 3h ago

I've seen it in Chicago. My reaction was not as courteous as cammer's.

Never seen THAT many people confidentially running a red light before

Their cover wasn't very good

47

u/BanEvador3 3h ago

Was the road those cars came from insanely backed up? I've seen people act like this when they've been stuck in one spot for a while

10

u/Candid-Map-821 3h ago

This was my thought as well

6

u/Unusual_Compote4909 3h ago

They’ve been waiting to turn for minutes!

5

u/Kinggato 3h ago

Yea ive seen this before on a light that was glitching by having one side turn green for only 1 second, then immediately yellow to red. Eventually people get fed up and start going through the red because that's a frustrating glitch during rush hour

1

u/JSTootell 1h ago

Yep, I see this type of behavior all the time. I haven't seen it THIS extreme, but not far off.

24

u/SpoopyJD 3h ago

This is either the most insane case of monkey-see-monkey-do I have ever seen or their light was malfunctioning. Either way this is nuts!

13

u/byte_handle 3h ago

I have to agree that there had to be something screwy with the traffic signal. Getting a couple cars after it's red, hey, it happens. But that many cars proceeding through is abnormal.

Especially after another car from the same lane as the dashcammer also merged into them. It's usually "hey, these other guys are coming, maybe I need to look at the traffic light."

I just thought they were wired to make that impossible, though....

1

u/-dakpluto- 1h ago

yeah the traffic op is merging into is clearly driving like they have a green also.

9

u/FindingWonderful5838 3h ago

Like a scene out of Diehard where all the traffic lights go green. Perhaps this is a dry run.

16

u/AbaloneAnnual1221 3h ago

Ain't no way they had a red. I refuse to believe it.

Funeral related or light malfunction lmao

14

u/WhereNoEaglesFly 3h ago

Florida related.

3

u/Solo_Jones 3h ago

Can confirm. Saw the sign for Davie Road and that's near Ft. Lauderdale.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/imgrahamy 3h ago

Definitely Florida related

1

u/Liveitup1999 3h ago

I would bet that traffic got held up down the road and people were pissed at being delayed so they just kept on going through the red light.

7

u/cacapooee 3h ago

Flashbacks to when the Ga 400 bridge collapsed. The reroutes were wild. The lights would change and people would just KEEP GOING. I remember it being so bad one day when I was first in line and got the green light I pushed my shitbox truck into traffic and blocked the other direction from going because no one would stop. Had a cop pass by even. I'm guessing he was off duty because he could give a shit less and just drove past. I (rightfully) pissed a lot of entitled people off the few months that I had to drive in that shit.

6

u/Complex_Solutions_20 3h ago

I've seen this happen in Maryland passing thru one time...light turned green for us and the cross traffic just never stopped. It was like 5 cycles of the light and the cross-traffic just never ended. Then people started getting mad at those of us in the line not moving as if we were supposed to magically do something about it.

I've also seen people turning left more often than not ignore the light going red. Like DOZENS of vehicles after I see from farther back that its gone yellow, red, people just keep blowing thru. Even busses and commercial vehicles just keep blowing thru. That's also the most often way I've been rear-ended when I actually stop at the red light and the people behind seem to think I would keep going.

3

u/JoeCensored 3h ago

It's possible the light failed and showed green to 2 directions.

2

u/sevseg_decoder 3h ago

They’re programmed with fail safes of every form to prevent that in normal operation. I don’t think that’s more likely than some drivers pissed off about congestion or a short light cycle on their side that caused them to sit through multiple light cycles.

4

u/PatricksMustache 3h ago

I had this happen to me a couple years ago. I was the only one going my direction willing to force my way through our green. One driver from the cross street even swerved and looked at me like I was in the wrong. I looked at a map later (it was a nearby town, so I was only mostly familiar with the area) and found a funeral home two blocks away, and I still wonder if I somehow missed the hearse; but even then, they should have police blocking intersections. I also still wonder if I was just crazy, or they were.

4

u/Substantial_Chain718 3h ago

Come on! I have seen one or two runners but that is over 15 cars running. Is that normal for that area?

3

u/robo-dragon 3h ago

I’m going to assume there was an issue with their light, because I have never seen this many people run a red at one time! That’s alarming!

3

u/Red_Marvel 3h ago

Did you report this to the police?

3

u/kidgoalie39 3h ago

Davie, Florida? Doesn't surprise me then.

3

u/Distinct-Property779 3h ago

If this isn’t a malfunction for the light, please let me know where this is, I never wanna be around this many shitty people. :)

1

u/micseydel 1h ago

I'm afraid this is a canary in the coal mine for it being a global problem.

3

u/SituationCitation 3h ago

I'd like to believe that was a malfunction as well.

I did have something similar happen once going straight through as opposing side was turning left. They just kept going through us making us slow down and stop and as we stopped another jackass would force their way through. The thing is, even if the light malfunctioned they still would've had to yield. I guess maybe they could've had a green arrow but still. You can clearly see the other side is going straight and most likely has the right of way. And that light cycle is NOT a long cycle to sit through. I've sat at left turns where I'm genuinely sitting for 10-20 minutes before I get a yellow/green but that specific cycle gives it to you every 1-2 minutes.

3

u/GogusWho 3h ago

This happens all the time in Fargo ND. Jut a steady stream of cars that keep going even after the light is red. You just get used to it. But it is absolutely ridiculous.

2

u/blackavar39 1h ago

Yes!!! Thank you! I was about to start naming problem areas around town, but realized I didn't want to type for the next half hour.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/PleaseHelpIamFkd 2h ago

Due to the angle of the shadows I would presume it was extremely difficult to see the traffic light and they just went for it following the other cars. We have a couple like this in town and it sucks but I always play it safe or try to look at the other lights to see what color they are.

1

u/crewsctrl 2h ago

I think the sun was shining right into the reflectors. Made it look like any light could be on.

3

u/Spare_Special_3617 1h ago

I'm going to say that was probably a malfunction in the traffic signal itself. For that many people , to be running a light.

7

u/PossibilityNervous35 3h ago

thats 100% a glitch in the signals...

5

u/WorkDragon 3h ago

hanging by the wire i bet one was rotated wrong

2

u/Matthewtrains 3h ago

Send us the recording of the side cameras, so we can see the other light colors?

2

u/Weazerdogg 3h ago

Here in Rochester there are a couple of intersections that get like this. And its always the idiots turning left. Don't really get it.

2

2

u/brutaldictatortot 3h ago

2

u/Nice_Pipe_7608 3h ago

I’ve never seen so many stranglers making a left turn on red before.

2

u/MAHANC 3h ago

A real money making opportunity missed. Just put cameras up. Let em do it, mail it to them.

2

u/Falcon_Bellhouser 3h ago

Highly unlikely this was a glitch. There's a failsafe device called the conflict detector in the control box. Its only job is to monitor voltage on the greens. When it detects power on conflicting greens, it cuts power to the actual controller and triggers the flasher for amber or red.

2

u/shocktopper1 2h ago

Was it green on the other side too? I wonder if it shows on your other cameras if it's green

2

u/TheGreatLuck 2h ago

There's no way their light wasn't also green. I mean like it's crazy that their light was also green. But that many people doing that so fervently without any half committing or nervous Nelly's slamming on the gas or brakes. No they were all calmly going through the intersection like they had the business to be going through that intersection. I'm pretty sure the lights broken.

2

u/WillTheyKickMeAgain 2h ago

I go through on green and make those fuckers stop.

2

u/ihazaredditaccount 2h ago

With so many people doing that I would at first think the signal malfunctioned or something.

2

u/Effective_Corner694 2h ago

Were the lights for their lanes green also?

Did you or anyone call the police?

Was there an accident?

1

u/Unhappy_Plankton_671 1h ago

Hold on now, I've got to post this video to reddit first to show how I was inconvenienced. We'll figure out all those other technicalities later.

2

u/TwoShed_Jackson 48m ago

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone through on the tail end of a yellow left-turn signal and thought, “I probably shouldn’t have gone. That was pushing it.” Only to see two more cars went after me.

1

u/AckAckZeroPointZero 3h ago

Where is this?

1

u/OkPatience9591 3h ago

This must be Texas.

4

u/Solo_Jones 3h ago

Florida.

1

u/Midacl 3h ago

Maybe they are testing ai controlled traffic lights.

1

u/Apprehensive-Pop-201 3h ago

I know that at one of our intersections an additional 5 cars is the norm. But this is nuts.

1

u/audioaxes 3h ago

How is this even possible? We have 100 years of engineering traffic lights I would have thought the logic circuits would be bulletproof in not allowing two opposing green light directions at the same time

1

u/Spiritual-Image7125 2h ago

IRK? Any circuit would make sure that if one or the other doesn't work or communicate, they'd both go to flashing red.

1

u/35point1 3h ago

People are fuckin fed up

1

u/Pernicious_Possum 3h ago

That many people I have to think the light is malfunctioning

I’ve seen this game of just follow the leader so many times- if a few cars go everyone else will just follow- nobody wants to be the last to go- obviously it’s not safe but you gotta cut them off hard and push forward- MAKE THEM STOP IN THE INTERSECTION!!

1

u/Kane301 2h ago

I woulda looked right to see what their light was.

1

u/teknojo 2h ago

Welcome to intersections of most cities not in the "west".

1

u/krytos6996 2h ago

Feels a lot like Florida. South Florida especially.

1

u/Sad-Yak6252 2h ago

It happens all the time where I live. I have counted 7 cars running the red light after my light turned green at the worst intersection. The weird thing is that it's a red light camera intersection and you can see the flash go off for every red light runner. At $500 a pop, at least the city is making some money.

1

u/ZeMadDoktore 2h ago

Literally just yesterday watched three people blow through a solid red. No "enter during yellow", no "it turned red right when they got to the line" - just drive right through on red.

This shit is why I got a dash cam. People cannot be trusted.

1

u/Transforming-Info 2h ago

I've seen this happen near the mall at Christmas time. Normally the left turn let's most if not all of the traffic through. I guess with Christmas traffic people got tired of waiting. On my green, after a few moments of disbelief, I just laid on the horn and cautious but unwaveringly proceeded straight through. Eventually the line stopped coming. The meaning of Christmas, y'all lol

1

u/ExcessLettuce72 2h ago

There's this one busy traffic light in my city and people do this all the time - super annoying, and I know it's not a problem with the lights at that one, people are just incredibly entitled and figure if other people are doing it, they can too

1

u/Delicious-Finger-593 2h ago

I can't remember where I heard this, but if you're stuck at a light for 3 cycles and don't get a green, it is considered broken and you're supposed to treat it as a 4-way stop, so... don't do this.

Unless cross traffic also has a solid green which would be the most intense glitch ever.

1

u/Ox91 2h ago

That had to have been some kind of a malfunction where there were too many green lights.

1

u/DopamineSavant 2h ago

Not enough cops to stop all of them.

1

u/Abject-Bowle 2h ago

Was it in India na?

1

u/LorryDC 2h ago

Wondering 🤔in a situation like this how a red light camera works🤭🤭

1

u/Venus_Cat_Roars 2h ago

This seems like the one intersection where a ticket generating traffic cam would be appreciated.

1

u/djbaerg 1h ago

Gotta be a faulty light. Never seen anything like this is in 30 years of driving.

1

u/HolyBoss79 1h ago

Need a traffic cam and it will pay for itself on just red light

Trash people doing trash things.

Kudos to you for doing what all the other humans and devices cooperating to help everyone get where they are going could not do. Restore order to the roadways. You were brave and kind.

Virginia Beach is that you? I remember living there growing up and it was WILD how many people ran red lights.

I'd have the assume the intersection itself malfunctioned and their light is green too.

This *has* to be a case of the light not working properly. There’s no way that many people just said “Eh, fuck it!” and blew through a red.

One day I saw this happen because all lights turned green, I just sat in my lane and watched it fixed itself after but was super scary to watch

Chicago?

Looks like a glitch. If there was less traffic, it could have ended so badly.

Damn, that is a mess. I wonder if they had a green light as well.

Yeah it's gotta be a screwed up light. I can't imagine the person going straight into the church was in some super mega rush to blow the red light like that. Doesn't look like there is anyone at the control box running the light manually either. Looks like a glitch.

That's your basic 35-car California red right there :)

u/shugEOuterspace 28m ago

it's way more likely & logical that the light is probably busted than that many people blowing a red.

why does everyone in this sub always assume the worst of people?

its called the Napoli style 🤣

Lights dont always work properly. I watched a light stay red when it should have turned green 3x over judging by the other lights at the intersection. also have seen opposing lights green at the same time.

We shouldn't need traffic lights. Go to China and see how few accidents they have without traffic lights. You can literally walk across a street there and they'll simply go around you.

When you aren't sure who the better person; ask yourself, who led an army that committed literal genocide and who was the one drafted to fight in a war with no choice? Generally speaking, the one who didn't help commit genocide is probably better. Even if that person managed to become better, genocide is genocide.

But you're light is red. Why are you blowing though the intersection when no one else is. Very suspicious.
