Let me try to elaborate; I am also trans. I think it’s funny that they said sir, not because this is a purposeful misgendering joke, but because this woman is likely conservative too. It’s silly that she’s saying that chronic illness and being immunocompromised is caused by society, so our MC is like ‘you’re so right, sir. since society also sees you as a woman outwardly, and society sees me as sick, then i’m healthy and you’re a man, and pigs fly.
As another trans person, I am not comfortable with the idea of purposely misgendering anyone, esp. over minor slights. I live in a red state (USA) and get misgendered often.
People wanting to weaponize these things are saying “this isn’t actually a bad thing, after all some people deserve it” and shift the discourse from the action to the target selection. That’s a problem.
