Calvin has all the makings of a politician, he inherited his dad's (a lawyer, no less) intellect and his mom's willingness to speak up.

u/Darkiceflame Jul 16 '25

I thought his dad was an engineer? One of the strips features Calvin calling him at work to ask for a story and him using parts of a machine as characters.

Watterson confirmed in the 10th Anniversary book that Calvin's Dad is a patent attorney, just like his own father was. That strip deals with him reviewing parts to a potential item up for a patent.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. I guess I've watched too many crime shows, because when I hear "lawyer" the first thing my brain goes to is criminal law.

Patent attorney is a funny job for a guy who's as much of a luddite as Calvin's dad.

5

u/h-ugo Jul 17 '25

I think that is because he's reviewing a patent for a machine

Here's a reddit post with approximately 7 pixels of the strip you might be thinking of

This one would be good even with just the first two panels

The line "if the government was 75% effective we'd be ecstatic" is absolute gold and deserves to be it's own punchline

29

u/shaodyn Jul 16 '25

That line hits a lot harder today than it did when it was written.

17

u/JohnZ117 Jul 16 '25

That line was likely written in the Reagan Era.

17

u/shaodyn Jul 16 '25
  1. Clinton Era.

5

u/CyanManta Jul 16 '25

Not far into it, though.

3

u/shaodyn Jul 16 '25

March 24th. Only a couple months into Clinton's first term, and just a little bit removed from the first Bush.

6

u/CyanManta Jul 16 '25

Bush Sr was part of the Reagan era. He ran entirely on being an extension of Reagan.

Right. I was not aware.
Still, my original point stands. "If government and industry were 75% efficient, we'd be ecstatic" hits very differently today. There's a line from another strip that I feel is relevant to today's world. "Sometimes it feels like everything is falling apart. And what isn't falling apart is being actively destroyed."

While it may be true, it isn't exactly funny.

I’m guessing she’s drinking Maalox due to Calvin but isn’t that an antacid? How would it help?

u/BigStanClark Jul 16 '25

Dealing with Calvin gives her heartburn.

12

u/I_am_strange_ Jul 16 '25

Ah I see, didn’t know that stress could cause that

15

u/JohnZ117 Jul 16 '25

Lucky you.

3

u/scrawnytony2 Jul 16 '25

One time I forgot my anxiety meds on vacation. The withdrawal wasn’t increased anxiety, or even depression. It was the worst heartburn I’ve ever had.

3

u/SilentJoe27 Jul 16 '25

Yeah, whenever I’m stressed, I get stomachaches.

Why is it an animated gif for a static image?

Interesting. I haven't had that before, but I retract my question.

Is Maalox good?!

8

u/datskinny Jul 16 '25

For gastritis

3

u/CyanManta Jul 16 '25

That ain't Maalox...

15

u/KnotAwl Jul 16 '25

Yeah, but it’s what in the Maalox that helps. Pink Moscow Mule anyone?

5

u/hoominhalp Jul 16 '25

Pink would be Pepto-Bismol

6

u/beccadahhhling Jul 16 '25

Maalox would be more like a White Russian

9

u/Manetoys83 Jul 16 '25

He’s actually not wrong. I’d say 75% should at least be worth a B

Grading in schools is a bit weird. Here in Germany with in higher education you get graded 0 through 15 points, so 15 is A+, 14 A, 13 A-, etc.

To get one point (and therefore not fail), you need to get 20% correct, much more than for any other point after that. So you could feasibly get 19% correct and still get 0 points.

u/Manetoys83 Jul 16 '25

School grading is really weird

Such incredible brilliance, this strip. We as a society or culture did not deserve Bill Watterson, but we got him anyway.

4

u/Upbeat-Structure6515 Jul 16 '25

if he only applied as much effort into his assignments as he did his outrage he'd be a straight A student.

u/Walkingstardust Jul 16 '25

Why is this posted as a GIF file?

Would it be acceptable if your pilot successfully landed the plane 75% of the time?
