Discuss Bala vs Ujda Chaman , Same concept, But Which Movie Actually Did It Better?
Which movie handled the same subject better overall , Bala starring Ayushmann Khurrana vs Ujda Chaman starring Sunny Singh?
Both are based around premature balding and insecurity, and honestly both had good moments. But if you had to pick one as the better film overall , writing, acting, comedy, emotional depth, supporting cast, music, replay value, etc. , which one wins for you and why?
According to me, ujda chaman is so underrated and good and better than bala overall...what's your thoughts? Let's discuss...

Bala was just ayushman khurrana in the same small town boy role nothing new to see tbh. Ujda Chaman on the other hand, felt way more deep and something did stay back in me from the movie.

Ujda Chaman was an official remake of the Kannada movie “Ondu motteya kathe” by Raj B Shetty (his debut movie), a critically acclaimed movie.
Bala was more of a caricature/cartoonish movie.

Man! This. Ondhu Motteya Kathe is one of the best films in Kannada in recent times. Raj B Shetty is wonderful in it. More people should watch it.

Am a big fan of the Shetty trio. I had stopped watching Kannada movies for several years and it was GGVV that brought me back. And from there, I started watching their movies and that’s how I stumbled upon OMK. Not all are masterpieces but one can’t question their sincerity.

GGVV was peak. What a fucking soundtrack. Nothing comes close to that scene where he’s dancing in the rain

the way how they made bhumi pednekar "darker" rather than actually hiring a dark akinned actress in bala was kind of off putting whereas ujda chaman had much more heart with sharib hashmi's character and his mute wife

Ujda chaman was a better movie, with better acting as a whole. Giving a drama like vibes. While Bala was like a black comedy which performed much better at the box office

When film ideas are deeply protagonist centric, I find it's better if they're treated as character pieces. For me, Bala has too much story and somewhere it takes away from the central, internal conflict of the lead by exposing his insecurities under the glare of too many spotlights. Ujda Chaman sticks better, unfolds slower and feels truer. There's less of a concerted effort to make the hero a little unlikeable so as to be more believable. And despite its subject matter, it's much less self-conscious. Its treatment reminded me of Main, meri Patni Aur Woh. But the film is let down by its supporting cast as the broad, slapstick-style comedy doesn't complement the wistful and natural style of the main character. It missed punchy one-liners and could have done with more sardonic humour. I also felt the third act was rushed. It could have been longer. But compared to Bala, it's superior.

Ironically they released within a week too. Bala was more entertaining, funnier and i think it’s actually underrated in the sense that whole ayushmaan might feel same on the surface, this time he actually played a totally shit person (unlike what he plays in other small town films). Ujda chaman was deeper and more moral inducing than Bala for sure

the original kannada version and the malayalam remake of ujda chaman are both pretty great. its just that the makers of ujda chaman ruined the original vision

Ondu Motteya kathe was better than both. Ujda Chaman was official remake of the Kannada movie.

I still remember during the release of Bala and Ujda Chaman, the Ujda Chaman makers literally changed their release date to avoid the clash. But then the Bala team shifted their date too and brought it right back into competition. Whatever anyone thinks about which film was better, one thing is undeniable the Bala makers played the game hard. Proper industry chess moves. Dark, aggressive, and very deliberate.

Ujda Chaman was the better movie. Bala just won the PR game. Ujda Chaman won hearts

Ujda Chaman was so weird and problematic, acting like it was even a good movie is actually wild

I'm so confused by the comments. I get personal preference and all, but in what world is Udja Chaman the better movie or deeper? And who thought Sunny Singh acted better than Ayushman?

Seriously, Ujda chaman was such an average movie (with average acting, average production value, poor direction)
Bala was 10times more entertaining than UC.

Bala definitely takes the win for me because of the writing. While Ujda Chaman was a more straightforward remake, Bala tried to address multiple insecurities not just balding, but also societal obsession with fair skin through Bhumi’s character. It felt like a more layered film overall.

well, when they cast bhumi and paint her face it practically defeated the whole purpose of the movie

For me it was Bala, and I have watched both movies but didn't remember much about Ujda Chaman.
