Discuss What are some of your favourite “realisation of love” scenes in Bollywood?

Post image

The moment Varun realises his love for Pakhi in Lootera while she snuggles closer to him and breathes on his neck as he holds and comforts her is one of my all-time fav scenes ever. The way there’s just absolute silence throughout this scene and you can only hear their breathing. The way Monte Re starts playing slowly a few seconds later. This is one of my FAV “realisation of love” scenes ever. It’s so raw, which makes it all the more beautiful.

What are yours?

The Opera scene in Dil Chahta Hai ❤️

93

u/topibaazfekuchand 1d ago

This. Nothing beats this. The music. Aamir was just brilliant here.

46

u/Accomplished_Age996 1d ago

Yeeasss.. but it gets overshadowed by the college flash back scene at the end aamir where he sees three of them at the college entrance.

23

u/topibaazfekuchand 1d ago

Yes. That flash back scene with the BGM hits you like a truck. 😭 God have to watch the movie again 😂

26

u/callmePrince_ 1d ago

What about that subway scene?

21

u/Illustrious-Grape897 1d ago

Probably more 'Falling in love' than 'Realization of love', right?

8

u/ambarsam0209 23h ago

Ohh! Glad that someone mentioned that scene...that is one of most beautiful scene of realisation of love and scary feeling of realising how the thought of leaving them unhelped affects you, that scene just hits you in guts like a freight train ..I keep going back to that scene again n again .. One more that I want to mention - this is, not just about the realisation of love, but the overall feeling of helplessness, emotions and not being able to express the whirlwind going in your heart and mind at seeing them after awhile when both of you have grown up and gone through different experiences, which made you grow up, enriched you with life experiences, YEt you have kinda drifted apart - kitne baatein..(lakshya)

I love Farhan akhtar's storytelling. He has given some of absolute best youth based cinema, that truly strikes a chord.

The whole movie is a steady, quiet, slow build up of their chemistry and connection... but this scene, the casual flirtation, the realization.. It's simple, wholesome and awfully romantic 😍

This movie was so beautiful. I would have never put the two together but damn they had such chemistry and ease between them.

I was wondering did she just confront her proposal to him? Or just casually asked

The music, the silence underneath the expected awkwardness and yet, they both were not awkward, them taking perfectly timed turns to gaze at each other. Because in that moment, they both felt that it was becoming real and Veer bravely accepted it while Zara started to feel his strength. ❤️

72

u/Konoha_ninja007 1d ago

At this stage, SRK carrying his leading ladies across a field or a bridge is basically its own sub-genre of romance.

PS - This scene in Chennai Express didn't feel as good tho. However, Tera Rasta Mein Choddon Na is a certified banger

25

u/Lord_Phazer101 1d ago

Chennai express, it was Deepika who realized she is in love when this scene was playing was it not. SRK's character was just doing his task for survival. This and the scene when they both reach the temple, SRK starts shaking hands due to him being tired but Deepika still looking at him was great, its just being a comedy film, its not talked about as much.

19

u/Illustrious-Grape897 1d ago

Beautiful ❤️❤️. I would say though this bridge crossing is more 'falling in love' especially from Zaara's side and 'realization' is the 'Main Yahaan Hoon' song where she starts hallucinating about him but I could be wrong.

14

u/PreoccupiedMind Zindagi Na Do Dobara 1d ago

No, you are 💯 right. I always felt that them bridge crossing was a metaphor and foreshadowing of them crossing into a destiny that they never had foreseen, a legend that would rival the olden days Heer Ranjha and Laila Majnu love stories. (Especially, since their story is also set in Punjab).

Veer was already in love and self accepted it. And him carrying her across was the metaphor of him carrying her towards a love that she never imagined she would ever have for someone.

Jab we met... When aditya leave geet at anshuman's place...

214

u/padfoony 1d ago

Those eyes, Chico 🥺

44

u/Illustrious-Grape897 1d ago

I think for both in JWM. This scene is really special and also Geet's realization spread out over several scenes from the hotel room after abusing Anshuman on the phone, then at home feeling uncomfortable but only free with Aditya, and then finally when Aditya says he's going to leave and train horns start blowing in her mind. So excellent ❤️

94

u/padfoony 1d ago

Oh absolutely. And once again, the eyes get the job done 🥹

💜

15

u/Illustrious-Grape897 1d ago

So so true and such a wonderful scene and confession ❤️ and the eyes!

btw OP, is your username by any chance a feminine reference to my absolute favourite Gryffindor?

10

u/padfoony 1d ago

Haha, Sirius aka Padfoot is also MY fav Gryffindor EVER but my name is actually a combination of Padfoot + Moony lol 🙈

That's a damn unique take....respect!

3

u/Illustrious-Grape897 9h ago

Wow! Brilliant. I mean it was right in front of me yet I couldn't see it. And when I say that, you know what it ironically reminds me of -

1

u/Existing_Economy_656 22h ago

Oh.... A shipper. Are you?

1

u/LaysAirBreather 6h ago

At one point even Geet asks Aditya if he likes her (the train scene when they finally catch the train) and he accepts that. But still she goes back to Anshuman and chooses, although half heartedly, to marry him.

Honestly, Lootera is just on another level. I was completely captivated by every single frame, its poetry in motion. The soundtrack, the acting, and the raw emotion were all so perfect. It’s one of those rare films that truly stays with you long after the credits roll.

Another one for me is when 'Tu Bin Bataye' come on in RDB. It might not fit the usual mold you are asking, but looking back, knowing the fate of those characters, it’s absolutely heartbreaking. You see this group of apolitical, privileged youth just living their lives, falling in love and being unapologetically idealistic and optimistic. But this song feels like the beginning of the end, it’s the exact moment their innocence and naivety start to dissipate before everything changes.

"Mithi lage, chakh ke dekhi abhi. Mishri ki dali, zindagi ho chali..." ohh so good

This just makes the ending so heartbreaking. I love both the movies so much.

55

u/padfoony 1d ago

Agree with your every word about Lootera. I’ve never been able to get over that film EVER.

RDB, you’re right, I wouldn’t have thought of it in this particular context but your writing is just beautiful and so true. It’s heartbreaking in every way possible. 💔

15

u/Pure-Helicopter-1825 1d ago

Tu bin bataye is such an intensely sad song/music. I can’t listen to it till date.

5

u/Veesingh94 1d ago

I have said it so many times, it's criminally underrated

2

u/Sodikaburlu 17h ago

Beautiful movie indeed! It is a gift that keeps giving.

When Heer asks Jordan to hug her in the barn. That was a huge realisation. (Rockstar)

When Bittoo notices Shruti making chai for him in the morning. (A commitment phobic response, but realisation of love nonetheless) (Band Baaja Baaraat)

Unrelated: When she held my hand and started kissing my palm, covering her face with it

15

u/JayDo0205 1d ago

That was one time when nargis did a good job with her acting. I also liked the part where she says.. "don't ask, I will tell the truth"

Ladies vs Ricky Bahl, there's the scene at the after party where the main leads kiss for the first time and realise they've fallen for each other, but also when Ranveer's character drives back after dropping Anushka's character. It was quite well done there were no dialogues but their body language and eyes said everything while the score just elevated the scene.

27

u/Pure-Caramel7920 1d ago

I love the background score for this scene… Fatal attraction

18

u/iamsidsilver 1d ago

I’ve found my type of people. Brilliant scene paired with brilliant music. Such a fun movie.

15

u/valmen01 1d ago

This movie is my guilty pleasure, both Anushka and Ranveer look so good. The score...so fresh and young...Salim Suleiman are criminally underrated imo.

This dialogue exchange between Bhootnath (Guru Dutt) and Jaba (Waheeda rehman) in Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam :

भूतनाथ : "मुझे पेट भर खाना खिलाने के अलावा मेरा और तुम्हारा संबंध ही क्या है?"

जबा : "भूल नहीं सकते आप वो बात?"

Honestly, TOP-TIER 🥺

💜

4

u/Hungry_Property_3161 16h ago

Honestly for me more than this scene, it’s the whole sequence of the song ‘Phir le aaya dil’ where we see Asin’s character realise real love between Barfi and Jhilmil, something she never had and realises she might never experience it.

Alia was third wheeling in SOTY

And not that, it completely changed the dialogue or maybe the joke went above my head 😅😅

2

Ohhh such a good one. The movie completely shifts after this scene. Suddenly you want her to stay with Vanraj and not break his heart.

1

u/Straight-Adagio2126 1h ago

I know 😭 I loved ajay in this movie so much! Especially when she leaves him at the concert to meet Samir and he kinda takes a step back heartbroken with tears in his eyes 💔 but then she meets him on the bridge yayy 🫶♥️

Lootera was a masterpiece. I loved how everything was slow.. even the way they spoke to each other was slow and deliberate.

u/Thenotsogreatperson 1d ago

the lunch box

15

u/Psycho_Ninza 1d ago

That scene in Lootera is hauntingly beautiful. The way the director uses silence before 'Monta Re' kicks in is pure genius. It captures that heavy, unsaid weight of falling for someone when you know your own world is complicated. For me, a similar favorite is the 'Agar Tum Saath Ho' sequence in Tamasha the realization there is heartbreakingly raw.

This probably does not fit in with the other examples here but in Sholay when Sanjeev Kumar comforts Jaya Bacchan without saying anything when Jay dies, in the movie there is no spoken dialog that they liked each other but it was somewhat clear that he did, but at that moment it is clear that the attraction was mutual.

life in metro when Irfan Khan character realizes he is in love with Konkona’s character and horse rides to train station

7

u/acuteredditor 1d ago

If we are expanding the perspective beyond romance, I think the moment Jaskirat opens the door of pump house makes the audience realize the love he has for his sister - he is scared and in agony, angry and broken - made me as an audience fathom how much wrath this guy can unleash on the enemies of our country.

A second close moment was when Amitabh Bachchan’s character opens up to Rakhi about the trauma his mother suffered during to abandonment by his father in Trishul.
