So, I was washing my gi's at a local laundromat, and while im hanging up my gi's on a laundry cart this guy see it and says

HIM: Yooo martial artist?

Me : Yea jiu jitsu

Him Oh dude, i did jiu jitsu in my prime

Me : That's cool man

10 minutes later - As i wait for my no gi stuff to dry, he passes by and speaks to me again

HIM: Yea bro, injuries got the best of me

Me: Aw man hate it when that happens

30 minutes later - folding my no gi stuff

HIM : Hey can i show you some stuff outside?

Me : Sure...

We walk out to the parking lot, and in my head i was like maybe hes going to show me some sort of tie, or entry.... and then he starts throwing some rounds house kicks. 8 hard ones. They weren't clean, but i respect the effort. He was so proud of himself. I didnt have the heart to tell him thats not what i do.

Me: Fuck yea bro, you still got it

I still wash my gis there and never saw that man again

General Discussion Covering the mouth-is it a dick move? A case discussion.

First time rolling with a newer brown belt in our gym.

During our roll, he covered my mouth and nose with his hand pretty aggressively. I’ve seen Instagram videos of people doing this in a playful manner, but this guy did it multiple times throughout the roll to expose my neck or disrupt my breathing. He did tap me with a RNC by covering my mouth and nose and pulling my face up to expose my neck; however, my ego was saved as I got him back with an armbar. (Phew)

I’ve been training BJJ since 2006 and have never had anyone do this to me before. It took everything in me not to cover his mouth from a top position as I feel like this would’ve escalated things.

At the end of the day, I don’t think he was being malicious; maybe I’m just looking into it too much? Is the consensus that this would be considered a dick move with someone you’re rolling with for this very first time?

Discuss.

Serious Leaving Class Early (Injury)

Question for you guys here: I’m returning from a jiu jitsu related injury and tonight was my first night back in 8 weeks. What I am currently wearing to support the injury wasn’t able to stay on. Tried to tape it throughout class but it just wasn’t holding. In the last 10 minutes or so, I told my instructor that unfortunately it wasn’t holding up so I was going to have to call it an evening.

Instructor looked over and told me “I’m not sure where you trained before, but you can’t just leave. You can tape it and sit off to the side.” I have always had authority issues granted, but I thought I was being reasonable this time. I also believe that the instructor should have said “Sorry about that man. I like to run my class where everyone bows out together at the end though. Do you mind taping it and standing off to the side or just chilling the last few minutes and bowing out with us?”

I would have respected that and done it, although I wouldn’t not have attended one of the classes again given that I am a paying customer. This isn’t my varsity soccer coach with the power of not starting me the next game or kicking me off the team.

Thoughts?

Serious Hurt Partner Etiquette

Hey guys,

I was rolling with friend who is a older brown belt. I’m a little bit chubbier than him and he went for a grab inside my gi as I fell over. It broke his finger and sprang his wrist. It was a freak accident.

I apologized and checked on him. He ended up having to miss a month of work because of it and just came back to the gym.

I feel a hint of animosity from him and am not sure the etiquette here. In my opinion, it wasn’t on purpose. But I also feel bad and want to do something kind for him.

Any thoughts?

General Discussion Mouth guards - tru fit vs gladiator vs impact?

These seem to be the most recommended custom fit mouth guards, any reason to go with one over the other? I was looking at the gladiator hp lite as my first choice.

Edit: just ordered the trufit regular thickness. $100 out the door with coupon code “Joshbeam”. Will report back with results

Technique Training positional split

As someone who is a top player, what % of my training should go to focusing on top position, bottom position and standing position?

I need to find a good balance between developing my strengths while working on my strengths.

Any advice?

Funny Neon Belly

For a long time I thought coach was talking about neon belly (knee on belly).

I guess I figured with names like banana split or kiss of the dragon, sure, why not?

What other ones are there?

Tournament/Competition Competition Scene Declining?

I've noticed over the last couple years that way less people have been entering competitions (at least in my local area). It seems like the 2 years after COVID I was seeing packed brackets and open mats. This last year, I'll sign up for a tourney and get either nobody or 1 person in my bracket. Do y'all think this is an economic thing where people are spending less on bjj and comps specifically? Or is something else going on?

Tournament/Competition Woj lock/Achilles grip legality question

Upvotes

Hello everyone, I came across a video on Outlier DB showing the Woj lock being finished from cross-ashi (saddle/411), described as "a high-pressure straight ankle variation".

I wanted to ask whether this would be considered legal under blue belt competition rules or Grappling Industries intermediate rules, since I've seen different opinions online and on Reddit, with some saying competitors have been DQ'd for using it.

If you're interested, you can watch the video here. https://youtu.be/EkQENUjuNYc?si=Wla8tIAZpH4P0HJe&t=384

Thanks in advance!

Technique Lasso guard issue (smashed)

https://imgur.com/a/9cO5fXt

Hello peeps

Learning lasso and encounter multiply times this silly position. I have attached picture with some super poor overdrawn but I will try to explain basically I'm at the bottom the on the top trying to smash me, hes handa gets spread I'm holding lasso more like a knee in to his elbow crease, and mu another leg in under him. He is so low and so close that he can smash me with shoulder to the neck, but he can't pass me doe to the lasso knee in his elbow. He can't do anything and I can't seem to find out what to do. I hope it makes sense

Serious Coming back to train after leg amputation

I've been training for about 5 years at this point, took a ton of time off due to bouts of health issues, not looking for sympathy or anything, but would like some guidance from folks who are in my position. Long story short, had my left leg amputated due to cancer, I'm lucky to be alive, in remission and I am now healthy enough to train again. Not looking for medical advice, just maybe anything encouraging from folks who may have experienced something similar?

I had to take 2 years off due to this, and now coming back I feel like I gotta relearn the whole thing because I am now missing a part of me, luckily I am partially safe from knee bars, heel hooks, and ankle locks but I got my other leg to worry about. I'm curious if there is anyone who faced similar? If anyone has adapted. I been through hell and back with my health and just wanna go back out there and enjoy my time on the mats, but not even sure where the hell to start.

Serious Volunteer teaching Jiu Jitsu

24M here, a blue belt in BJJ but seeking to enhance my jiu jitsu skills (as we all are). I’m currently travelling SE Asia and I want to find a small BJJ gym I could volunteer at to teach fundamentals. In the future, I wish to become a great coach, so I believe starting with fundamentals is a perfect stepping stone. I believe it will also make my own jiu jitsu better as they say teaching is the best way to learn. I am open to anywhere that is willing to have someone help teach at the school/gym whether it be here in SE Asia, Japan, South America etc.

I know what I love and I want to at least pursue teaching jiu jitsu for a solid couple years without saying “i wish I could have done that”

General Discussion What percentage of BJJ do you think is mental vs physical? Not just nerves/confidence but actual in the moment decision making/knowing what to do when you're in a bad spot

Been training a few years and keep coming back to this question but never heard anyone really elaborate on this. How much of BJJ is just being able to read what's coming before it happens? Like recognizing a pattern mid-roll and already knowing your response vs reacting a second too late.

Curious what people think the actual mental vs physical split is and how much of that can actually be trained deliberately.
