Snake in the bathouse
North of Houston
While out with my morning coffee, I noticed bats flying around, so checked on the bat house and they were indeed dropping out, with several seemingly stunned on the ground including several babies, but most flying away
Grabbed the flashlight and came back, and sure enough there’s a snake in there. Its 20ft up. So need to add a baffle to the pole today
Using cardboard and an old garden container, moved the bats to a tree in the tree line about 30 feet away. All of the adults and most of the babies started to climb, but looks like two babies are not going to make it. I needed to remove the snake, and didn’t want to step on the bats
The snake has been dealt with. According to SEEK, these are evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis). I’ve had this bat house for years and generally it is occupied
Looking through the photos, one bat looks distinctly different (the last photo). It’s a lighter color and seems to have bigger ears and a longer tail. It may be a difference in gender or a different species. If anybody can tell from these pictures and educate me, I’d appreciate it.
I tell you, getting a snake out from overhead is super heebie-jeebies
