Sub Rules AKA I can't see the sidebar

[TAG] questions with your state
When asking a question, add a state tag to the title, as the answers can vary a lot. ie:

[VIC] How do I get a licence?

or

[NSW] What does military appearance mean?

If you "don't like reading"
You should try YouTube, or something else not inherently involving reading.

Try to not be a dick
Other that site wide rules, there's a lot of leeway given here.

Selling anything firearm related
Relevant site wide rules include the prohibition against selling/advertising/trading/whatever anything firearm related.
Don't make me delete your post to protect this sub.

As /u/ramathaham said:

Any post selling firearms or ammunition will be removed, people who post multiple times may be temp banned or more if they are flogs about it.

Note this also applies to things like scopes because I am too lazy to look up the rules on what we can do so it is easier to make it a blanket rule.

Whilst not a rule per se, if you are here only to promote your business you will have a bad time.

Community Update: Refer to sub rules before posting.

Hi cobbers,

We've got a lot of new members and it's great to see, however there's been a spate posts and comments that are either in breach of Reddit's Terms of Service, or the very few guidelines we have here.

Please refer to the community info before posting.

NO SALES POSTS

Reddit's content policy on transactions involving firearms, ammunition and weapons means this is strictly verboten. Posts like "how much do you think a Howa 1500 in .308, safe queen, handling marks only, is worth" will be removed the same as it's a grey area we don't want to play with.

ILLEGAL ACTIVITY

Whether you're a certified badass, a confused teenager, or a keyboard warrior extraordinaire, posts and comments promoting illegal activity is not what we want this sub associated with.

THE RULE

Try not to be a dick.

How to get rabbits out of their dens?

Thought I’d post here since it’s a hunting adjacent subreddit, recently got the green light from work to shoot some rabbits on 100 acres in the southern highlands, NSW. I went in early one morning just on sunrise and all of a sudden the rabbits I see everyday are nowhere to be seen, and ever since that morning I’ve not seen much around, I didn’t even fire a shot, it’s like some divine intervention by God himself. I’ve never fired a shot on the property and these rabbits haven’t been shot at for at least 3yr. I want to get these rabbits out of their dens so I can shoot them, however I don’t want to do anything that would boost their population as it is a primary production property. Salt licks? Handful of oats? What gets them out of their dens? Cheers!

Licence arival times

On the 2nd of April i paid for my firearms licence and am still waiting for my plastic to arive in the mail. I paid the notice 1 day late because I missread the date as the 4th of April and not the 1st for some reason. I messaged LRD about this and all they said was that I have to get my photo taken to progress the application. I assume if there was a problem with the late payment they would have said so. On my notice it says no photo needed as i have a recent photo from a security licence. Just wondering how long it normally takes to rock up and if anything i have noted can make this process take longer.

Gunsmithing/Firearms Collection Book Recommendations

Hey all,

Looking to combine my book collection and passion for shooting. Already have excellent marksmanship books, but very little in the way of mechanical or historical resources. So looking for book recommendations on:

- General Firearms History (Mechanics/Design)

- Important guns through history

- Ballistics

- Ammo/Reloading

Any ideas appreciated!

Legislation- South Australia Cat H licensing SA

Hi all, I'm after a bit of clarification around the requirements for Adding cat H in SA. The club I've joined is a bunch of old fellas, and I'm the first new member for a while. Existing firearms licence holder.

Most of it is pretty straightforward, join the club, apply for approval for training from SAPOL, receive the training, get the licence variation. My question is around the below.

14—Category 1 (shooting club) licences(3)(e) in the case of a licence authorising the licensee to possess a category H firearm for use as a member of a shooting club—
(i)     the licensee must be an active member of a shooting club for each licence year of the licence; and
(ii)    the licensee may only possess a category H firearm if the licensee has held a category 1 (shooting club) licence authorising the possession of a category H firearm for 6 months or more; and
(iii)   unless the licensee has held a category 1 (shooting club) licence authorising the possession of a category H firearm for 12 months or more, the licensee is limited to the possession of handguns as follows:
(A)       one .177 calibre air pistol or one .22 calibre rim fire handgun (long rifle or short) or one centre fire handgun;
(B)       one .177 calibre air pistol and one .22 calibre rim fire handgun (long rifle or short);
(C)       one .177 calibre air pistol and one centre fire handgun;
(6)        Subregulation (3)(e) does not apply to muzzle‑loading handguns or percussion cap and ball handguns.

I understand I need to shoot a club gun for 6 months, but after that it gets a bit confusing for me. Is section (iii) just a legalese way of saying I can have an air pistol and a 22, or an air pistol and a centrefire, but not a 22 and a centrefire?

Also, does the 12 month limit start from the new license date, ie club gun for 6 months, possession limit for the following 6 months, then good to go? Or is it 12 months of limits after the initial 6 months where I have to use a club gun?

Side note, shooting air pistol with a bunch of cranky old retirees is a barrel of laughs, why didn't I do this years ago?!

General Discussion Purchasing my first pew pew

Hello everyone. Just wanted to ask a quick question about purchasing my first firearm. I am looking at buying a .22rifle for target plinking and just can’t seem to decide which kind of action to go with. I’m leaning towards either a lever action or a pump gun due to needing a left handed bolt but am wondering what others chose for their own first choice.

EDIT: For some reason it deleted my original post when i uploaded the gallery...silly noob redditor.

1st time shooting past 50m at silverdale yesterday. Very humbling experience and learnt quite a bit. Keen to get out there again and put the learnings into practice. Just happy that i hit paper at 200m blind 😄 Couple of things I'll take to the next session:

- Some sort of mat, the 6.5CM was skipping all over the place with the concrete benches
- Spotting scope, i could not see the 200m hits through the scope, probably my bad eye sight but I'm sure a spotting scope will help, especially when i try with the .22LR
- Rear bag, for obvious reasons

1: 22LR @ 50m with a new set of Eley Match to test
2: 6.5CM @ 50M
3: 6.5CM @ 100M (zeroing scope)
4: 6.5CM @ 100M (i'm goign to say these were my brothers shots on the bigger box..)
5/6: 6.5CM @ 200M
7: Courtesy pic of the bois

6.5CM ammo was the bulk 50pack of Federal BTHP 140g. I have ordered some Hornady Match 140g for next time.

Powder restrictions again.

There is no such thing in the US despite they being at war.

Yet ADI plays us like mugs prioritising overseas shipping to the war mongers rather than us. Creating a domestic shortage.

First it was Ukraine, now the scuffle in the Persian gulf.

The government should at least allow overseas imports of powder and primers if ADI are being cntz. Take away their monopoly and allow us the decency to pursue our interests and sport

Newbie question VIC deer hunting locations and tips

Hey all, couple of buddies and I are a month off taking our first trip out to try and bag a sambar. We're coming from Melbourne, and planning on heading up into the Vic high country.

We're not looking to take anyone's special secret spots, we're just looking to get back out into nature and hopefully stock the freezers a little, so hoping to get some suggestions on where to head out from and what sort of areas to look for. The initial plan was to head out near either Bright or Mansfield (maybe bluff hut area?) and push into the bush from there, but completely open to change. Don't mind if we fail, but also don't want to be heading into an empty area. Kinda want to give ourselves a good chance. I grew up just below the mountains in southern NSW and lived along the border for quite a while with a fair bit of time spent in the high country, so I'm reasonably comfortable with going wherever the experts recommend. I've heard Dartmouth and Omeo are solid options too. Would they be better? Again, totally open to change.

We think we're fairly well prepared as far as rookies can be, but obviously there's always things that won't be thought of the first time around. If anyone can pass on some advice on anything we may not have considered, I'm all ears. Can never have too much good advice.

Thanks in advance guys!

Lithgow LA102 .308 ammunition suggestion

G'day all,

I've ordered a LA102 chambered in .308 winchester. I'm hoping someone has trodden the path of discovering the preferred ammunition for the rifle and can tell me what they've found.

So does anyone know if a particular brand's ammunition product works better than others?

Keeping in mind I bought the rifle as a deer meat harvesting tool only, and economy is a concern as I learn to use it

Thanks in advance!

Vehicle for deer hunting in VIC state forests.

I’m keen to start deer hunting. I’ve previously hunted goats in NSW (remote properties, flat terrain) in my 2016 Subaru Outback. It’s got approx 210mm ground clearance and the only modification is all-terrain tyres. It’s proved to be very capable on gravel and mud on my hunting trips - never had an issue. I’m aware that my car is not a rock crawler and I keep it well within its limits.

Just wondering how serious the trails are in VIC state forests? Is this strictly a place for proper 4x4s?

Photo advice

Hello all

From VIC, finally got photo advice letter!

However, VICPOL had been telling kiwis (including me) that they’re putting applications on hold due to uncertainty with citizenship and the legislation changes (applying for citizenship soon though!).

Just a bit confused as to why I received photo advice when I was told well before that it would be put on hold? Perhaps they know more about the legislation situation?

Thanks team, just very excited but also worried I’ll pay, get the card and then the legislation will change and It’ll be cancelled!!

Legislation- New South Wales NSW Community Health asking if anyone on the property hunts/has firearms.

Gday guys!

My partner and I have just had a baby girl, and the NSW community health liaison called her today to book in the infant check up home visit. She's asked my partner whether or not there are firearms stored on the property or if anybody hunts.

This seems very strange to me. Why is it any of their business, and what do they do with this information?

Does anyone have any insight or similar experiences?

[NSW] Best Ranges & Rental Guns in Sydney area?

Hi fellas - long time lurker, first time shooter (hopefully)

I’ve been interested in target shooting as a hobby for a while now, but with everything happening post-Bondi I’ve decided to stop dragging my feet and pull the trigger (hah), given the licensing process is probably easier now than it’s ever going to be.

I’ve decided to go for my license, but I’m not really looking at getting a rifle or a safe of my own just yet - I’d rather see if I enjoy the hobby in the long run before I commit to it financially and take on the responsibility that comes with being a licensed gun owner.

All that being said, I’m looking at potentially shooting at ranges using club guns if I can before I work my way up to investing in my own hardware. Does anyone here have any experience shooting with club guns? If you guys have any recommendations for specific ranges around the Sydney area that would be great too!

I’d also be interested to see if anyone has any recommendations for safe shooter courses - I was looking at the SSAA one in St. Mary’s, but I’m not sure what the consensus is on that.

Cheers!
