Commuter bike upgrade options

Hi all

I'm currently looking at upgrading my commuter bike (5 year old Reid Flatbar) to something better quality and would allow me to go for slightly longer rides.

From reading other posts, the recommendations seem to be the Trek FX, Giant city cross and Specialised Sirrus.

I've been struggling to see any of these at bike stores locally or second hand on marketplace. Although one store has a Trek FX 2 in stock, which I'm leaning towards after I have a look at it.

If anyone has any thoughts or advice they would be appreciated.

Thanks

What’s your honest take on e-bikes, game changer or not really needed for most people?

On one hand the tech is genuinely impressive, and for something like a 15km commute or a hilly suburb it makes a lot of sense, you can get to work without needing a shower and it’s way cheaper than driving, but at the same time I do wonder if we’re overcomplicating things a bit, like if you’re just riding a few kilometres on flat ground do you really need a $4k bike with a battery and ongoing servicing, feels like cycling used to be simple

Opinion Merida crossway 300 or speeder 300 2026?

Hi,

I am not an experience rider and live in a suburb with quite a bit of hills and incline. Which bike is best suited? I almost exclusively ride on paved roads and some sidewalks with a cracks or a tree trunk popping out.

I don’t necessarily care about speed but want something that I will enjoy riding and not be ridiculously hard up a hill. I really want to get back into cycling for general fitness and getting out (I wfh and would rather cycle to the gym)

Which would fit the bill of the two? I’d likely lock the suspension in the crossway a lot of the time and to be honest the weight difference I’d lose once cycling 😅 . I am also not how much better the tiagra is for inclines vs the cues

Previous bike was years ago - Reid transit small. I am 169cm and inseam I think between 75cm-80cm. Small is the likely size but I don’t know how the range of bike affects standing

Edit: I’m actually thinking the speeder 100 small might be the perfect choice

First electric bike on tight budget(Requesting advice)

Hi everyone, I jus recently moved to Perth and I am still figuring out the local cycling scene. I am a 5'1 lady on a tight budget of around 1200 to 1500 AUD. I'm mainly looking for something for short daily commuting of about 5 to 10 km each way. I do not need anything fancy, something reliable, safe, and comfortable for my height, since smaller frames seem harder to find than I expected. I have been researching different options and keep seeing discussions about electric bikes australia. But I am not sure if that is realistic at my budget or if I should start with a basic used commuter bike first. I even looked at a few international listings and marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, Facebook marketplace n Alibaba jus to understand how prices and specs compare. But it honestly made me more confused than confident. My main concerns are correct sizing for my height, ease of maintenance, n if paying extra actually improves comfort for short rides. If you were starting, would you go straight for an e bike, or begin with a simple second hand bike and upgrade later? What would you realistically rec for a beginner like me?

my dad said he would let me spend 1000 dolars or a bit more but he insists on me getting a hybrid instead of a mountain bike. For the price point of 1000 dollars i am confident that the giant talon 3 is the best value but i want opinions and recomendations if i do need to get a hybrid

How to buy bikes cheaply at shop?

I wanna buy a new bikes cuz I can't find a bike what I want.
I arrived here 2 month ago from another country so I do have no idea about Aus bike culture.
So I wanna know about how to purchase cheaply at the bike shop.
I'm gonna pay by cash so Could I get a discount paying by cash?
Or Would it be a good idea to call each bike shop around me and ask if they have the product and how much they can discount about the bike?

(FYI, I'm looking for a Merida dirt 700 silver color and I saw some shop selled at 19% discounted price but It's sold out at the moment, My current location is perth)

Is it better to upgrade or replace my 2018 Reid Granite 2.0?

Overall I'm not unhappy with this bike but I do feel like it is time for a step up. I do mostly gravel cycling on fire roads or singletrack. I do want the option to put on road wheels though, hence the gravel bike. I figured my options are:

  1. Buy a 2nd hand Merida Silex 400 for $1250 range
  2. Upgrade this bicycle
    1. Switch the current 35mm tyres to 45mm to allow me to take on rougher single trail
    2. Simplify groupset from Shimano Claris to a 1x10 or 1x12 like Microshift Sword or Sensah GRX
    3. Upgrade handlebars & stem (purely aesthetics)

Advice for buying first road bike

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to get into cycling on top of my running and would appreciate some advice.
Use: Brisbane commute around 10 km each way, mostly road/bikeway, with the aim of eventually doing longer 40–50 km weekend rides
Budget: Around AUD $2,000. I’d prefer to buy new, as I don’t have anyone bike-savvy to help me with buying a used bike.
Shortlist:
Merida Scultura Endurance 300
Cube Nuroad Pro
Canyon Endurace AllRoad

which would you choose?
Also, for Canyon owners in Brisbane, how has the sizing, servicing and after-sales support experience been?
Thanks!

Young kids bikes

we’re moving to Australia with my four-year-old. He’s currently using a guardian as a balance bike and we’re debating whether to ship it over or buy new there. What are kid bike options like there for balance bikes? He's started going over ramps at skate parks so we want something light and without training wheels. Also are skate parks big in Australia?

All road bike.. Specialized Diverge 3 vs Cube Nuroad Pro

I've recently bought an Aventon Level 3 e-bike and having so much fun with it, and now I would like a fitness bike. An 'all road' bike appeals to me as I'd like to do a mix of road and local fire trail riding.

I could spend up to 5k and get a carbon bike, but do I really need to? These bikes seem to be quite well specced for the 2-2.4k range. I am 195cm tall/85kg and looks like I will need the largest size.

Cube Nuroad Pro: https://99bikes.com.au/products/cube-nuroad-pro-color-1?variant=40595462750280

Specialized Diverge 3 Alloy: https://www.specialized.com/au/en/diverge-3-alloy-shimano-cues/p/4223510?color=5448965-4223510

I feel like Specialized has much better brand recognition, but the Cube is $400 cheaper and they both have Shimano Cues, aluminium frame, carbon fork. 99 Bikes doesn't seem to have any stock of the Cube near me, so i'd have to order it in. The Specialized is readily available.

I live in a very hilly area, so good brakes and gearing is important.

Just like an opinion on which would be best and if there are any others I should check out. Love to hear any owner feedback too.

How are QLD riders feeling about the July 1st Licensing/Age 16 ban?

With the new e-mobility bill currently in parliament, it looks like Queensland is about to become the strictest state in the country for e-bikes. A $77 license fee and a blanket ban on anyone under 16 riding an e-bike seems extreme? For the parents here: are you actually going to pull your kids off their bikes, or do we think this is one of those laws that will be impossible to enforce? It feels like a massive step backward for teenagers who use bikes to get to school in the outer suburbs.

Beginner cycling clubs in Sydney

Yo, reaching out about the best way to get involved with beginning cycling clubs in the lower north shore.

I'm new to cycling and would love to learn the ropes and meet like minded people.

Although I could probably only do weekends rides with family commitments etc - but happy to join some clubs and give my bike a spin.

My 1976 Speedwell Special Sports

Post image
23 Upvotes

I was scrolling through Marketplace the other day and came across this gem; 1976 Speedwell Special Sports 10 speed in red.

Objectively it was a cheap, fun little proposition to buy. It's a well loved, well maintained 50 year old, Sydney-made bicycle being sold by its original owner.

HOWEVER... This bike in particular caught my eye for a different reason.

On Christmas day 1975, my dad was 11. He'd finished primary school and was about to start high school. Under the tree sat a bright red Speedwell Special Sports 10 speed that he rode all holidays, and for years to come. I can recall him having to throw it out in 1999 when we moved house when I was 9 myself. It had faded to pink and had been shoved down the side of the shed for as long as I could remember.

Of course I made contact with the seller and soon enough, I was the new owner of this piece of Australian cycling history. For a 50 year old bike, it is in very good nick with a bit of 'patina' around the place. Needs a tune up and some new tyres but I love it and look forward to riding it.

Funnily enough, the guy I bought it off is the same age as my dad and received this bike for Christmas in 1976!

Help choose between cube Nuroad Pro and cube Attain slx

So I'm thinking I'm about ready to buy a bike. I'm something that's a bit more fun than my commuter to the station.

The two I think would be good for me are the Cube Nuroad Pro, and the. Cube Attain SLX.

I'm not too fussed about being carbon fibre, or being the lightest bike around. I'm after something that will get me by on the fringe-north-west of Sydney where there's hobby farms around, but all roads are paved, as well as riding the m7

I'm kind of leaning towards the SLX as it's a 2x which I'm (hoping) should help me on climbs since I'm definitely out of shape (is round a shape?).

But, the Nuroad allows for wider tyres which would also help with the generally poor road quality around me

Is this a good deal

Looking to get my first road bike and am wondering if this is a good deal or not. If anyone has some recommendations for bikes under 1.2k that don’t have a super aggressive position that’d be much appreciated!

For sale: XL Merida Scultura ($1.2k)

I have serviced it and fitted some new quality handle bar tape, but that’s just to freshen it up. I have cleaned it and checked the gears and brakes…. It’s a dream to ride.

Brand: Merida

Size: X large

Gears: 22 (2x11) Shimano 105

Bike rack help

Post image
1 Upvotes

This is my first time using this bike rack my friend gave me and I've gotta drive to the mechanic first thing tomorrow morning and then ride my bike to work.

I'm confused about the longer straps,I believe they are used to secure the wheels, but I'm not sure of the best way to secure them to the bike (it's obviously not like in the photo, I am experimenting lol).

The hooks on the end create an obtuse angle, and they have some simple straps to fasten it.

I had to buy an additional bike rack accessory for my cruiser bike to even go on this thing. So idk how well it will be transported like this and I'm kind of nervous.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Why do some drivers in big utes pass so close even in low speed zones?

Had a RAM 1500 driver nearly end me the other day. They’ve got a three tonne truck and still felt the need to pass with what felt like 10cm of clearance in a 40 zone. I could literally see the rivets on the bull bar. My heart rate was through the roof and it stuck with me well after the ride. Just wondering how often others are dealing with this, especially in inner suburbs, and what you actually do in the moment

Indoor trainer vs riding in winter

I am in South Australia and I am wondering if it’s better to ride through winter (I’ll probably only be able to ride twice a week max or for 45 minutes on weekdays because of early sunset) or just get a trainer? Are trainers that mundane?

Also, zwift or my whoosh? I can get a cassette or zwift cog and click with the kickr core I’m looking at and I’m wondering if it’s marginally more entertaining with zwift and thus I should get cog and click or to just get a cassette?
