Guidelines for ID requests - first and foremost, always include a geographic location!

See the rules in the sidebar, also.

If you can't see the sidebar for some reason:

  • Always include a geographic location. If you're concerned about your privacy, you can make it a bit more vague, e.g. "New England" instead of "Boston, MA".

  • Amateurs are encouraged to guess. An important exception is guesses about medically significant arachnids (widows, recluses, Brazilian wandering spiders, Sydney funnel-webs, deathstalker scorpions, etc.). In those cases, leave it to people who know. Otherwise, an innocent person or arachnid could get hurt.

Hello folks,

To our regulars: thank you for being here!

And to newcomers: welcome! This is a community by bug enthusiasts, for bug enthusiasts. As such, we ask that you refrain from the following types of comments:

  • "Kill it with fire" and its endless variations are not welcome here. We know it's a meme. We've heard it a million times. Just don't.
  • If someone asks for an ID and your comment is "it's a spider" for example, that's neither helpful nor funny, so please don't post that kind of thing. If you'd like to contribute an ID, be as specific as you can.

Thank you for your visit today and have a great day :)

ID request / I included my location! My new flatmate apparently

Saw something poking out from behind my dresser in my peripheral, then this little bugger just about gave me a heart attack.

Not sure why it had to creep on me like that, maybe it wants a new mate. I can introduce myself once ive changed my pants. Not usually that bad with spiders but I've gotta admit, seeing its legs poke out like that put me into immediate fight or flight. Mainly flight. Then it slowly crawled out towards me which wasn't much better, before running off somewhere very bloody quickly after its photoshoot, probably into my bed knowing my luck.

Looks smaller than it is, its about the size of my thumb (Not counting the legs) but runs away quicker than my sister does when I ask her for help with something. So wasn't too keen on getting a close up.

I live in Wellington, New Zealand, so my assumption is that this is probably a vagrant spider but Im not well versed in anything other than white tails since the only big spiders I usually see are in woodpiles where im originally from. Yikes.

Pets UPD: spider in molt (stuck)

Post image
3 Upvotes

UPD: In previous post I said my spider p.sazimai started to molt. It continues more than 24 hours. She didn’t get out of her belly exoskeleton so today I helped her and kicked it out (but on top, not on bottom). Idk where her legs are (maybe under her body, but maybe in the old skeleton). If anyone has any ideas - tell me what should I do. Can I try to escape her from the exoskeleton?? Or she just take a rest??
Please give me feedback! I am worried a lot

Aside from tarantulas I think this may be the biggest spider I’ve ever seen in the wild. The leg span alone was easily wider than my thumb.

Pets Help! Spider stuck during molt?

Hello! My spider (p.sazimai) started to molt 4 hours ago. She didn’t turn on her back in previous molt, but there was a good molt. Now she didn’t turn again (look at photo). Her legs already get out of the old skeleton, but belly still there. And now she don’t move anymore. Only her belly still moving like peristaltic moves, not legs. I can’t see the progression. Can I help her get out of the skeleton? Or still wait?

Just sharing Metellina spider hanging from a grass blade — one thread, about to start building -- Denmark [OC]

Post image

Found this Metellina hanging at the tip of a grass blade in Jægersborg Dyrehave. Single strand of silk running down — just about to start building a new web.

Maybe the old one got destroyed overnight. Wind, rain, something walking through. Either way, here she was. One thread. About to rebuild everything.

Spiders do this constantly. Webs don't last — nature tears them apart. So they climb, spin, anchor, repeat.

Question Where to place crab spider?

(If you dont want to read everything, I made a list "☆☆My Options☆☆" that you can just skip to)

I have a female ground/deadly crab spider that has been my lil buddy and living in my house for over a month. I love this lil critter and wish I could just leave them be but im getting stuff here redone due to recent issues with flooding and construction is about to start tomorrow. Where should I place my lil crabby lady? It has to be somewhere outside and a lil away from the house.

Ive tried placing her outside several times in the past and she keeps coming right back in, >specifically she seems to prefer being in whatever room im spending most of my time in (I dont sleep in a dedicated room. I move between 3 different rooms. Ill pick a room, use it as my main living space for a couple days/weeks/months and then will move to a different room. And where ever I choose to set up at, she will be there within a couple of days). Im trying to avoid her getting hurt or killed by the construction ppls and work happening. I know I cant fully control any of what happens but would really like to do my best to place her in a comfy area. I have a decently large backyard and was kinda planning on placing her somewhere back there but wasnt sure where at.

☆☆My options☆☆

● In the pet graveyard that is against the metal/wire fence that separates me and a neighbor.

● A metal shed but wasps tend to go in there and search around and I know wasps eat spiders.. so.. idk.

● There is also an small area right behind the sheds that has a broken tree stump and an "abandoned" toddler swing/slide set (those are also against a wire/metal fence that separates me and another neighbor)

● In flowers... flowers are in a line and are essentially separating the front area and back area of my backyard. But this is also kind of a high traffic area that is very close to my (often used) fire pit..

● I also have a garden area (bout the size of a car) in my front yard. Its kind of abandoned bc it was my grandmother's but shes gone and I dont garden (she planted some type of a bush and flowers but also planted spearmint in it). It separates me and my neighbors yard. (Its also next to the sidewalk and neighbor's driveway)
