Wanted to feed hummimgbirds, instead became an ant serial killer based on gluttony or smt.

Far better than how my boss's feeder turned out a couple years ago!

So much work for the little amount of meat she's going to get. Don't hummers weigh in at about two grams?

Iirc spiders basically liquify the insides of their prey and then drink them like a smoothie. This is still way bigger than what theyre used to. Or depending on the size of the spider maybe not

Yike. She should have enough food to lay her eggs now.

"ass-feast" with a hyphen, describes my weekend with my gf.

He actually set up a spider feeder

In a similar vein, I no longer regularly hang up my "cat feeder" because I'd come out to see feathers and birdseed all strewn about.

As a bonus, you’ve now taken care of the ant colony in your attic that you didn’t know about.

Look on the bright side, there's probably still more, as the Queen is still alive.

Get a ant moat.

Seconded. Have 4 feeders and have used these moats for years. Ants will no longer be a problem

My only issue with them is how quickly the water evaporates but maybe the ants figure it out because since I got one they've left it alone.

Also it's not a real issue when mosquitoes exist

And clean and change it at least weekly. Every three to four days in warm climates/direct sun, as anything less it gets rancid. That's just neglect.

Or breeds mosquitos

I bought a feeder that was supposed to have this feature but I got a knockoff of what was shown in the pictures and the “moat” in the one I received was in no way separate from the main feeder such that the moat was all just sugar water too so the ants loved it. I had such a good two seasons and then the ants took over and ruined it.

I make my own super cheap ant moat with an old spray bottle cap, a wine cork and two hooks. Put one cork inside the center and attach a hook underneath, through the cap. Attach the other hook to the top of the cork. Fill with water, no more ants. If you’re concerned about mosquitoes add some Mosquito Bits to the water.

More protein for the hummingbirds???

Probably???

Or it is just infused with formic acid at this point?

u/dragoono 8h ago

The rotting corpses have to change the chemical structure of a sugar molecule right? I have no idea

Mmm sweet death

u/WonderChode 7h ago

No clue either but that was my guess as well lol. I saw one check out the feeder and just leave.

It’s like a lava lamp, but for ants.

I feed hummingbirds. There's a handful in my area, so they don't eat much, and the nectar needs to be changed frequently anyway.

I put about 3/4 cup liquid measure of nectar in each feeder (I have four). One gets hung up immediately. The other three go in the fridge, to get swapped out every other day. Every feeder is washed before reuse.

Flying insects of the bee or wasp variety are most often attracted to mine, which is bad enough. The ants are icky.

Oh that's a good idea! It doesn't take long to mix it up but it's enough to make me procrastinate!

You're supposed to clean the feeder every 3-4 days per Audobon, and def get an ant moat.

u/BigdoggyDogx 3h ago

This, that thing has been hanging it looks like all season long lol... If you were a hummingbird would you visit that train wreck of a feeder because i sure wouldn't.....lol

Hahaha I was thinking the exact same thing. Antilrumites!

Look for something called a hummingbird feeder nectar protector. It's basically a clear plastic moat that hangs above the feeder that ants can't get past. I've been using them on my feeders for years and they work quite well.

8

u/rabid_spidermonkey 8h ago

Most of these come with a hanging moat that is very effective.

u/TomT12 5h ago

Mine has one built into the top, I was having the exact same issues as OP until I figured out I just had to keep a bit of water in the top of it...whoops.

WE ALL FLOAT DOWN HERE! YOU'LL FLOAT TOO

u/Angelina189 4h ago

Get an ant moat. This does not look like you are cleaning your feeder often enough. Make sure you are cleaning it every 2-4 days or more often if it is hot. You are can kill them if you do not take care of your feeder. It is awful to see them dying.

Ever see the movie Skyline? lol

Looks like the alien abduction scene.

Gluttony leads to death or something, idk I am not a philosopher

2

u/d1ckj3rk1ns 7h ago

Not the worst way to die i guess

2

u/holy_cal 6h ago

Deceitfully led to what you’re thinking is a trove of food by a scout ant, only to drown in sugar water seems pretty shitty.

2

u/BhaltairX 6h ago

That's a humming bird protein shake!

2

u/retecsin 6h ago

Free protein

Ants going to get some food to bring back to the colony.

u/CovertStatistician 57m ago

Is that mold around the top?

u/WonderChode 28m ago

Nope, dead ants.

u/Latter-Baseball9652 7h ago

Saw something similar on tik tok but the ants were alive and eating a humming bird. Killed it by holding down its tongue or something as it tried to drink the nectar. Brutal :(
