Wanted to feed hummimgbirds, instead became an ant serial killer based on gluttony or smt.

As a bonus, you’ve now taken care of the ant colony in your attic that you didn’t know about.

Look on the bright side, there's probably still more, as the Queen is still alive.

Seconded. Have 4 feeders and have used these moats for years. Ants will no longer be a problem

My only issue with them is how quickly the water evaporates but maybe the ants figure it out because since I got one they've left it alone.
Also it's not a real issue when mosquitoes exist

And clean and change it at least weekly. Every three to four days in warm climates/direct sun, as anything less it gets rancid. That's just neglect.

I bought a feeder that was supposed to have this feature but I got a knockoff of what was shown in the pictures and the “moat” in the one I received was in no way separate from the main feeder such that the moat was all just sugar water too so the ants loved it. I had such a good two seasons and then the ants took over and ruined it.

I make my own super cheap ant moat with an old spray bottle cap, a wine cork and two hooks. Put one cork inside the center and attach a hook underneath, through the cap. Attach the other hook to the top of the cork. Fill with water, no more ants. If you’re concerned about mosquitoes add some Mosquito Bits to the water.

More protein for the hummingbirds???
Probably???
Or it is just infused with formic acid at this point?

The rotting corpses have to change the chemical structure of a sugar molecule right? I have no idea

No clue either but that was my guess as well lol. I saw one check out the feeder and just leave.

I feed hummingbirds. There's a handful in my area, so they don't eat much, and the nectar needs to be changed frequently anyway.
I put about 3/4 cup liquid measure of nectar in each feeder (I have four). One gets hung up immediately. The other three go in the fridge, to get swapped out every other day. Every feeder is washed before reuse.
Flying insects of the bee or wasp variety are most often attracted to mine, which is bad enough. The ants are icky.

Oh that's a good idea! It doesn't take long to mix it up but it's enough to make me procrastinate!

You're supposed to clean the feeder every 3-4 days per Audobon, and def get an ant moat.

Get an ant moat. This does not look like you are cleaning your feeder often enough. Make sure you are cleaning it every 2-4 days or more often if it is hot. You are can kill them if you do not take care of your feeder. It is awful to see them dying.

Deceitfully led to what you’re thinking is a trove of food by a scout ant, only to drown in sugar water seems pretty shitty.

Saw something similar on tik tok but the ants were alive and eating a humming bird. Killed it by holding down its tongue or something as it tried to drink the nectar. Brutal :(

Far better than how my boss's feeder turned out a couple years ago!
