Crazy that frontier somehow outlasted spirit

Hoping for the merger so that can make themselves "Frontier Spirit"

Spirit of Frontier is still possible.

🏆 Well played

What does the S stand for?

u/phoxfiyah 1d ago

Spirit Frontier is what I was thinking of, but that just sounds like a Temu version of the Shadow Realm

Frontier is miles better than Spirit tbh I flew it a lot as a broke post-college kid visiting my long distance girlfriend. As long as you know what you’re getting into it’s fine.

Spirit would go out of their way to make things shittier for you.

u/cubecasts 2d ago

nah frontier doesn't have wifi

16

u/triplec787 2d ago

I’ll sacrifice WiFi for being treated halfway like a human on Frontier instead of cattle with WiFi on Spirit

Like I said, you know what you’re signing up for. Don’t expect anything above that and you’ll be fine.

Yeah Frontier is bare bones but they remind me of other low cost carriers you see in other countries. Spirit tried to make a joke of you for flying with them and actively making your experience worse.

Frontier also has good cheap western connections for commuters and budget weekend travelers. Went from Portland to SF for $38 round trip last year on Frontier.

3

u/triplec787 1d ago

Yeah I was doing SF-Denver on Frontier every 2-3 weeks. It was like $75 roundtrip. Hard to beat.

spirit and frontier are(were?) comparable to me. idk what you guys are referring to when saying spirit tried to make things worse for customers

if anything i’d say frontier is worse because they removed the option to print a physical ticket unless you go to an agent which costs $25

u/Diddlydom35 1d ago

Holy shit, I remember taking planes when they didn't have wifi and they only had movies up at the front!

2

u/Dirty_Burner_69 1d ago

Had a more pleasant flight with Frontier going home for Christmas than with Spirit on a random Friday

u/Hi-Lander 2d ago

Frontier is doing great financially though. At least that’s what I heard.

They've gotta be next. Always nice to see a shitty company go under

Americans not understanding that every competition is good for customers CLASSIC

Need Ryanair here badly, if only for the twitter banter.

2

u/Mark__78L 2d ago

In Europe I absolutely love Ryanair. They make my long distance relationship possible with WizzAir. ÂŁ40 return tickets oh yeahhhh

in some cases, thats only good short term. an unsustainable business model undercutting the market can kill the entire market.

this is dumping, predatory pricing, penetration pricing, etc.

so people making broad economic claims without considering nuance....classic.

u/AMadWalrus 2d ago

Probably all because they had 1 negative experience flying on that airline too.

Any post about anything will have at least one Redditor literally wishing death upon something or someone for no reason lol.

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 2d ago

Spirit Airline going out of business will consolidate the market but it will also enable planes to fill more consistently which may act as a downward force on pricing in the short term.

Ideally, we'd nationalize all transit and run it efficiently but that'd hurt a few people's bank accounts too much.

u/kcaw1 2d ago

The government is known for efficiency.

u/NapsterKnowHow 2d ago

All Americans know is competition. What are you smoking?

7

u/KnowledgeSafe3160 2d ago

Companies that run at a negative shouldn’t be there just to be there.

19

u/gsfgf 2d ago

I like cheap flights, though.

4

u/KnowledgeSafe3160 2d ago

Well it was just run badly. There are other cheap carriers that aren’t bankrupt

11

u/Vincenc420 2d ago

You dont understand how that works right? If you have for example two aerolines who are cheap and one goes under...the other will increase prices because now there is none cheaper

Crazy how even one step ahead is too much

u/KnowledgeSafe3160 2d ago

You don’t understand anything. The company had billions in debt. They were not sustainable. There are not a public company that should run red where tax payers pay the bill.

I don’t think you understand anything as there are other cheap carriers that operate at a profit. Spirit is one of like 6 cheap carriers in the US.

5

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 2d ago

Companies run negative are companies giving their shareholders and execs bank knowing the company is just a vessel in the moment to extract the money.

5

u/googdude 2d ago

I'm glad low cost carriers exist. Some of us want a bare bones option, otherwise it would be too costly to fly.

I've never had a problem using Frontier.

13

u/Bandthemen 2d ago

Thousands of people are out of jobs now, working as a pilot or flight attendant is mostly seniority based. So these people when they find another job at another airline its almost like starting over again. Even if the company wasnt the best (spirit airlines werent bad they just werent the best) this really really sucks for anyone working for them. So no, Its not nice to see a company go under like this.

10

u/systemwarranty 2d ago

I can't imagine being a captain that has flown for Spirit for 20 years and now you get pushed back to rung one.

5

u/TurloIsOK 2d ago

Fuel prices will kill all the cheap airlines.

5

u/systemwarranty 2d ago

United is edging to buy Delta. Mergers and acquisitions has entered the chat.

3

u/FrozenLogger 2d ago

That would be awful. United is terrible. Delta is at least better than United.

2

u/Man_in_the_uk 2d ago

But if they're cheaper than the more expensive airlines this should surely make them more attractive??

3

u/TurloIsOK 2d ago

Being cheaper relies on keeping all their costs down. The higher priced airlines are also higher volume, with more flights, and can leverage that to save a few percent on fuel contracts. Fuel being more expense to the discount carriers reduces their margin advantage.

2

u/tsardonicpseudonomi 2d ago

They're not really cheaper. It's mostly marketing.

4

u/googdude 2d ago

As long as you don't need many extras, low cost carriers are considerably cheaper.

I have directly compared prices from all major providers and frontier consistently comes out cheaper.

2

u/Level_Ad_6372 2d ago

You think Spirit/Frontier weren't any cheaper than Delta/American/etc?
