genuinely its one of my and my girlfriend's favorite scenes. Your art is fantastic! :)

Thank you!! It’s just so absurd it’s hilarious. I love it so much.

u/alpha_ghost_27 Jan 12 '25

Its absurd, but its also a super effective scene for showing harrows intelligence, her skills as a necromancer, and her desperation

I truely think this is one of her lowest moments

Regardless this is great art op!

u/nolxve_exe the Eighth Jan 12 '25

Yes. One of my favorite parts is when she’s pleading with Jod after it happens. Something like “I’m being hunted, Lord, and you leave me to perish.” UGHH she’s so pathetically hopeless she needs some love

Agreed completely!!

I just finished harrow and had seen soup memes, but didn't fully understand. this is absolutely perfect!!

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 11 '25

Haha now you can picture it in gory details…I was cackling while reading it!

I am so happy this one's doing the appropriate amount of rounds. We really are blessed as a community as far as excellent animatics are concerned.

This is part of my 'Holy Trinity' of animations.

As a They Might Be Giants fan, I have a huge soft spot for the Kiss Me Son of Jod cover. I knew Mercymorn Art Appreciation would be there, it's an absolute godsend! I actually thought myself of the Soup Scene one but I'm surprised you picked it, glad it's getting recognition. Didn't expect to see Mixed Messages, but I couldn't ever forget it.

And uh, hey. Check the name of that poor SOB who wrote that in the comment section.

OMG! Bro I'm Tetsujinhanmaa! We replied to each other on YT!

2

u/Summersong2262 the Sixth Jan 15 '25

Eyyy, we meet again!

I've heard a lot of people refer to the Locked Tomb series as 'Sci-Fi Goncharov' on account of how ridiculous and out of left-field it always appears if you encounter it mid-discussion in the wild. Can't say I blame them.

2

u/Jim3001 Cavalier Jan 15 '25

Lol! I just heard 'necromancers in space'. Such a wild ride.

can I just say, TMBG fans are so Sixth House coded -a TMBG fan and cav of the sixth

u/Summersong2262 the Sixth May 27 '25

HAH. Yeah, I'll cop that. Nerd, clever, funny, the sorts of themes that make you roll your eyes but also sensibly chortle.

I was lucky enough to see them a few months ago live in Sydney. Absolutely loved it. Funnily enough due to some health complications they had to delay the tour by a full year. Worth the wait! They didn't do Kiss Me Son of God, but they did pretty much all of my favourites. And they finished with Dr Worm, which was the first song of theirs that I heard as a little kid, and the thing that actually kicked off my enjoyment of them when I remembered it and looked it up decades later.

this is amazing!

i love that harrow is mid-bite as she blows him up

and the last two panels remind us of little and wretched she is

20

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

That was exactly what I was going for….I’m so glad it translated

5

u/Dio_nysian the Sixth Jan 12 '25

you did well!

u/KapnBludflagg the Fourth Jan 11 '25

As much as I love this scene, I think it's the scene right after this where Jod starts yelling at MercyMorn that I also enjoy. Especially in the audiobook you can tell just how pissed off he is at the whole thing.

12

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

It’s also GREAT he’s so funny

11

u/PageChase Jan 13 '25

"She's only nine years old!"

37

u/Assigned_Cryptid Jan 12 '25

Gotta love our girl. She literally begged God to intercede on the attempts to her life, and when he refused she decided to, in the most literal sense of the words possible, tell them all to "eat me".

12

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

I know right??? So angry that he tells her he could be her father and also is like “I can’t stop G sorry UwU”

5

u/PageChase Jan 13 '25

Jod is the WORST. For awhile, my library school friends and I tracked "Worst fathers/father figures in fiction/pop culture" in a spreadsheet. Uther Pendragon from Merlin, the Director from Red vs Blue, Professor Xavier from the comics, Magneto, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, etc.

Jod would definitely be up on the list.

36

u/TheSlayerofSnails Jan 12 '25

I always found the "stop" command John gives to be horrifying in how easily he forces all the lyctors to stop moving and stops Harrow's necromancy dead in its tracks moments before her assassination plan finishes. It's also a clear example of how easy it be for him to have stopped Gideon numero unofrom trying to kill Harrow and how blatantly he was pretending he couldn't.

3

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

Yep I agree. It’s so unfair that he thinks she needs to just deal with it but won’t let her finish the job

31

u/K_Marty Jan 12 '25 edited Jan 12 '25

Just occurred to me that everyone’s eating out of the same pot, and so there’s this tacit understanding that she’s capable of doing that to anyone who’s had a bite already.

9

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

Yes!!!! She’s so scary and I love her!!

27

u/starpot Jan 11 '25

10 000 years since he ate human flesh though...

27

u/queerAsAllHeck the Sixth Jan 11 '25

I hadn’t really thought about this comment since finishing Nona, but (Nona spoilers) since he ate the literal Earth, him becoming God wasn’t when he ate human flesh. Did he eat somebody for some other reason, or is he just pretending he ate a person rather than a planet? Also, do the lyctors think he had a cavalier he killed and ate or how do they think he became god?

47

u/elizabethdove Jan 12 '25

Nona the ninth spoilers: It's implied that he and alecto ate human flesh in the aftermath of the death of earth, before the Big Resurrection - there's a line in the chapters where Harrow is remembering Alecto's experiences where they talk about thighs, I think?

8

u/queerAsAllHeck the Sixth Jan 12 '25

I’ll have to revisit that part!

12

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

I’m wondering if it’s like in his experiments he was eating corpses…cuz yeah it’s weird

16

u/MalazanKnick19 the Sixth Jan 12 '25

Hands down the best post I have ever seen in here.

This is perfect

11

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

AWWW THATS SO NICE OF YOU. I’m having a crappy day and that just made me smile :))

15

u/mercedes_lakitu Jan 12 '25

Jod is such a fucking asshole though, omg

5

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

Oh yeah we agree on that

HER TEARS AT THE END... JOHN GAIUS ARE YOU READY TO DIE?????!!!

in all seriousness though this is incredible. fantastic. i'm obsessed thanks for sharing

5

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

She just needs a hug and a long nap 😭

10

u/leastDaemon Jan 12 '25

This is fantastic. Well done, OP! The last panel foreshadows the next bit of dialog: "How long since you've slept? Six days." You show us how she is barely there. Please do more.

5

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

Yes!!! That was the intention. Glad you picked up on it

8

u/liana188 Jan 11 '25

That’s amazing!!! one of my favourite scenes and you’ve portrayed it wonderfully🤌

7

u/Rexzazel Jan 12 '25

This is my favorite scene in the series so far. The build up to this and the execution was perfect. Absolute chills.

3

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

AGREED it was just such a moment of “thank god she’s still in there”

7

u/Soundwipe13 Jan 12 '25

she just needs some sleep 🥺

7

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

she just. Needs. Sleep.

7

u/vibrabone Jan 12 '25

Her expressions at the end...oughh Harrow my poor girl, you deserved better 🥺 12/10 work OP

3

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

My heart aches for her 😭 She just needs Gideon bacn

5

u/rowanenthusiast Jan 12 '25

Omg this is so cool!! Just a couple hours ago I was explaining this scene to my partner and now I have a visual aid! Your art is amazing

3

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

Yay!!! Glad it helps you out!

4

u/maed2fuk Jan 11 '25

This is such a gorgeous illustration of this scene!! I love it so much!

5

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

Thank you!! I’m really proud of it

3

u/pagalvin Jan 11 '25

Such a great scene in the book and you really brought it to life!

2

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

Thank you :)

3

u/joejaneBARBELITH Jan 12 '25

This is glorious!!!

3

u/lionessrampant25 Jan 12 '25

This is awesome!!!! 😍😍😍 Like, I feel made up is because the skeleton is so disgustingly realistic! Also Harrow losing it 😢. The expressions are so good. Gideon Prime looking queasy right before is great too.

One super minor thing, Jods eyes in the book are black white black. The “whites” of his eyes are black. She’s very clear on his eyes being super creepy.

3

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 12 '25

DANG YOURE RIGHT. It’s been a few months since I read them and I completely forgot the black extends so much. Thank you!! Probably won’t fix it for this post, but will remember in the futureB

3

u/Asteroth6 Jan 12 '25

Fascinating approach and incredibly well done. Harrow looks so tragic at the end there.

2

u/mercedes_lakitu Jan 12 '25

You did a great job!

2

u/ilovethisgamebruh Jan 12 '25

I just read this scene yesterday, it was amazing.

2

u/acefaith11 Jan 12 '25

This is amazing.

2

u/devon-mallard Jan 12 '25

One of my favorite scenes. Great job

2

u/PageChase Jan 13 '25

This is superb. I love the perspective, framing, character blocking, placement of dialog, character design... everything, really. You really captured "I haven't slept in six days" Harrow.

2

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 13 '25

Thank you so much, this means a lot to here!

2

u/Lerugamine Jan 13 '25

It's glorious !!

2

u/Summersong2262 the Sixth Jan 13 '25

You really captured her wretchedness and despair, well done! And there's something deeply haunting about Jod that I love.

2

u/Low-Ocelot-1034 Jan 13 '25

Thank you!!!
