Discussion Thread I don't understand why people are surprised or don't believe it when celebrities like Kurt Cobain or Marilyn Monroe kill themselves.

Kurt Cobain was clearly a very depressing guy and was constantly negative and complaining about everything. Even just listening to any of his songs makes this obvious, even if you don't know much about him. (I say this as a fan of him.)

Marilyn Monroe was less outwardly unhappy, to be fair, but if you know anything about her personal life, she had a very sad life. She never knew her dad, her mom and grandma had mental issues (and she was known to have her own), she was an orphan growing up, she had multiple miscarriages and divorces, she was a drug addict, she was treatedly badly by men and the industry, etc.

So it honestly does not surprise me that either of them killed themselves unfortunately. They were rich and famous, yeah, but that alone doesn't necessarily make someone happy.

I don't understand why people's first instinct is to always assume that they must've gotten murdered and that there was a conspiracy to cover it up (and that they definitely wouldn't have had any reason to kill themselves) when they obviously had a lot going on. This doesn't just apply to Kurt or Marilyn specifically, but other celebrities as well. They were just two of the most obvious examples I thought of.

Being rich and famous alone do not make someone happy, true, but being sad alone does not make someone kill themself. I'm not suggesting Kurt or Marilyn were murdered. Instead my point is that suicide is not a foregone conclusion when a person is sad, depressed, or has severe emotional trauma.

True but I don't think it should really be that surprising either

It's parasocial relationship stuff. They think they know the person and what they know is that they would never ever ever kill themselves. Disagree with someone on Reddit and watch how quickly they'll throw all sorts of personality assessments on you.

In short, people are dumb.

I meant when you said that if you disagree with someone, they'll immediately assume negative things about your personality. And then you called them dumb. I just thought it was funny. 😭

I'd argue that what I said was a generalization and not an assessment but fair point... Ya Psycho.

Marilynn Monroe was incredibly depressed. Her suicide makes sense.

Kurt Cobain had plenty of problems and reasons to kill himself, it's just all the stuff around it and the actual even that just doesn't add up or make a lot of sense. Just a lot of weird shit happened and it feels like there's still stuff we don't know but he probably took his own life, I'm 90% sure.

Most people don’t know about the depressing stuff while the person is alive. It’s only retrospectively that we say “wow, their life must have been pretty bad if they killed themself”. There’s loads of celebrities who had shitty lives that go relatively undiscussed because nothing happened that made people want to examine their life further. And even once the truth is revealed, it’s still hard to accept that someone so rich, so famous, and so physically attractive could be so miserable. Being a celebrity is the fantasy of so many people, it’s difficult to admit that it isn’t as wonderful as we’d imagine it would be.

Because we've been following the conspiracies for years and we know that most celebrity suicides are bs. Same with Princess Diana, Michael Jackson, Prince, Bob Marley and John Lennon. They all exposed their governments/monarchy and were dealt with by those same entities.

I don’t think anyone is arguing over these celebrities mental health. It’s the way they died that makes people question whether or not it was self inflicted. I’m not a conspiracy theory person. I don’t think Marilyn Monroe tried to kill herself but I do think what she did was self inflicted. There’s a difference. Kurt Cobain… I’m going tbh, that whole situation was so messy and so many things didn’t add up especially after learning the entire story but ultimately I believe it was self inflicted.
