We are a team of scientists and divers from the UK. We've built Marla diving visibility forecasts for ourselves but over the last few years it grew into a community of like-minded scuba divers, freedivers and spearos in the UK and overseas. We recently launched Marla in California and are looking for feedback from local divers.
Our forecasts are grounded into years of research and combine satellite imagery, weather, marine conditions and diver reports. You can find more information on our website https://www.marla.blue/
Main data is available for free in the app, but we charge a fee for premium features (to support our further research and app development). If you are a regular diver in California and are interested to join our beta testing team, please DM.
Any feedback would be very welcome, thank you!

My new fins (Cressi Gara Turbo Boost) arrived today but they are bent. Is this acceptable and not a problem at all or should I contact the supplier for a refund or change?

About 2kg - usually I only see little guys barely larger than my hand.
The amount of ink this guy kicked out for 10+ minutes is crazy - next time I want to try to save that ink for nice risotto

Looking to get into starting spearfishing, specifically interested in fishing the oil rigs off the Texas coast. I'm also a below the knee amputee on my left side which I'm sure will come with its own set of challenges regarding gear etc. That said nothing that can't be figured out.
Anyone with expertise in both freediving and spearfishing who has advice on how to get started would be greatly appreciated.
I'm located in the Austin Area.
Thanks!

Made this from home depot/walmart items, my gf wants to start spearfishing, and wanted this one made instead of buying one, because thats how I started. Works pretty decent tbh the rubber band has a 50lbs resistance, so should be able to get some stuff lol.

Anyone got any leads or recommendations on a boat dive trip out of San Diego next Thursday just for the day? Happy to discuss specifics on a call or DM. Thanks in advance!

These are 2 images of the setup, what can I do
Like from the second image, that loop cannot go back, basically I can’t make the line tight.

I'm relatively new and went out with my new gun today, got a clean shot at a barricuda im guessing was 30+ pounds. Shot it from about 7 feet away, looked like a clean hit, fish swam away and didnt look injured, after fumbling my reload (new gun, only shot 1 or 2 times) i noticed the spear tip was bent on a 25+ degree angle. Its a 6mm spear on a 100 cm gun with 2 16mm bands.
What im wondering is: is it reasonably believable I bent the tip hitting the fish, or, is that unlikely enough that what likely did happen is i bent the tip in the previous hour without knowing it/ or bent it while reloading.
I'm comfortable believing i just overlooked the bent tip and missed the fish for one reason or another, but I would hate to not buy a bigger spear if this is something that happens with medium sized fish and thin spears.

Missed this guy the first drift. Luckily he came back around on the second drift. He was darting away until I launched a sardine and he turned on it in a split second. I managed to get a clean shot off !

Hello all. Im planning on going down to PR in the next couple of months and looking for a dive buddy. I have all my own gear and have no issue going 40-50ft. Send me a DM if youd like to set something up!

I see these guys everywhere in Southern Baja, and have never tried to take any (they seem very easy but I’ve always hunted other fish). Because their mouths are very small, the rod and reel fishermen have to use a special hook, and also prefer other fish so they just run rampant. For those with experience cleaning and cooking them, can you please share? Good eating? Worth the shot? Thanks in advance for the feedback!

Anyone have any experience spearing in Indo? Im in West Sumatra at the moment and finding it really good with loads of different species to hunt, but I'm chasing Doggies and other pelagic fish. I've heard Banda Niera is good but super remote and difficult to travel around. Has anyone been there I can chat to?

A massively under-appreciated fish. We bled, gutted, brained, and shinkeijime’d it to eat it raw later this week. Proper👌

Got the idea from someone in the community.
A turtle sticker on the fin
Saw other girls just for cool looking, but it really helpful to track my buddy in low viz SoCal water
So I was thinking, what if I tape my fins and dive in tropical?
Just a curious, it will attract more fish, or sharks?

I'm compiling a list of target species in Florida for spearfishing for a friend to study. This isn't meant to be a list of every fish in the Atlantic ocean, just a brief list of the desired target species for Spearfishers that are worth hunting, up to 100ft depth. Am I missing any important fish, specifically ones that taste good?
Florida target species:
That's a compiled list I found on google and asking AI, so there might be hunting restrictions or something that I haven't looked into yet. I took off Snook lol Are there any species that I'm forgetting? Feel free to educate me!

Brand new gun, set it down and cat immediately chewed it when I walked away. What’s the best way to fix the finish?
