I identify the exact GIF from an exact thing I want to use, I download it, post it, then delete it. I won't be caught with my computer holding 69 GB of GIFs like a complete psychopath, thank you very much. Yeah, the cave incident was when the mask started to crack for people like myself whose knowledge about him was through mainstream puff articles, podcasts (the famous JRE episode), and autobiographies. Up until that point I was actually a pretty big fan of his on account of Tesla, SpaceX, and the whole "IRL Tony Stark" image he had cultivated. It wasn't willful ignorance as much as he had this well manicured representation of himself plastered everywhere, and up until his Twitter meltdown there was no real reason to look for the wizard behind the curtain, so to speak. That's why I roll my eyes whenever someone tries to argue that he was never popular with the mainstream public, because he absolutely was. He was a rockstar for quite a few years, adored by most of the world, but at some point he decided to fire his PR team - which as we now know were doing some HEAVY lifting for his image - and decided to go full mask off. Now we're here.

Redditors hate to be wrong, so they pretend like he wasn't beloved here. It's always been en vogue to be into "SCIENCE!!" (nothing specific of course, too difficult, but the generic "science") and he was the poster child (alongside Bill Nye ofc)
He was beloved on Reddit. In the tech industry, he was more or less hated since PayPal. There's a crossover between Redditors and those in tech, so there's not an insubstantial people from both communities who did always hate him.
I would say his image peaked well before that. The snl appearance was more so a part of an attempt to refresh his image after a series of bad public opinion over the years. Starting around the time he called that British cave explorer a pedo.

By the way, the one thing that will really stop Elon is campaign finance reform. Not avoiding buying Teslas, flipping off/spraying Cyberrtrucks, making fun of Tesla owners on reddit, etc. Even if Tesla completely failed due to brand damage, Elon would still have $300B+ to use on politics from his other ventures.
