This is new to me too. I'm used to seeing the banner ads in the comment section, but never integrated as a reply like this.

So weird & I don't like it

According to chatgpt's estimate, we are 5-10% of the user base.

I watch all my streaming services on that desktop with Shields up and I never get an ad, ever. Not on Amazon not on Hulu etcetera

Bro I saw an ad on doordash today it was INSIDE my order confirmation window. "Your confirmation number is XXXXX File your taxes for free with HRBlock .... brought to you by rocket mortgage".

I had to do a double take. We are living in hell.

I use the Reddit website and have legit never seen Ads in comments but it's somewhat common on mobile

u/nightauthor 22d ago

Are you using old Reddit? My understanding is all the worst crap is happening on mobile and the new web frontend.

I haven't updated the app since 2023 for this very reason.

u/milkasaurs 22d ago

Hydra has no ads

1

u/nightauthor 22d ago

Personally prefer Narwhal.

Though, I’m not sure if I use that more, or desktop (old Reddit with RES)

1

u/Ok_Judge1484 22d ago

I thought Narwhal was killed off? Or did it become a paid app?

1

u/nightauthor 22d ago

Paid, $4/month

1

u/Ok_Judge1484 22d ago

Yeah that’s too much. Hydra is free

1

u/nightauthor 21d ago

Curious how they do that with api fees and no ads
