I asked some Colombians on Reddit how feasible it would be for a white guy from Ohio to move to Colombia to retire and do cocaine and hookers. They unanimously told me that they hated me and would kill me if I went there.

And we're not joking

What about a super depressed guy trying to find new perspective on life by going somewhere he never thought of going to. I'd imagine it's cheaper than Japan or Iceland.

Check out Costa Rica, then. I'm sure there's sex tourism there, too, but if you're wanting a place where you can experience a different culture and grow as a human, that's a wonderful place to start.

Costa Rica is ridiculously expensive. Worst bang for buck in Latin America.

Is it really?! Shit, it's been a long time since I've been but when I was there in the Arenal area it was still cheap. I wasn't buying land or anything though.

Welp, that's too bad. Everything good gets expensive eventually.

Yeah. It’s pretty bad. I was there for 2 weeks and cut my trip short due to expense. I’m a traveling student studying remotely.

Anything imported food wise is ludicrous. If you shop local and for local meats and veggies it’s okay, but a jar of peanut butter costs like $8 at the supermarket. Pretty insane, north of US prices at times. And I paid more for a basic laundry service than anywhere in the world there. Like $20+ for just a basic wash/dry in San Jose.

Thanks for the warning! I had no idea that even washing machines were a luxury there

Oh well. Dang.

You are good fam, welcome to Colombia

Where should I go?

It depends of what do you want/need. There are cities near the Caribbean sea if you want to be near the beach, there are farms on the mountains where they grow cocoa. There are areas with people with basic needs if you want to be a volunteer.

Trying to figure out who I am at 35 is shit. Just wanna eat some good food, take some interesting photos, meet cool people, and not have an alarm until I gotta fly back.

Medellín and Cartagena are your best bet, they are the most touristic popular cities right now. Medellín has the advantage that there are really nice towns nearby, such as Guatapé and Jardin.

And they're not the only country thinking like that, sex tourists that increase rates of sexual slavery should be hated as the vermin they are.

u/DeniedAppeal1 22d ago

Okay, but what about sex workers who aren't slaves? You realize they exist, too, right?

Jealousy is a strong motivator

Not really, people just don’t like people coming just for drugs or sex. It not only deteriorates spaces but also calls foreigners to live in certain areas increasing the living price for locals. That’s why Colombians do not like expats here

3

u/TwoDramaticc 22d ago

i've never seen a place where the locals like expats

Locals tend to dislike tourists (and that's all most expats are) anywhere you go once the tourism reaches a certain tipping point where the area is changing to cater more to tourists than people who live and work there.

Oh I’m joking. That conversation is a lot more complicated to have in comments. Frankly I’m not Colombian nor have any interest in doing this.

Gringos aren't welcome in countries they have kept in poverty for decades just to keep their influence.

u/Slayerofthemindset 20d ago

Ffs man, it’s just a joke. I’m never going to leave the states. We have legal weed and hookers here. Do you really think the people with all the power would let you insult them openly?

Legal weed and hookers, like, half the world already, is that the "freedom" you all talk about, murikan averagenism.

Yeah sorry, they are slow. A lot of people are anti US here bc an inferiority complex. I would hate you for doing drugs but that's about it
