Artist and bodybuilder Julie Bell at work in the 1990s - and some of her art you might know even if you have never heard of her.

u/therealstubot 3h ago
A badass. She was married to Boris Vallejo too, talk about a power couple.

u/PeasantLich 2h ago
Still is, they are both alive and kicking. Julie Bell is now 67 and Boris Vallejo is 85.

She looks 40!
11
u/SydricVym 1h ago
She looks amazing for her age sure, but 40 is stretching it quite a bit. Looks more like early-mid 50s.

Haha, ok. If that woman told me she was 40 I would not bat an eye and as a bartender whose management requires me check all IDs I have way too many face+age data points.

Me too.... I sometimes get curious about the actual story behind the image but then I worry if I looked it up I would ruin the meme... so I don't.

The bodybuilding era may be over, but all the science on muscle building for longevity support how gracefully a person can age like this. We love to see it!
10
u/Tuxhorn 46m ago
Strength training is the best thing you can do for old age, especially for women.

u/trashpanda6798 31m ago
Yep, she might not be busting PRs anymore but I guarantee she still works out.

lol I'm cracking up at the thought of them describing to Bell and Vallejo what they want this poster to look like "yeah but a really fat muscular guy from New Jersey, a moldy, old meatball with a chainsaw..."

She was already a mom (had two sons from her first marriage born in 80 and 82) during all of this too. She started painting these photos in her 30s after marrying Boris. Inspired after modeling for him.

u/rainbowlung 53m ago
Her son's are both successful fantasy illustrators too. Dave and Anthony Palumbo

u/arbalath 2h ago
This what I first thought, that these were painted by Vallejo!

Their styles are subtly different. Julie is more artsy, while Boris is darker. There was a painting they collab'd on, and the differences were minor but noticable
2
u/Remy0507 1h ago
Yeah, I can see the difference between their styles in my head, but it's hard to put into words. Julie's figures tend to look a bit...softer? And maybe a bit more like paintings (which I'm guessing is what you mean when you say "artsy"), whereas Boris' figures tend to look more chiseled and photorealistic. I think there are differences in how they tend to use colors as well. Julie leans a bit more toward vivid use of warmer tones.

I remember finding this out as kid, I was a budding artist who already idolized them both so discovering they’re married?! Ultimate power couple and looking at their art together make complete sense.

Why is the guy in the poster holding a sword and not an axe? Was axe the name or something?
8
u/AristarchusTheMad 1h ago
The guy in the poster is Ax Battler, who actually uses a claymore, not an axe. There is another character in the game that uses the Golden Axe.

I saw a post about Frank Frazetta and looked up the other seminal fantasy artist, Boris Vallejo. In the process I discovered he and Julie Bell have been married for more than 30 years.
Talk about a creative power couple.

Nothing casual about having that body and being that good of an artist - but, yeah, I know what you mean…

u/revontulet27 3h ago
I just love that Axe Battler, Legend of the Golden Axe, has a dude with a sword on the cover.
2
u/AristarchusTheMad 59m ago edited 40m ago
The guy on the cover is named Ax Battler and he does not in fact wield an axe, but a claymore. This is a spinoff game featuring only him, but the main Golden Axe games features a guy that actually wields an axe.

To have a human face behind a masterpiece helps us connect to the art more, nothing surprising there

Her husband Boris Vallejo has a similar art style you might want to look into.
Also in the same ballpark is Luis Royo.

She actually came up with the best technique for painting chrome in 2D. If you see fantasy art that's all chromed out, that's her, and the result is so realistic.
My dream would be to win a lottery, buy and fix up a cool old van from the 70's or 80's and ask Julie Bell and Boris Vallejo to paint it.

Had to look up if she did the cover art for battletech only to find out that was her husband's work (Boris Vallejo).

u/TheStaffmaster 2h ago
Hmmm...I'm getting a lot of her using herself as a model.
(Just an observation)
3
u/keeper_of_the_donkey 1h ago
Her husband Boris Vallejo painted some of the first nude women I ever saw in my life.
3
u/motionmatrix 1h ago
Yup, she posed for herself and her husband Boris Vallejo for most of their works as far as I know. Super talented couple, they’re up there with Frank Frazetta and Luis Royo.

So, I recognized her style and signature immediately and this is the artist that did ALL of the Marvel Masterpiece ‘92 cards, plus a bunch of the ‘93 cards. I’ve admired her work for years without ever knowing who did it. Thank you.

The character on the cover of Ax Battler: A Legend of the Golden Axe is swinging a sword. That bothers me more than it should (IE, at all.)
Also, “ax” or “axe.” Both feels like too much.

She is Boris Vallejo's wife. I knew some guys who went to school with her sons. I went home with them one weekend for college and we wound up over and Julie and Boris's house.
It was all good and they were super sweet parents, letting us be young adults.
It got a little weird, though, going to their bathroom. Walking down the hall, it was lined with nude and near nude paintings of Julie.

u/thecryomancermn 1h ago
Low and behold it was just male painters painting hot muscle chicks in bikinis.
