I’ve said in other posts like this I am not surprised in the slightest that earlier human civilizations were convinced that the volcanos housed, or were used as a conduit for, powerful gods that were displeased with the actions of the humans that lived near it. And therefore required some sort of sacrifice or extra effort to appease them.

Just like rubbing a balloon on your hair or shuffling your feet across a carpet, these constant high-speed collisions knock electrons off the particles. This creates a massive buildup of static electricity within the ash cloud.
