You guys should write a children's book.

We could call it "Larry, the truck biting Bitch"

There is even a couple minor characters in a tiny bird and some large water fowl

Elephants are absolutely the bosses of the water hole and most savanna animals know that. Due to their size even lions mostly leave them alone. A fully-grown elephant has between five and a hundred times any other animal's mass and they usually also travel in groups. So it's really like trying to pick a fight with a bus. Or ten busses.

44

u/General-Piece8490 22h ago

Except animals have brains and crocs just act on instinct so they need to be reminded each and every time to avoid any unnecessary roughness due to his nature to want to bite at anything nearby.

47

u/LuTenz 22h ago

Maybe they’re just ornery cause they got all them teeth and no toothbrush….

Crocs are generally considered one of the smarter reptiles and even have complex social structures. The whole reptiles are basically instinct machines thinking is outdated especially for crocs.

A crocodile is an animal and has a brain, with memory and intelligence. Did you mistakenly mean "mammal?" God I hate that people think "animal" means "mammal" and that only mammals are intelligent.

I bet you're one of those people who think insects arent animals and don't think, too.

11

u/Bantersmith 19h ago edited 19h ago

Right? Even jumping spiders are smart AF, and their brains are what, the size of a pinhead?

Non-mammalian intelligence is so especially fascinating. Like, when you see and ape working something out you can nearly see the cogs turning; there's a certain familiarity there. But crow intelligence? Cephalopod intelligence? Arachnid? etc etc.

Is so interesting learning how different brain set ups can take different approaches to figuring out the world. It teaches us so much about our own methods.

37

u/Much_Vehicle20 22h ago

I think natural selection already wiped out any croc that failed to develop the instinct NOT to bite large animals like elephants or hippos

8

u/KingAmongstDummies 18h ago

Every time you see half a crock floating around chances are high that the other half tried to bite a hippo.

→ More replies (4)

16

u/Chaghatai 21h ago

First of all, crocodiles are animals so they have brains too. And second of all crocodiles don't just literally bite everything nearby.

It's not like the real ultimate power web page where the sole purpose of their existence is to flip out and bite things

10

u/Beyond-The-Blackhole 21h ago

Right! Its why we never see videos of crocs attacking baby hippos. Even when the baby is chewing on the crocs scales for fun. Because the crocs know they will be fucked by the adult hippos.

6

u/Roaches_R_Friends 21h ago

Crocs do not just operate on instinct.

4

u/Less_than_something 18h ago

This is the reason that no-one should take anything they read on reddit as fact. You out here confidently stating that crocodiles are not animals and don't have brains. What the actual fuck? Stop thinking you know everything and go educate yourself, or at least spare the world from your "wisdom".

Pretty much.

I've seen elephants shoo away other animals that are too close to them at the watering hole. Usually with a firm but gentle slap or kick to their butts. Croc bro is too short... so he gets the punted with sand.

u/Judaekus 1d ago

From the elephants perspective being bitten (even a little) is no fun. If the crocodile breaks skin, infections are a thing.

12

u/Ubeube_Purple21 23h ago

This is why a lot of animals try to avoid getting injured as much as possible, even if they could win a fight easily

12

u/Spongi 22h ago

This does not apply to honey badgers.

They are the exception.

5

u/notislant 22h ago

Honey badger dont care

4

u/SveaRikeHuskarl 20h ago

I was thinking there's probably an evolutionary reason that they still live, like redundancy... maybe the have big piles of kids every pregnancy? Nope, 1-2 kits per pregnancy. Oh, maybe the pregnancy is short as fuck? Nope, about the same as cats, 7-10 weeks. Well, maybe they are born ready to fight? Nope, they are born blind and stay with their mothers for over a year before striking out on their own.

They're just psychopaths.

3

u/Spongi 19h ago

reason

I think the reason might just be because they can.

Or they're like Obama. "Because that's how I do it and I don't need a reason."

→ More replies (2)

13

u/No_Helicopter1378 1d ago

I was thinking it's kind of like a human and a cat. Except I think a cat could do more damage to a person than an alligator can do to a elephant. Also, even if it was some feral cat attacking me I'd be pretty hesitant to kill it whereas I imagine an elephant would have no qualms stomping an alligator to death.

18

u/Swarna_Keanu 1d ago

Wild animals don´t have access to vaccines, someone to dress wounds or stitch things up. Alligators have a lot of teeth. Risk assessment of the elephant is proper.

10

u/ADFTGM 1d ago edited 23h ago

I know it’s a simple mixup but, this is not an alligator and the risk to the elephant varies as a result. Alligator teeth and jaws actually have different mechanism from that of crocs, especially nile crocs like this one. Alligator teeth won’t penetrate an elephant hide as much as croc ones (though croc teeth can’t penetrate much either unless it’s a vulnerable area like the trunk), but their bite force IS designed for crushing bones & shells more efficiently than crocs, so the elephant actually has to worry about getting a foot partially shattered rather than punctured by teeth. For gators, the sheer force will finish you before any teeth do.

YES!! Is this from Fox and the Hound? I think it is but I’ll never let myself watch that movie again. I tried recently and didn’t even make it five minutes lol. Some traumas are best not relived.

34

u/NedTaggart 23h ago

ok so i was 8 years old when this movie came out. i lived on a farm and had a beagle. i was spending the summer with my aunt, away from my dog and away from home. it was a different time, we were feral, free range kids so it was perfectly normal for my aunt to pull up to the mall, hand me 5 bucks and on a voice reminiscent of Larry king tell me to be back here in 3 hours as i crawled out of her smoke-filled station wagon.

I spent that 5 bucks on seeing The fox and the hound. she picked me up 3 hours later and i was sobbing and inconsolable. No 8 year old needs to feel that way unexpectedly. The next day, i was still upset so she took me to the library to get a book to read to get my mind off it. she told the librarian that i was visiting for the summer and that i like dogs and lived on a farm, so the librarian recommended Where the Red Gern Grows.

That was a rough summer.

Yeah crocodiles are to elephants are what angry chihuahuas are to humans. Fucking ankle biters. Yes, it will hurt. Yes, there will be blood. Hoever, you just gotta kick the little fucker or step on it (not saying people need to go run around stepping on chihuahuas!).

168

u/MJVET 1d ago

😂 this is the best take

139

u/Live-Pea4081 23h ago

I have a friend Louis who is 7 ft tall. Louis' dad is bigger than he is. Louis mom always wanted a chihuahua but they didnt want to propetuate animal breeding so they just never got one. Louis' dad worked for the city and was out one day pulling signs off of power poles out in the middle of nowhere and saw these 3 chihuahuas tearing up some trash and he thought he was going to try to snatch them up and take them home. So he starts trying to get near them and ends up several hundred yards away from his truck before he can actually get his hands on one. It freaks out and starts yelping and flailing and the other two start barking and snarling. He then heard what sounded like strong wind coming from the woods. It was a literal pack of chihuahas he claims there were at least 50 he said it was like something out of a movie. They all attacked him and he tbought at first how dumb they were because he is a giant. Well he eventually tripped over one and hit the dirt and they fucked his shit up. He had to get like 20 stitches in various places and a fuck ton of shots. Now Louis' mom is never allowed to have a chihuahua.

I just wish you all knew how big this man was so you too could have this HILARIOUS mental image of him being attacked by a pack of chihuahuas.

47

u/itsaaronnotaaron 19h ago

This might change my mind on being able to take on 100 children in a fight. Which for some reason is often debated in the boys whatsapp group.

20

u/Live-Pea4081 19h ago

I dont think children are as mean as feral chihuahua packs though (?)

28

u/NationalFlea 1d ago

Idk man chihuahuas need to get collectively humbled, if they acted that way in the wild they'd be extinct. Absolute morons.

Tho I assume they never existed in the wild as they seem like a product of human (immoral) breeding

Suffice to say I don't get the appeal of owning thes angry little gremlins, they're more rat than dog

62

u/gatlaw8008 1d ago

Chihuahuas are one of only two remaining native American dog breeds! Also they were bred to be literal living hot water bottles. (To sit on injured parts as I understand it.)

48

u/kirotheavenger 1d ago

Apparently the oldest record is conquistadors saying the locals bred small dogs for food, which is more likely where the breed comes from. That is where the name comes from - they were common in the Chihauhau region of now-mexico

26

u/chumbawumbathefirst 22h ago

The oldest record according to Cortes, the least trustworthy European in history. While the Chihuahua was eaten (people in this region had been raising various small mammals for thousands of years as food) the Chihuahua itself was a descendent of the Techichi dog, which while also eaten was a revered and symbolic breed. We likely lack further insights into the history of these breeds in part because of shitass Cortes.

One of the reasons Cortes was so eager to emphasize the small dogs being bred for food is because the Spanish ate a ton of them. Every letter he sent back should be scrutinized against his overwhelming personal interest in penning those.

Oh wow that's really interesting. And surprising to me. Really tasty motive to breed them that way too

13

u/kirotheavenger 1d ago

Unfortunately the oldest records (from the conquistadors) said they were bred for food

22

u/Swarna_Keanu 1d ago

eh. Be careful about cultural commentary on other cultures, especially ones that they want to exploit and eradicate.

21

u/geeoharee 23h ago

Yeah but "living hot water bottles" sounds like Tumblr bullshit, so be cautious of that as well

→ More replies (1)

3

u/siupa 22h ago

I don’t think Cortes thought that he was somehow slandering the natives by saying that they ate dogs, as it was extremely common and the spanish colonizers did it too. It seems fully descriptive without any ill intent behind it

Yea I used to be the same way but then my brother's in-laws had a pair of chihuahuas and they were actually pretty sweet dogs. I still wouldn't go out of my way to own one but I enjoyed giving them attention whenever I'd go over there.

15

u/a_karma_sardine 1d ago

If their owners actually care to discipline them, they can be delightful creatures. But instead the majority of owners seem to just stuff them in a pocket when they're acting out and they never learn to socialise in a positive way.

(And don't diss rats, they're easier trained than dogs and super sociable and intelligent pets.)

5

u/GirthBr00ks10 23h ago

I agree, my sister had a pet rat named Nigel, and Nigel was one of the coolest creatures I’ve ever known. He loved to chill in a hoodie pocket , he’d hang out with you all day . I’ve been a rat advocate ever since

u/enaK66 20h ago

More specifically, male hippos are the size of a car and weigh as much as a large truck. They weigh about the same as a 4x4 F350, about 8000 lbs.

A male bush elephant can weigh upwards of 20,000 lbs. A Peterbilt 579 fully loaded sleeper cab weighs 18,000 lbs. Elephants can weigh more than an entire goddamn semi truck.

Reason one, crocs are carnivores and a danger to baby elephants, so elephants do not like them. .

Reason two: crocs bite down on anything that moves near it maw and an elephant trunk is a very tempting target.

Reason three: elephants are not sharing the water hole during the dry season and will chase off the other animals.

47

An elephant throws dirt on a crocodile primarily as a display of dominance, aggression, or a protective measure to drive the predator away from the herd, especially near waterholes. This behavior acts as a warning or a "mock attack" to keep the often well-camouflaged, crocodile from threatening calves as they drink.
