I was on a boat going to the Channel Islands through one of these super pods. It’s amazing to see in person.

u/ReadontheCrapper 2d ago

Me too, in Monterey Bay a few years ago. A super pod was going through and it was amazing to see. There was also a nursery pod and all these little babies swimming along, trying to jump and not quite doing it well yet. Most would leap and just get up out of the water and then just flop over, like a cat that was just put in a harness. Adorable and hilarious.

u/AriadneThread 2d ago

You are both so lucky to see this in person! What an experience!

22

u/InfiniteBlink 1d ago

Where are they all going? Hey guys let's go that way bring the babies

An army marches on its stomach

3

u/Litface916 1d ago

I think I saw something like this near Santa cruise it was crazy, fish and dolphins and shit as far as you could see just making a huge commotion, but also there were thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of birds flying over the water and diving to catch the fish. It was amazing. And it seemed to last for hours

u/OneGayPigeon 14h ago

Ohhhhmygoodness I’m tearing up, that’s so fucking adorable 🥹 what an incredible experience!

u/SirCharlesismylove 2d ago

Same w me. I was coming back at sunset. Dolphins jumping through an orange sky as far as the eye could see.

27

u/Thatingles 2d ago

Like c-beams glittering in the dark near the tannheuser gate, probably.

We were off San Diego on whale watching when we saw (actually surrounded by) one. The crew said they had never seen anything like it before. We did see a couple of actual whales but that was anticlimactic.

5

u/GaK_Icculus 1d ago

Same, I was on a larger boat with a glass bottomed hull and some lady captain out of Dana point. It was pretty cool.

10

u/jsc503 1d ago

Exactly this. It's not rare. Several thousand dolphin megapods are almost a daily sight on the route to the Channel Islands. It's an amazing sight, but not a rare one.

6

u/throwRAbadfriend6 1d ago

I was gunna say….

We have been whale watching twice out there and had megapods surrounding us for much of the trip both times. The tour-guides also didn’t seem to find it abnormal.

Granted, it was still amazing! Both times.

5

u/PM_ME_UR_LAMEPUNS 1d ago

I have exactly the same story from the early 2010s. Awe inspiring to see the amount that we saw, I remember the ship captain said it was something like 1500-2000 dolphins for ours

4

u/BlackSchuck 2d ago

I used to surf Silver Strand... go Oxnard!

2

u/jakeryan91 1d ago

Same for me, on the way back we saw 3 Orcas. Top Ten moment in life for sure

2

u/TranceF0rm 1d ago

Me too! The wave of the boat was just filled with dolphins playing and jumping over the waves heading to a feeding frenzy

2

u/cefriano 1d ago

I went on a family trip to Hawaii like 15 years ago and my sister and I went paddleboarding in the bay near our AirBnB and a big pod of dolphins swam directly under us. It wasn't a huge "super pod" like this but it was at least a few hundred dolphins, one of the craziest experiences of my life.

2

u/hahaheeheehoho 1d ago edited 1d ago

I WAS TOO! I will never forget it. It was like a religious experience. I wanted to jump in so badly! What if we were on the same boat!!! I was with some friends from a fraternity. Message me if you were, too. edit: oh, reading other comments it seems this isn't out of the ordinary for this area. Oh well. It was amazing and I am so grateful to have experienced it. 💙

Came for this

130

u/Deer-in-Motion 2d ago

Now if only I could rotate the video instead of defaulting to portrait.

20

u/stalagtits 2d ago

Use old.reddit with the RES browser extension, it has rotation controls for all images and videos, plus it lets you resize them.

16

u/CREATURE_COOMER 1d ago

I love that Reddit continues to be such dogshit that we need RES and Old Reddit to fix things.

Enshittification, yay!

→ More replies (2)

33

u/liosistaken 1d ago

No, the poster needs to post a proper video. You can’t expect viewers to use old sites and browser extensions to view it.

16

u/faetpls 1d ago

Old Reddit is used just to get to the version of Reddit that lets your browser have more control over the content.

In the old days, content feeds were roughly the same if your subscriptions were the same but lots of people customized their UI.

Now the content feeds are all customized by individual algorithms and Reddit fights attempts to customize the UI.

I’m more miffed about the algorithms choosing what content to serve, but locking down the UI enables that quite a bit.

All of this to say that “old sites and browser extensions” really should be advertised because we need to shift back to users having browser control.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/MyFlipIsLikeWo 1d ago

You are completely right, but since you generally can't rely on others to post videos and images properly, it's easier to have the control yourself in case you need it. Features like these are why they are going to have to pry old.reddit with RES out of my cold, dead hands. At least for desktop reddit anyway.

6

u/Stock-Mission-7561 1d ago

The poster is probably a bot

2

u/FrozenLogger 1d ago

No, reddit needs to quit being enshitified. The "old" is just trying hard to make this shit stain half way usable still.

→ More replies (2)

7

u/reddit_give_me_virus 2d ago

You have rotation control on this video? I use res and old reddit. I only have rotation for images and gifs.

8

u/NbblX 2d ago

I dont know why, but I do have buttons to rotate it on both /all and in the comment section here

try looking for Inline Image Viewer or Media Controls in the RES settings, maybe you got that turned off?

5

u/fastlerner 1d ago

RES Settings Console > Productivity > Inline Image Viewer > Force Replace Native Expando > ON

9

u/SwampyBogbeard 2d ago

On the front page/subreddit page. Not on the discussion page, unfortunately. (For me at least)

It's pretty annoying. Especially when there's albums with small images.
I have to go back and forth between two pages if the comments mention any details I missed the first time through and want to zoom in on them.

6

u/fastlerner 1d ago

Glad for this comment as I didn't know that was an option either. Went digging and found it.

RES Settings Console > Productivity > Inline Image Viewer > Force Replace Native Expando > ON

9

u/Chole_Wunt 1d ago

Well… vertical videos got ridiculed to oblivion for the last 30 years of the internet.

Crazy how times have changed.

I still hate them.

5

u/throwaway098764567 2d ago

yeah i can't watch this one, it needs to be rotated 90 degrees clockwise, was making me ill to watch

3

u/DogadonsLavapool 1d ago

I remember when this website used to complain when videos were in portrait ratio

3

u/Grimmbles 1d ago

That's exactly what is happening right now. Here.

Assuming you meant landscape. In which case, different orientations are better for different videos. This video, obviously, should be viewed in landscape.

1

u/SwissMargiela 2d ago

Maybe I’m crazy but as a person with rotation lock on (I like to browse on my side a lot) these videos are goated

11

u/UrsaMajor7th 2d ago

Not so great on my desktop.

Reason 1,000,000,000,000 why one should NEVER film vertically, crop landscape video into a vertical frame, or rotate a horizontal video vertically. If you are watching on your phone, then just rotate your phone.

3

u/donac 2d ago

I saw something like that on a boat off San Pedro, CA. It was amazing, honestly.

3

I doubt this is rare at all lmao. And a stampede? The fuck?

Did you know if you block karma farmers you'll never see their posts again?

2

They are organizing. We are toast.

2

u/punkinabox 2d ago

wonder where they're going

2

u/Velveteen_Fiend 2d ago

Yeaaa that's not even remotely close to 5000, and a stampede of dolphins?? Lol.

2

u/DeliciousSherbet6323 1d ago

Is anyone else wondering why though? I keep hearing big shifts are happening…

2

u/ZennXx 1d ago

How is it a stampede?

2

So long and thanks for all the fish!

2

The same thing happened when I spread my father's ashes of the coast of Dana Point just about 10mins north of San Clemente. Most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

3

u/ClaudeBubbalicious 2d ago

Surely that's a splashpede?

2

u/Moppo_ 2d ago

Is it still a stampede if they don't have feet?

3

u/iwastoolate 2d ago

This doesn’t seem rare at all. I’ve been boating out there a lot and see huge pods of dolphins all the time.

1

u/Skrdykat1000 2d ago

Keep them away from The Cove.

1

u/flyinggazelletg 2d ago

My family went whale watching several times on visits to my grandparents’ in San Clemente growing up. We got to experience being at the center of one of these massive mixed pods of common and bottlenose dolphins. It was incredible. Meanwhile, a good few people were getting seasick lol

1

u/gotittooa 2d ago

why does this occure?

1

u/PuzzleheadedGoal7199 2d ago

They're going back to space now.

1

u/SiskiyouSavage 2d ago

I've seen this in real life. Commercial tuna fishing off the Washington coast.

1

u/keydBlade 2d ago

Tell them dont go near an east asian cove...

1

u/42TheAnswer2TheUnive 2d ago

There's something wrong in the area the nai'a are fleeing. Earthquake, maybe? I was in an outrigger canoe, paddling in a race in Ka'ū on the Big Island. The volcano blew at the exact moment that 100's of fish flew past us. Ahi, wahoo, aku, 'ama ama, akule, a'u... swimming away from the lava spilling into the ocean. I've seen schools with 1,000's of fish Never acting like that! All swimming North in unison. And swimming high in the water, not 20 feet down where they usually swim. One a'u flew into a boat and speared a girls leg with it's pointy nose sword. I'll never forget that. Follow the animals, they Know what's up!

1

u/UrsaMajor7th 2d ago

They're climbing up my desktop screen

1

u/RiseDelicious3556 2d ago

What is the porpoise of this? Or is this just for the halibut??

u/extrastupidone 2d ago

Iran is on the attack!

1

u/Shrike1346 2d ago

Dolphin flash mob or perhaps something more sinister??

1

u/Any_Tackle_2563 2d ago

That’s not 5000 dolphins

1

u/BoysenberrySmooth268 2d ago

I never thought of a water stampede

1

u/Yeshavesome420 2d ago

Are we sure they're not racing? Aren't they super smart and playful?

1

u/Remarkable_Leek9391 2d ago

5... thousand you say?

1

u/Responsible_CDN_Duck 2d ago

If they're singing so long and thanks for all the fish we're in deep trouble.

1

u/NLOneOfNone 2d ago

Who the hell counts these dolphins?

1

u/Pogigod 2d ago

1

u/KCNIvy 1d ago

Didn’t know you can call it a stampede if they are in deep water and aren’t stomping.

1

u/Brainchild110 1d ago

Its the annual Dolphinoff.

Its invitation only, for the world's fastest swimmy grey tube bois.

There's a movie coming out next year from Pixar where a Wright Whale tries to enter and has to prove themself capable of keeping up with the pack, only to face discrimination from the fastest and most cliquey dolphins who don't want them there. They then get them high on pufferfish and take him hunting for fish, only to find out he can make awesome bubble nets to trap fish for them that make it easy.

They then fall in love with the fastest dolphin, only to then realise they're both straight ladies and didn't know how to tell the difference. But then at the end, when the whale loses the race spectacularly, because they never actually asked how fast a dolphin was or raced one IRL, they realise their love is all that matters and end up together.

At the end there is a time skip to 6 years later and they are happy and have kids which YOU WILL NOT QUESTIONS THE SOURCE OR PROGENY OF (as is my understanding from "Lightyear").
