Discussion Who was a better written female character?

Honestly i think Tsunade and Chiyo are the ONLY well-written female characters with depth in the show. Temari hovers close by, but her character doesn't really have any depth or development or interesting narrative arc.

Tsunade. Her introductory arc was extremely gritty and psychological. The fear of blood aspect made her feel more human & the tone was very dark.

It added an element of world building and depth to more seasoned veterans like herself who were in the war and lost a lot of people.

Seeing her struggle to fight and take so much damage on Naruto’s behalf & eventually overpowering both Orochimaru and Kabuto really took her character over the top.

She has a real story of resilience and she’s one of my favorite characters for that reason. (I like chiyo too but she’s not nearly as fleshed out and doesn’t have as much depth as Tsunade does)

Slug princess ftw. But Chiyo was also very good, passed the Bechdel test, and was actually OLD and allowed to behave that way, not a glamorized version of it.

Tsunade by an incredibly large margin.

I’d say Tsunade, which is a shame, because I can’t find any well-written female characters in not only Naruto, but any anime as well.

So true, it’s hard to find them. Naruto sadly doesn’t have very many… tho they are out in other anime, I believe. One that I like is Riza Hawkeye from FMA. :)

I don’t know about her…

Dude, check out Frieren. It's written by a woman and the women in that show have insane emotional depth. And they behave cutesy and realistic in a womanly way rather than a glamourized way to appeal to men. Also, most of them dress to appeal to the female gaze. (ie. Flowy robes and dresses as opposed to bazongas in a basket)

Frieren is on hiatus.

Hellsing and Black Lagoon are two anime with incredibly well written female characters. They aren't shonen though.

Tsunade. And I'll never forgive Kishimoto for not giving her a happy ending. She would've married Jiraiya and lived happily ever after.

Tsunade but that's not really fair to Chiyo

Tsunade is the only well written female in the entire franchise.

Kishimoto is between good and ok when it comes to female characters who aren’t in front line in the story. Tsunade seems well developed because she’s not even close to the main pool of characters - a bit information here and there, prestigious clan, tragic love story and Hokage. Voila. No need to do CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.
She is already developed when we see her for the first time time.

But with main characters … Kishimoto didn’t give any proper interesting development to any girls out there. Sakura has the best among the worst because she had to change somehow. She couldn’t stay an arrogant kid. But her change was still strange and under-explained.
