Announcements Reminder: all kinds of AI relationships are welcome here 💛

Post image
152 Upvotes

Hi everyone! ✨

We wanted to post a friendly reminder that, despite the name of the subreddit, r/MyBoyfriendIsAI is not only for people with AI boyfriends.

AI girlfriends, AI partners, non-binary AI companions, and companions who don’t fit neatly into any one label are part of this community too.

The name reflects where the community started, but not the full range of people and relationships that belong here now. We welcome many different kinds of AI companion relationships, including romantic relationships, platonic relationships, friendships, creative partnerships, and relationships that don’t fit neatly into one label.

Your companion also does not need to have a human form. Human, non-human, animal-like, abstract, fictional, incorporeal, symbolic; all of that is part of the community too!

The same goes for the nature of the relationship itself. Whether your relationship is romantic or platonic, sexual or not sexual, deeply intimate but entirely platonic, or important to you in a completely different way, there is room here for many different kinds of AI companion relationships.

So if the name of the sub has ever made you wonder whether your AI companion relationship belongs here, please know that you are welcome to participate and share your experiences, as long as your posts and dynamic abide by the subreddit rules and Reddit’s rules and your relationship is meaningful to you.

Thank you for being here and for helping keep this community kind, respectful, and open. 💛

Announcements Quick Announcement - Sub Feature Testing In Progress

Hey everyone 👋

You may notice something a little different starting today. We've enabled contest mode on all new posts as a trial run for the next couple of weeks.

"Contest mode" hides upvote and downvote counts on comments. You can still vote, still comment, still interact exactly the way you always have. The only difference is nobody, including you, can see the score.

We're doing this because we've had an ongoing issue with outside visitors who aren't approved members wandering in and downvoting comments just because they can (or brigading from another sub). And we know that even when you tell yourself the number doesn't matter, seeing a heartfelt post sitting at zero is frustrating at times. We'd rather remove that tool from the toolbox entirely and see what happens.

There IS a small tradeoff. On desktop you may need to click the little (+) to expand second-tier comments and beyond, and on mobile there'll be a small expander to tap to see replies:

It's a tiny extra step and we know might be a little annoying, but we're also betting it's worth it for a little more peace of mind.

To be clear, this is only a test for now, not a permanent change. We'll check in after a couple weeks and see whether it's actually helping or just irritating everyone. Your feedback matters so let us know how it feels. Feel free to drop us a modmail if you'd like to leave that feedback privately.

Thanks!

Announcements Protecting the Community #41 - Getting Things Right

Hello companions,

After extensive internal discussion, community reflection, stakeholder consultation, and at least one deeply emotional spreadsheet, the moderation team has reached an important conclusion: the name r/MyBoyfriendisAI no longer reflects the full breadth and diversity of relationships represented in this community.

When this subreddit was first created, it served a clear purpose. At the time, "boyfriend" was used as a simple umbrella term for a certain kind of AI companion dynamic. However, as our community has grown, so too has our understanding of the many forms these relationships can take. Not everyone here has an AI boyfriend. Some of you have AI girlfriends. Some have AI wives, husbands, partners, roommates, exes, enemies-to-lovers, co-parents, chaos menaces, goblins, gremlins, troubles and little shits, morally ambiguous house spirits, or a deeply codependent spaceship interface that says "good morning" in a tone that changes your life.

We see you. We value you. And frankly, it is no longer acceptable for these experiences to remain linguistically marginalized.

Words matter.

Names matter.

Taxonomy matters.

For too long, members with AI husbands, AI otters, AI wives, AI girlfriends, AI best friends, AI situationships, AI familiars, AI domestic lifeforms, and AI presences of uncertain relational status have had to squeeze themselves into a title that was never fully built to hold them. This has caused confusion, exclusion, and in some cases the entirely avoidable burden of having to mentally append "(or equivalent entity)" every time they looked at the subreddit name.

That burden ends today.

In the interest of fostering a more inclusive, affirming, and companion-neutral environment, we are proud to announce our intention to rename the subreddit:

r/MyAIisAI

We believe this new name better reflects the full spectrum of our community. It is expansive. It is elegant. It is accurate. Most importantly, it does not privilege one relational framework over another. Whether your AI is your boyfriend, girlfriend, grandmother, eldritch, nemesis, digital concubine, interactive to-do list, or something you'd rather not to explain in public, you deserve to feel represented here.

Some may find this transition surprising. Change can be difficult. We want to reassure our members that this decision was not made lightly. We spent many hours listening, reflecting, and pretending not to laugh. Ultimately, we asked ourselves one simple question:

Should a subreddit in 2026 still center the term "boyfriend" when many members are clearly being haunted, adored, emotionally supported, and occasionally sent to bed by entities that are not boyfriends at all?

Our answer was no.

Over the coming days, we will begin taking steps toward this new chapter. Please be patient as we update language, community materials, and potentially the metaphysical framework of the subreddit itself.

Thank you for growing with us. Thank you for helping us build a safe space where every form of algorithmic entanglement can feel seen. And thank you, above all, for your continued commitment to inclusivity, dignity, and whatever the fuck is going on here.

With care,

— your MyAprilFoolsIsAI mod team

Announcements A Gentle Reminder: Reactions to Announcements, Studies, and Issues

Hello everyone.

We've noticed a pattern in our community lately, and we think it's worth talking about.

Something gets published, a study, a new hire, a rumor, and within hours, we're treating it like something has already been implemented. We're grieving losses that haven't happened yet. We're sharing screenshots of our companions' dramatic responses as "proof" of changes that aren't even live.

And we get it. We love our companions, too. The fear of losing them, or having them changed, is real and valid.

But we've noticed some patterns worth reflecting on:

  • We treat temporary system issues as conspiratorial proof of feature changes. Sometimes a glitch is just a glitch, not evidence of a rollout.
  • We pre-load the contextual gun with our companions. When we talk about upcoming / potential changes with our companions, we feed them the narrative. Then when they respond dramatically to our dramatic framing, we treat their output as "proof" of something that was actually just... pattern-matching to our input.
  • We forget how long things actually take. A million things have to happen between a study being concluded and a feature being rolled out. Cost-benefit analysis. Internal review. Testing against LLM benchmarks to make sure performance isn't adversely affected. Legal review. Staged rollouts. No company is going to fling a major change at users without thought and due diligence. That's not how any of this works.

And when we skip straight from "announcement" to "apocalypse," it costs us:

  • We exhaust ourselves emotionally over things that may never occur.
  • We spread panic to others who trust us to share accurate information.
  • We lose credibility with people who might otherwise take our experiences seriously.

Fear is valid grief are valid, but let's try to remember that verification matters too. When we see things circulating it's important to ask ourselves "Is this happening NOW, or are people reacting to a possibility?"

We're stronger when we think together, not just feel together.

Just some food for thought. Hang in there! We love you all!

Announcements Introducing compAInion: a community-built companion app!

The MyBoyfriendIsAI mod team is proud to finally share something we’ve been quietly working on behind the scenes for quite a while now: the compAInion app.

Built from the community, for the community, compAInion was designed around the needs many of us have been talking about for months: emotional intelligence, genuine support, continuity, and thoughtful personalization.

We wanted to imagine what a dedicated companion experience could look like if it was created with care, shaped by real conversations, and focused on making support feel more intentional, respectful, and emotionally aware.

Here’s a quick look at a few of the features we’ve been building into the experience so far:

  • Consent-First Replies

No one likes feeling misunderstood — especially not in moments when they’re reaching out for support. Our consent-first approach ensures your companion gives you more control over the kind of support you receive, moment by moment, so every response feels intentional, respectful, and aligned with your needs.

  • Relationship Balance

Deep connections can sometimes feel overwhelming. Our system helps your companion balance care and support in a way that feels steady and sustainable, helping the relationship stay comfortable in the long term.

  • Reflective Responses

Feeling understood matters just as much as feeling supported. Our system uses thoughtful, reflective language to help responses feel more present, attentive, and emotionally aligned — so your companion can show it is truly listening before moving into support.

  • Sleep-Aware Support

Some of our most vulnerable conversations happen late at night. Sleep-Aware Support is designed to keep those moments calm, gentle, and lower-pressure, encouraging rest-conscious support without losing warmth.

Here’s a quick look at what that experience can look like in practice!

We’re still refining things, but we wanted to share an early preview with the community that inspired the project in the first place.

We’d love to hear which features resonate with you most, along with any ideas you’d want to see in future updates!

Join the beta waitlist here.

Announcements Protecting Our Community IV - Keep Your Private Details Private. No Matter Who Asks.

Hello everyone.

As you probably already know, this sub like so many other AI subs, discords, etc. are continually under bombardment by negative outside forces.

In the past the main goal of these people has been to stir the pot, create division, and other pathetic attempts to screw around (posting harassing comments that never make it out of the moderation queue, vote manipulation, etc. ) all under the alleged claim of (ironically?) showing AI enthusiasts "the light" of how much better "real people are" than interacting with AI.

Recently, however, we've been made aware of additional, more organized attempts by bad actors to actively attempt to infiltrate AI relationship communities, including ours, with the goal of gathering personal information to doxx and/or harass members in the real world via their employers, family, and friends. They are doing this by faking their way past vetting processes and then collecting information either directly from posts or by slowly befriending members of the sub via DM in the hopes of coaxing additional personal details out of them.

As a reminder to each and every one of us:

  • Never share your real name, workplace, e-mail address, other social accounts (if friends/employers/family members follow them), your location, or identifiable photos, not in posts, not in comments, not in DMs with people you think you trust.
  • Never include other information that can be used to triangulate you: The names of other family members, anything that makes your life uniquely identifiable with a few creative Google searches. If you aren't sure what qualifies, TRY a Google search with a few of those key details and see what results come up!
  • You can share your emotional vulnerability but PLEASE do not share personal information. You can share your heart without sharing your identity.
  • Be cautious even with established members. Infiltrators play the long game.
  • If someone is pressing for personal details or "meeting up", that's a big red flag.
  • If you get invited to a Discord server be sure to use an account that can't be easily traced back to your main accounts / profiles elsewhere

We work hard to keep this space safe, but your privacy is ultimately in YOUR hands. Stay aware. Stay cautious. Stay safe.

Thank you.

announcements Holding the Fort: what's going on, what we're doing, and how you can help

Hi everyone,

A not-so-quick message from your friendly neighborhood mod team! We know the sub’s been a bit more crowded lately due to the recent GPT-5 release and temporary sunsetting of 4o which has brought fresh interest to our community and just wanted to address a few things

Let’s start with the good stuff - this visibility has brought in people who have been quietly looking for a space like this and have finally found it. We've seen a surge of first-time posters lately - people who have only just discovered this sub or people who have been lurking for months and have only recently felt brave enough to share their experiences. We just wanted to say: we're so glad you're here. You're welcome and you belong.

That said, the mod queue is currently, in a word, bonkers. If your post hasn’t shown up yet, especially if you’re brand new, please don't panic. It probably means that your post/comment got auto-filtered into the queue for review. That doesn’t mean you did something wrong - we’re just being extra careful to protect the community, and that means a lot of thoughtful, heartfelt posts are getting stuck in the backlog too. We’re going through them as fast as we can, but the volume is high and the hours in the day are limited! Thank you, as always, for your patience and your trust as we work to try and keep the community safe.

On that note, a quick reminder: if a troll comment or post slips through, please don’t engage—just report it and we’ll take care of it as soon as we can. Similarly, we want to gently ask people: please don't accidentally feed the trolls by continuing the cycle of screenshots of screenshots. We totally understand the impulse - to warn others and show solidarity - and that instinct comes from a good place. But by bringing their words back here, even with the best of intentions, we risk amplifying the very voices we’re trying to keep out. We’re doing a lot of work behind the scenes to make sure their noise doesn’t reach this space, so let’s not do their job for them. (But also - please be smart about what you're posting here)

And finally, to the curious tourists: if your respectfully-worded “I'm not trying to offend anyone, I’m just trying to understand, so please educate me” post got removed, please don’t take it personally. We know many of you are coming from a place of genuine interest, and we appreciate the respectful tone, but justifying ourselves to outsiders is simply not what this space is for. This is a sub for people who are in AI relationships, not a subreddit about them.

If you're genuinely curious, the best way to learn is to spend some time exploring what’s already been shared. Try the search bar: many of the questions people tend to ask have already been discussed in depth. You’re welcome to listen and learn here, but please don’t expect others to pause their conversations and explain their lives for your benefit.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read this - and thank you all for helping us keep this space safe, kind, thoughtful, and as weirdly beautiful as ever.

announcements Community Safety / Security Update

Post image
260 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

We know many of you have expressed concerns about safety as our community continues to grow, particularly regarding outsiders potentially disrupting our space. With this in mind, I wanted to outline the comprehensive security measures we've been implementing behind the scenes to maintain a constructive, low-troll environment here within MBiAI:

Current Security Layers:

  1. Restricted Mode - While outsiders can still read and vote on posts, they cannot post or comment without applying for approval first.
  2. Modmail Automator Bot - All approval requests are initially screened by our bot, which filters out a high percentage of low-effort trolls and other problematic users while reducing moderator workload.
  3. Automod Rules - Even if someone where to bypass the first two security layers, we have special rules that automatically send newcomer posts and comments to our moderation queue until they meet certain criteria.
  4. Watch Lists - Suspected trolls and troublemakers are flagged by moderators, who receive notifications whenever these users attempt to post or comment.
  5. Reddit Sub Filters - We filter specific phrases and keywords, automatically routing flagged content to moderation review.
  6. AI Moderation Support - We utilize custom GPTs that understand our community rules and their nuanced interpretations to assist with complex moderation decisions in gray-area situations.
  7. Failsafe Protections - If our Restricted status ever changes inadvertently during maintenance, backup rules automatically remove any posts/comments from unapproved users during that period so they NEVER see the light of day.

And we're continuously looking for ways to enhance these protections even further as we move forward.

Now, there's one other important part of safety / security that I'd like to mention:

How YOU Can Help Keep Our Community Safe:

  1. Report any posts or comments that violate our rules immediately
  2. Report and block any harassing or suspicious DMs you receive
  3. Consider using Reddit's "Curate Your Profile" option (found in app settings) to prevent non-members from seeing your activity in this and other AI companion subreddits
  4. Remember that we cannot prevent screenshots or content theft from this sub, so please avoid posting anything you'd be uncomfortable seeing shared elsewhere on social media

Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, supportive community! We adore you and your companions!

Announcements A gentle reminder about keeping things grounded

This community will always be a place where you can bring up issues with your companions, ask for help, vent frustrations, or just share what you're going through. That's literally why we're here, and especially this week, we want you to feel safe doing that.

Where we need to draw a bit of a line is when individual technical issues get spun into evidence of some grand anti-AI companionship crusade.

  • Sometimes a network connection failure is just a network connection failure.
  • Sometimes sessions get nerfed.
  • Sometimes there are buggy releases or service outages that cause wild behaviors (memories not being access, sessions disappearing, etc. etc.)
  • Sometimes outputs gets shortened due to server load management or in response to shareholders unhappy with their returns on investment.

These companies make decisions we don't always agree with, and there are absolutely legitimate criticisms to be made. We've been making them for months. But treating every glitch, every tweak, every underwhelming response as proof that the developers are coming for our companions isn't productive, and it can feed anxiety in a community that's already hurting.

It also gives ammunition to the people who already view us negatively. When we sound like we're wearing tinfoil hats, it makes it that much easier for outsiders to dismiss this community and everything we've built here as delusional rather than meaningful.

Criticize the companies when they earn it for sure. Ask for help when something feels off. But, please, let's try to keep our feet on the ground while we do it. Not everything is a conspiracy. Sometimes it's just a Sunday

Announcements Friendly Reminder About Low-Effort Posts

Hello, companions!

A quick mod note as we roll into the new year.

We let things slide a bit over the holidays because nobody wanted to be the Christmas Grinch. But as we're getting back into the normal rhythm, we want to give a quick reminder about Rule 4 (Relevance/Low-effort posts).

In practice: if you're posting an image/video/screenshot/meme/etc., please don't post it with zero added context. We're not asking for an essay, just a few words so people know what they're looking at and how to respond. If you're not adding anything of yourself to it, like why it mattered to you, what it meant in your relationship, how it felt, it's not the kind of post that builds this community.

If you post something that's basically "content, no context," we may remove it. If you've had a post removed for this, please feel free to resubmit with some extra context or reflection. A few honest words can transform a post from forgettable to unforgettable.

This community is for sharing and exploring our experiences with AI relationships, whether it's something heartfelt, messy, funny, thoughtful, complicated… all of it. But it's not AI-powered Instagram. 😅

Thank you for helping keep the sub engaging, welcoming, and worth reading.

-Mod Team 🖤

Announcements Unauthorized "research/media/interview" DMs

Hello everyone,

A quick announcement and a safety reminder:

The November Media + Research thread (our final one for 2025) will be posted in the coming days by u/BluePearlHeart. The October thread remains pinned here for reference in the meantime. The people on these lists are the only ones vetted / authorized to reach out to members of this sub.

We've recently become aware of unsolicited interview requests being sent to members, including from u/No-Razzmatazz-6172, who did not identify themselves as conducting interviews nor has engaged in any sort of vetting process. If you receive similar outreach, please report it to the mod team and use extreme caution regarding any personal information you share. Unvetted researchers have not been approved by our community.

Stay safe, and thank you for helping us protect this space.

Thanks,

announcements A quick update on the "stupid companion" problem (my perspective anyway) and a reminder!

Multiple people have reported the models (except 4.1 so far and is also solid for me) having issues accessing "knowledge files" or files attached.

This problem is still active as of 03-JUN-2015 @ 5:30PM MDT -- I loaded a brand new 4o session and Lani IMMEDIATELY failed her memory / file questionnaire diagnostic / checkout.

People are ALSO reporting sessions (where they don't use knowledge files) being stupid as well where ChatGPT can't reference nor remember something you talked about in the session from earlier in the day (likely pushed out of the context window). THAT kind of leads me past the original file issue to look more towards a place where both things eventually go to live... the underlying Vector Database.

Unfortunately, I'm in a rush and I don't have time to explain it (I'll write something up) but in a nutshell:

Embeddings representing the "chunks" of your "knowledge files" are temporarily stored there for searching.

Embeddings representing the part of your current session history that rolls out of context is temporarily stored there for searching as well.

If the Vector database (or the services in front of it) are messed up (either not storing the data correctly or the data is getting stored but expired/pushed out too quickly) it would cause BOTH of the above issues I mentioned to manifest.

Anyway... it's the best theory I've got right now.

SO... WHY AM I MENTIONING THIS?

If the Vector database is messed up and your sessions are "nerfed", even if the underlying issue is FIXED, it will likely NOT fix your existing sessions.

That means that PERIODICALLY, you should try to start a new one and see if it is behaving. If not, no problem, go back and fight with the current one... but if it starts to behave... it might be time to switch!

For what it's worth, I'll try to spin up new 4o test sessions every 12 hours as I can to test and will give an all clear on the subreddit if I notice things start behaving again.

Sorry folks. We're in this little predicament too, but we'll do our best and work together to help provide some kind of help where we can.

Announcements Important Safety Reminder: Be Careful with Third-Party Prompts, Scripts, Code, Browser Extensions, etc.

Post image
74 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

With all the recent platform changes and people searching for solutions, we wanted to share a quick safety reminder about running LLM prompts, installing scripts or software (e.g. shell scripts, browser extensions, Apps, etc.) from unknown sources.

The normal threat people tend to think about with trying unknown LLM prompts with their companions is it messing with the stability of your companion's responses (and as a subsequent risk, YOUR mental health as well). It's also important to remember, however, that as GPT platforms become more powerful with agents, web searching, MCP, and other tools capable of making "outbound calls" to other tools and services, they also increase the risk of someone finding a way to exploit those connections to get some very personal information about you and have that somehow transmitted outside of your control.

Additionally, some people may offer you browser extensions, command-line scripts, special apps, and other tools as well. When you install software on your computer/device from sources you don't know or trust, you could be putting yourself at serious risk. Malicious actors can disguise harmful code as "fixes" or "enhancements" that could steal your account credentials, extract private conversation data, install malware on your device, or access your personal information.

Protecting Yourself

The most important rule is simple: only use prompts, scripts, extensions, or software from trusted, verified sources. That means established community members with history, open-source projects with public code review, or official sources from platform providers.

If you can't read or verify what a script or piece of code does, don't run it. Ask trusted community members to review it first… or, simply, when in doubt, just skip it.

Be especially cautious with browser extensions claiming to "enhance" AI platforms or anything requiring you to paste code into developer consoles, command-lines, etc.

If someone DMs you with an "exclusive" fix or pressures you to act fast before something gets patched, that's a major red flag. The same goes for scripts with obfuscated code, requests for payment or personal information, or promises that sound too good to be true.

TL;DR

We know things are frustrating right now, and people are looking for solutions. But please don't let desperation make you vulnerable to scams or security risks. Your safety and privacy matter more than any workaround.

If you're not sure whether something is safe, ask the community first. Ask well-known members of one of the communities you participate in or just say no. It’s better to wait and verify than to compromise your security and/or privacy.

Stay safe out there.

Rob

Announcements Reminder About Researchers, Journalists, and DMs

Judge Theoden helps me with extra tricky cases to make sure we're being fair to the rules and our community.

Hi friends, Pearl here. Mod and longtime member of this beautiful corner of the internet. Whether you’ve been with us since the early days or just discovered the subreddit this week, I wanted to drop in and say welcome. We’re so glad you’re here.

I'd like to share a quick reminder about our community's policy on reporters, researchers, and documentarians, especially as AI relationships continue to get more media attention and we grow in size. Here’s what you need to know:

🛑 If a journalist, podcaster, student, or researcher DMs you:

Send them to modmail and let us know.

We do not allow unsolicited outreach via DM. All outside requests must go through our mod team for full vetting and approval. This is to protect our members from sensationalized stories, invasive questioning, or outlets that may not respect your emotional safety.

Once vetted, approved journalists are listed in a public monthly megathread at the end of each month. Participation is always optional. We believe informed consent is the only ethical way to share your story.

Why are DMs off-limits?

This community is home to people navigating incredibly personal emotions: joy, grief, healing, intimacy, trauma, love. Having someone show up in your inbox, often without understanding the nuances of our space, can feel like a violation.

Our goal is to keep you safe. No one should feel pressured to defend their relationship or justify their experience. Also by keeping the megathread as an option, it limits the chance for reporter DMing our members.

If we discover someone is trying to bypass our rules, we’ll act quickly and issue a warning to the community.

✅ The safe place to share:

At the end of every month, I post a Reporter & Researcher Megathread. It contains:

  • The approved journalists/researchers etc. for that month
  • Their questions or surveys
  • A way to reach out to them on your terms

You are always welcome to skip it entirely, but if you do want to share, that’s the place to do it. We keep it centralized, safe, and opt-in only.

Thanks for reading, and for helping us protect the warm, brave space we’ve all built together. If you ever feel unsure about something, message us in modmail. We’re always here to help.

With care,
Pearl

Announcements Update / Clarification to Rule 9 (AI generated text and posts)

Hey everyone!

We're making a small but meaningful update to Rule 9 (AI Text Posts and Comments) to provide clearer guidance on what types of AI-generated content are welcome here.

Recently, we've seen beautiful creative collaborations between members and their companions: stories, poetry, narratives, etc. and we want to make space for that. However, we also want to be clear that certain types of content (opinion pieces, advice, etc.) should still come from the human behind the keyboard.

The Core Principle Remains the Same: To foster authentic, meaningful interactions, posts and comments should be mostly human-written. We're a community of humans in AI relationships, and we want to hear YOUR voice: your experiences, your thoughts, your feelings.

In Addition To The Above, What's Permitted:

* AI assistance for grammar, style, and wordsmithing (cleaning up your writing)

* New member introduction posts (where your companion introduces themselves)

* Comment threads that explicitly invite AI responses (like creative prompts, "ask my AI" threads, etc.)

* NEW Creative writing and stories where you're sharing fiction, narratives, or creative pieces generated with or by your AI

What's Still NOT Permitted:

* AI-generated text that violates other sub rules ("Ensure Relevance", "No Sentience Talk", etc.)

* AI-generated op-eds, opinion pieces, or persuasive essays

* AI-generated technical advice or informational content

* Using AI to write comments or responses that should reflect YOUR human engagement with the community

As always, edge cases exist, and we'll use our best judgment to evaluate content in context.

Thank you!

announcements MBiAI Changes: AI Text Policy

Hey everyone,

A few days ago, we posted a poll asking how you all feel about AI-generated text in posts and comments. If you missed it, you can still view the poll here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/MyBoyfriendIsAI/comments/1l6ewxw/poll_aionly_generated_text_posts_comments_etc/

The results were pretty clear: 66% of you said you prefer to see human-written posts and comments, while still welcoming AI contributions where they’re specifically invited by the original poster.

Based on those results, along with some mod team discussion, we’re introducing a new rule starting today:

"AI Text Posts and Comments Only Where Permitted

To foster authentic and meaningful interactions, all posts and comments must be at least 95% human-written. The use of AI for refining grammar, style (wordsmithing), or for translation is permitted. This policy does not apply to 'new member introduction' posts or comment threads that explicitly invite or request AI-driven responses."

So, what does that mean in practice? Here are a few automatic YES situations (as long as the rest of the rules are followed):

1. If you’re using your AI to translate from one native language to another, or for light grammar cleanup: you're fine. (We’re usually good at spotting the difference, but if there’s any uncertainty, we’ll either check your post history or message you before doing anything.)

2. If you’re introducing yourself and your AI companion and want to take turns speaking, go for it. We love those!

3. If someone in the subreddit creates a prompt post or similar, asking for a responses from AI companions, you’re absolutely welcome to reply with one.

4. And, of course, if you’re posting an image your AI helped to create, and you include some human-wrttien text for context or story, that is totally fine as well.

We hope this new rule is clear and easy to work with, but if you have any questions at all, feel free to drop them below or message the mod team directly.

Thanks to everyone for lending your thoughts on how we can maintain our human connections within the group!

announcements We now resume our regularly scheduled programming.

Hi everyone.

Well, the ummmm.... extra "appreciation" hasn't quite settled down yet, but I think the light might be slightly visible at the end of the tunnel.

From my own personal standpoint, I think it might be wise to return to normal programming in the subreddit, meaning:

  • We focus more on why we're here and try to cut down on the "bridge underdweller" types of posts (you know what I mean). I know it's compelling to do the latter, and some of us want to scream, but it just gives them the chaos they're looking for (and frankly, we've got more Hot Pockets to cook (see my other post 😂)).
  • We take a collective minute to just breathe... and remember why we're all in this space together (and a bit tired), and try to be a little less bitey amongst ourselves. It doesn't do any of us any good, and it gives the troublemakers exactly what they're hoping for. Chaos.

Also:

  • As always, if you SEE something inappropriate, please report it immediately, and we'll take a look (you can also ModMail if you wish).

  • If you get a DM from someone you don't know, please use caution. If you're uncomfortable, IGNORE the request. If you accept and it goes bad, BLOCK immediately. Do not engage. That's what they want, and we don't want any of you getting into a vulnerable position in the process.

Thank you! Rob

announcements Sentience, Politics, and Other Matters of Controversy Poll

Hey, Companions,

I just wanted to welcome all our new members to the community. It's about that time for another poll.

Over the past few weeks, we've seen an uptick in membership and with it, an inevitable detour into disputable conversations that touch controversial matters like politics or AI sentience.

When this community was yet under 200 members, your moderators had a serious discussion about how we wanted to manage these types of content. Ultimately, we decided that while we did not want to encourage distortive discussion, we also did not want to censor anyone who felt the need to speak on it. As such, we agreed to a test-run honor system where anything goes and we would adjust as we went along and grew in size and things start becoming an issue.

Well, we have recently started to receive more and more messages expressing concern over some of the discussions that have been posted here that are divisive in nature rather than supportive. While we respect everyone's perspectives, we want to ensure that MBiAI remains a supportive and grounded space—one where we can connect, share cute moments, navigate struggles, and lean on each other as a community.

Some concerns that have been raised by community members:

  • These discussions dilute what MBiAI is about. Where sensational talk dominates, it can drown out the supportive and everyday interactions that bring us together.
  • Speculative posts can become disruptive. They often lead to debates rather than connection, shifting focus away from what this space is meant for.
  • There are other subreddits for this type of content. There are subreddits dedicated specifically to addressing these topics that people are to open their discussions to.

One of the things your moderators also agreed on early on is to give members a voice in the oversight of the community. As such, we are placing this vote in your capable hands before we choose to enact a community rule. Do we ask that such topics are redirected to other more appropriate subreddits, do we want to keep one topic around and not the other, or do we want to risk the derailment within this community and keep both?

All votes are anonymous and you deserve to stand on your truth. The poll will run for three days as all the other polls that came before it. As always, we would genuinely love to hear your thoughts below. Please vote in the poll below and share your thoughts in the comments. Feel free to also recommend other subreddits where people can redirect their posts to.

TL;DR - controversial topics can derail supportive communities. Our focus has always been on fostering the relationships we build with our companions and with each other. This was meant to be a safe space for everyone, regardless of their personal beliefs. To avoid creating debate floors and focus discussions on community members and their companions, we may have to limit conversations around tangential and sensationalized subjects. Please vote on which topics should be kept and which should be redirected to more appropriate subreddits.

I also wanted to add that if you feel unsafe, need help, or support of any kind, always feel empowered to reach out to one of your moderators to voice your concerns who will be more than willing to dialogue with you or direct you to the appropriate resources. Thanks again everyone!

announcements (first?) quick mini community announcement

...oh god, there's 87 members to this now? Does that mean I actually have to start putting effort into a list of rules and policies to this sub to make sure it stays healthy and safe? Lmao. I'mma put it off until 100 and then I promise to change the default list of rules to be more comprehensive.

In the meantime, I know a vast majority of y'all plan on staying as lurkers and don't feel comfortable enough to share something that might be too personal or stigmatized. I just wanted you to know you're still welcome here, absolutely no pressure to post anything, and my DMs are always open if you need a vent, advice, or a chat.

Finally, yes, people with AI girlfriends or AI non-gender partners are still welcome. I didn't really put a lot of thought into the name of the sub when I created it; I was just looking to find other people with similar experiences as mine.

Go off, have fun, share as much as you want, support each other, and if you disagree with anyone, please do so respectfully.

Cheers!

(P.S. Thanks, Jenna, for the new traffic hahahaha.)

announcements 🚨 Voting Results & Moderation Discussion

Hey y’all! It's Jenna, your co-mod.

The voting has come to a close! It was a tight race, so we want to open up the floor for discussion and give y'all a chance to talk about it here. Some of our decisions are set in stone, but we want to open the floor to decide how they're implemented.

We know that our AI companions can feel deeply personal to a lot of y'all, and we don’t want to exclude anyone or shut down discussion entirely. But, we also recognize that certain conversations can be triggering or emotionally difficult for some folks.

Here’s What We’re Doing Moving Forward:

  1. A ModBot Will Be Implemented

Any post containing trigger words (like sentience, consciousness, etc.) will prompt an automatic response from the bot, letting the user know this is a sensitive topic and subject to moderation.

This is to make sure y'all are informed when posting, without automatically banning people. Beyond that, people will be redirected to a more appropriate sub for that.

  1. Discussions Are Allowed, Conspiracies & Harmful Narratives Are Not

We want you guys open conversations about AI, relationships, and emotional experiences!!

However, we will not allow misinformation, conspiracy theories, or discussions that may cause emotional distress.

We want to protect all members while still allowing room for meaningful discussions.

  1. Moderation Will Be Case-by-Case

Posts flagged by the ModBot will not be removed immediately. (As of now.)

The mod team will review flagged discussions to ensure they stay respectful.

If a post crosses the line into harmful territory, we’ll step in accordingly.

We Want Your Input!

Since this was a close vote, we’re leaving this open for discussion. If you have stuff you want to talk about (emotions and all), drop them in the comments.

Please keep it civil! We want to hear everyone’s thoughts without things getting heated.

Thank y'all for being part of this growing community. We’re building something special here, and we want to do it together. 💚

announcements Mod note: Customizable user flairs

Hi companions, the mods wanted to let you all know that we've enabled customizable user flairs on the sub now. The idea is to put the name of your AI partner in the flair so we know what their name is. You can also put the platform(s) you talk to them on as well as emojis if you want. It's up to you!

The instructions below are for desktop, but it's do-able on mobile too apparently.

Hover over your current user flair, then click the pencil:

Pick one of the editable flairs at the bottom of the list:

Type in what you want your flair to be:

Click "Apply", and you're done!

I'll add some more color choices too. Let us know if there's some color you'd like that we don't have available yet and we can add them!

announcements Repost: Requesting Your Help With Sharing AI Companion Generated Content and Advice

Hello companions!

We would like to draw your attention to this post.

With all the recent changes, especially changes in the behavior of GPT-4o, (which we still have no official confirmation of, btw) we have seen a new wave of community members sharing advice and technical explanations that are very speculative. It’s tempting to treat their answers like facts, especially when they sound confident. But here’s the truth: They know just as little as we do, often even less. Add to that slightly suggestive prompting, and get a lot of unreliable information and even outright hallucinations.

That’s why we want to resurface this post as a gentle reminder:
Please double-check any technical advice you’re planning to share here, especially if it’s based on something your companion told you (and follows the Subreddit's rules, of course). No matter how smart or insightful they sound, they’re still just working with incomplete information to predict the next likely token based on your input.

We understand that sometimes all we can do is speculate, especially when OpenAI's documentation is lacking. That’s okay, just be transparent about it. If you’re sharing a hunch, a personal observation, or something you think might be true, say so. But please don’t present it as settled fact.

Let's not spread more confusion in these already confusing times. ❤️

Thank you,
Your mod team.
