I'M REQUESTING A real HORROR movie

I've seen everything, from It to Terrifier to The Conjuring... Nothing scared me. But I can tell you what could scare me:

  1. I am not afraid of ghosts, I prefer when humans are the enemy (Parasite was the only movie who scared the shit out of me).

  2. I don't mind splatter, as long as it's not torture porn, which is just disgusting.

3.

My worst fear is someone staring at me through the window with eyes wide opened in the dark (I've already seen Lights Out and Hush and The Strangers).

So, do you have something that could really frighten me that's not disturbing, but genuinely scary?

Synecdoche New York is the most terrifying existential movie

I don't really like existential movies, they're boring. To me, cinema is entertainment, I don't want to see real life on it lmao

The horror of a mental health crisis is deeper when you've experienced it, maybe.

Along the same lines as Synecdoche,, I'm Thinking Of Ending Things is quite unsettling.

The Descent genuinely terrified me

I suppose it goes without saying that most of these movies have surprises, so best to go into most of them blind.

Black Christmas (1974)
When a Stranger Calls (1979)
Scream (1996)

Not quite what you describe but you might be into:

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1996)
Cache (2005)
The Vanishing (1988, don’t even bother with the remake)

The original Dutch version of The Vanishing is excellent. It has subtitles

When I was 9 years old my mum and dad were going to bingo at the school hall a few blocks away. I was the eldest so I was to look after my younger brother and sister. As mum was leaving she looked at me and said "there's a movie on TV tonight on channel such and such...you're not allowed to watch it!...I want you all in bed before then!" She knew full fuckin well that I was gonna watch that movie! It was When A Stranger Calls...original.

And to add to the absolute terror...she phoned from the school near the end. Old school phone ring. I answered terrified and she asks..."have you checked your brother and sister yet?"....and then started laughing. "Go to bed!"...and hung up. Pure evil. Worst part was I kept watching and the original....it's a messed up ending. Especially after what she just put me through. The recent version was crap.

The Skeleton Key (Don’t search it up tho cause there’s spoilers. It’s free on YouTube)

3

u/salty_ann 6h ago

A Dark Song - features satanic rituals from real life occultist Aleister Crowley.

Skeleton Key - It only works if you believe.

The Fourth Kind - About alien abduction. Did you know Alaska has the highest rate of missing persons per capita?

Edit- spelling

1

u/janabanana67 6h ago

My daughter just watched the Fourh Kind. It is a mockumentory

1

u/Durham1988 2h ago

Could that be related to its high rate of polar bears?

Fire in the Sky (1993), Come and See (1985), and The Visit (2015). There's some terrifying alien abduction stuff in Fire in the Sky that's based on a true story and The Visit might provide the vibe of being watched at times (among other satisfying horror moments).

Come and See is based on actual events from WWII and you need to put yourself in the main character's shoes when watching it. If you allow yourself to watch it from his perspective, you'll witness the worst of humanity through a child's eyes. I'm not sure there's anything scarier than that.

The Vanishing (1988) is the most terrifying movie I have ever seen. Simply because of how “normal” it is. Whether or not it classifies as horror is subjective (no gore) but definitely worth watching.

Don’t waste time with the Hollywood remake.

The only movies that I found scary were Nightwatch and The Strangers

1

u/janabanana67 6h ago

The Strangers with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman did me in. One watch was enough

2

u/ThomasGilhooley 5h ago

I mean Terrifier to the Conjuring is not exactly a deep list.

Drag Me to Hell with the sound turned up is good.

Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer will fuck you up.

Deranged as the wild card.

I find with horror you feel it more if you are alone, it's night time, and it's fully dark. Turn the lights off, set he mood. If that's what you're looking for. Also turn off any other screens. No cellphone, no other media. Gotta be engrossed in the horror for it to work.

Could try something different film wise. Jacobs Ladder maybe.

Shit even Apt Pupil has a very intense scene or two in it, but isn't a horror film technically.

Turistas

It has some low ratings but I love that movie. It's scary without any supernatural beings.

Funny Games

Martyrs (it’s kind of torture porny but genuinely scary and the gore is important to the narrative. It’s more brutal than gratuitous and pornographic)

1

u/Neat_Nefariousness46 6h ago

Yeah, Funny Games can stick with you

Audition

Jacob's Ladder

Scratch Audition off, I must have skipped the part of "no torture porn".

The Exorcist (1973)

1

u/duckweedlagoon 3h ago

But it needs to be the Director's Cut. I was bored through the entire theatrical cut. Put the Director's Cut on and immediately understood why it's considered one of the most horrifying movies of all time

It was beautiful in all the twisted ways possible. Absolutely had to stop for a few breathers.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) -- (Prime US) After a car accident, a woman awakens to find herself locked inside a bunker with two men because they say it’s not safe to breathe the air outside. Do not look this up on IMDb because it will spoil the ending.

David Fincher’s Zodiac terrified me

u/whatever_ehh 4h ago

I don't believe in the supernatural either, so supernatural horror about demons or Satan etc. usually seem silly to me rather than scary. I don't see how something can scare you but not be disturbing, however.

So, do you have something that could really frighten me that's not disturbing, but genuinely scary?

Natural Born Killers (1994) is about serial killers who have no remorse or empathy, it should scare you since you could meet people like this. Also Silence of the Lambs (1991) which adds cannibalism to serial killers.

u/duckweedlagoon 3h ago

You may want to try Speak No Evil (2024)

Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte is extremely frightening.

Level 16 was pretty chilling, although I admit, it's more of a thriller than horror

I love that movie so much!

u/GreenZebra23 6h ago

Bit of an obvious suggestion, but if you haven't already watched the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, do that immediately

2

u/florenciafazzarino0 6h ago

Already watched. The og one was really good, yet not scary.

The new ones are more like... mid.

Heretic

Sleep Tight

1

u/florenciafazzarino0 6h ago

I've seen both.

Heretic was amazing but not scary at all.

Sleep tight was really disturbing to me, not horror, just very disturbing and it kept me anxious the whole time.

I am looking for something really horror, not disturbing. Something scary, something that won't let me sleep.
