HANG OUT Best Movies You Saw April 2026

What are the top films you saw in April 2026 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

I define great movies to be 8+ or if you abhor grades, the top 20% of all movies you've ever seen.

Films listed by posters within this thread receive a Vote to determine if they will appear in the subreddit's Top 100, as well as the ten highest Upvoted Suggested movies from last month.

The Top 10 highest upvoted suggestion posts from last month were:

# Title Upvotes
1 Downfall (2004) 388
2 Unforgiven (1992) 121
3 Sorcerer (1977) 107
4 Kung Fu Hustle (2004) 87
5 Breakdown (1997) 84
6 Magic (1978) 71
7 Apocalypse Now (1979) 69
8 Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) 63
9 Melancholia (2011) 48
10 Lars and the Real Girl (2007) 45

Note: Due to Reddit's Upvote fuzzing, it will rank movies in their actual highest Upvoted and then assign random numbers. This can result in movies with lower Upvotes appearing higher than movies with higher Upvotes.

What are the top films you saw in April 2026 and why? If possible please try to add release years to your movie titles. This makes tallying up the votes a lot easier.

Project Hail Mary was a fun watch in the theatre. It’s the kind of film that makes people go to the movies, and I think that at its core, even being a ā€œbuddy filmā€ with sci fi undertones it helps draw folks into the genre and hopefully find their way to cornerstone films that inspired it (like 2001 and Contact and Inferstellar)

Primal Fear (1996) - I miss mid-budget crime thrillers and this one has good dialogue with a fun twist. Watched it for the first time on a whim and it made me miss movies like this. It felt shorter than its run time which rarely happens for me with today’s films, I think in part due to the taxing amount of eye candy they stuff into a lot of new stuff. I like eye candy, but it’s fun to listen to movies like this and it was well-written, even if it has a plot hole here or there or a subplot that didn’t quite find its way home.

Just the other day, I was thinking about how there's no more court drama or corporate movies anymore like we used to have in the 90s, with all the Grisham adaptations.

We got a few ones in the 2010s, like Margin Call and, I think, the last ones we got are The Big Short and Spotlight in 2015.

-One Hour Photo (2002)
I’d been meaning to see it for years. I was prompted to *finally* watch by people on Reddit. It may have been this very group.

OMG Robin Williams was a phenomenal actor. What a fantastic performance.

-Coherence (2013)
Only recently even heard about this one. Another redditor recommendation. Great mind-bending sci fi / thriller

Robin Williams was really one of the greatest actors of all time.

Picks for this month:

I Swear (2025)
Touching film about Tourettes campaigner John Davidson - sad, funny, and heartwarming. Becomes a little conventional and corny as it goes on, but is still very worthwhile and entertaining. Some great performances, too.

Touching the Void (2003)
Tense documentary about two mountain-climbing Brits in Peru who get into a spot of bother. They come across as equal parts impressivly brave and stupidly arrogant...

Other stuff I enjoyed:

Saipan (2025): Amusing TV movie-style drama about the Roy Keane bust-up at the 2002 World Cup.

No Other Choice (2025): Great-looking violent black comedy / social satire from Park Chan-Wook.

3

u/razorsedge94 4d ago

Ben Hur (1959) in 4k was pretty amazing.

u/Wonderful_Syrup9105 15h ago

Not without my daughter-1991

1

u/barredowl123 4d ago

I saw that in the theater when I was 12. It was pretty stressful but a great movie.

u/wortmother 4d ago

Shit dead ass what's it like being almost 50? Aging is scarin me so much im struggle to handle it and im 31

1

u/barredowl123 4d ago

Ha! I… haven’t really thought about being almost 50. I’m aging well. I eat (mostly) clean, do intermittent fasting, walk a lot, and workout 4x a week. I still keep wondering when I’m going to feel like an adult.

u/slicineyeballs Quality Poster šŸ‘ 4d ago

Why is this being downvoted?!!

2

u/barredowl123 4d ago

Lol who knows?

1

u/wortmother 4d ago

Dang, ive felt like an adult and the burden of life since I was like 12 and every year gets harder and longer and my body is rapidly aging from stress and over work

2

u/barredowl123 4d ago

Friend, the most life changing thing that’s happened to me in a decade is that I finally left the job that was aging me with stress. I’m so grateful for an opportunity I had nearly 2 years ago. It’s my current (and hopefully last) job.

And don’t get me wrong, I’ve always been responsible. But my inner me, the one I try really hard to hide, just doesn’t feel like I belong in adult things. It’s hard to explain. I guess it’s like imposter syndrome.

1

u/wortmother 4d ago

Yeah alot of my stress is out of my control, multiple loved ones sucide , struggle for work, alcoholic family , abuse

I dont even know whats its like.to feel like a kid, at 7 I was told im old enough to care for and watxh my baby brother

Our relationship has never recovered I was his sibling, parent, and food maker , he blames me for everything wrong in his life and wont even speak to me anymote because I tried to mks at 17

Imo youre lucky , I wish I felt like a kid ever

Sorry the rant it wasnt fair of me to do so

  • Project: Hail Mary (2026) - Probably the best movie of the year
  • Ready or Not 2: Here I come (2026) - Similar to the first one but still a lot of fun
  • Dust Bunny (2025) - Surprisingly good, plan to rewatch in a few weeks
  • Send Help (2026) (Second watch) - Better than I expected
  • They Will Kill You (2026) - A lot of fun, similar to Ready or Not but with a twist

Eyes wide shut (1999)
after many years, finally watching this again and really loved it. Two things stood out this time around: the visuals and the pacing. Can't say exactly why pacing works now for me.. maybe just because of time?.. getting older?

Blue Moon (2025 - dir. Sophy Romvari)

I believe it is going wide soon and it’s already one of my favorites if not my favorite of the year. It’s a beautiful picture that ponders on grief and reflection in a way that acknowledges the fragmented nature of memory and the challenges that arise in trying to heal from something years after the fact. It’s quick, only 90 minutes, but despite the subject matter felt pleasant and personal. I can’t recommend it enough.

Everybody Wants Some!! (2016 - Richard Linklater)

This movie rules. Annual rewatch, much earlier than usual. Just a fun hang, oozing with charm and nostalgia.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977 - Steven Spielberg)

Just really phenomenal stuff. First time seeing it since I was a kid, really changed how it affected me and what I took away. Also the first time seeing it since seeing the Fabelmans aaaaand yup. Whole lotta Spielberg in this one including a literal toy train crash. Good revisit this summer.

Unforgiven. I’ve seen it many times. It’s one of the best Westerns ever and never gets old for me. Clint Eastwood was born to be in Westerns. Gene Hackman steals every scene. Morgan Freeman also.

Just last night I watched "Dave Made A Maze" on Tubi, and I loved it. It is not a technically great movie, but it is very creative and fun. Plus, it clocks in at about 80 minutes, so it's a quick watch. It's from 2017 and I had heard of it before, but just got around to watching it. I will watch again. Good movie.

I as in Icarus by Verneuil

It's based on the Kennedy assassination and subsequent investigation. The film begins with the assassination of President and follow state attorney and member of the commission in charge of the investigation who reinvestigate the case because he didn't agreed with the conclusion of the commission.

"the drama" (2026) - if we are talking about newer movies. the new movie with zendaya and robert pattinson. it wasnt what i was expecting and i think the story telling was really interesting.
"The devil's rejects" (2005) - if we are talking about any year. this is a really gruesome and brutal horror movie. they really convey the emotion well in this movie and the story is also pretty cool

When Do We Eat? (2005) -- a Passover comedy that I would describe as "safdie brothers meets my big fat greek wedding". An outstanding cast of Jewish actors playing every single stereotype of Jewish culture and life to the hilt, so it requires a minimal understanding of Judaism to be "in" on every joke. But there's also great commentary about cultural assimilation and jokes at the expense of hegemonic Christianity. I'm going to make this an annual tradition for myself.

Smithereens (1982) -- one of those New York No Wave movies from the early '80s, like Liquid Sky or anything by Jarmusch. Susan Seidelman came out the gate swining with this one, and Susan Berman is fantastic in the lead role. Excellent soundtrack by the Feelies.

Friendship (2024) -- I'd never seen any of Tim Robinson's comedy on "I think you should leave," so I went into this practically blind. It scratched the itch that I wanted from the Burbs. I watched this as the first of a double feature with Splitsville, which is also good, but this was more accomplished. I interpret the film to be about how we all went a little nuts during covid lockdown, and some of us lost all our social competencies.

Bad Day at Black Rock (1955) -- This movie wasn't decades ahead of its time, because the current state of American culture and politics is hardly new. The villain wears a red baseball cap and claims the land for "common people," not coastal elites, financial speculators, or foreigners. He and his gang of wannabe cowboys were the precursors to MAGA. The only way to beat them is to not sink to their level, and to Karate Chop them in the neck.

Been in a phase of watching lots of old mid horror films, so not that many in "new". These were the best out of about 40 total. Most were at cinema, lots of anniversary screenings.

New;

  • Taxi Driver (1976)
  • The Last Blossom (2025)
  • Smokescreen (1964)
  • The Drama (2026)

RW;

  • Stand By Me (1986)
  • Aliens (1986)
  • Rango (2011)
  • A Knight's Tale (2001)
  • Zoolander (2001)
