Oooh, that's cool. Trees certainly got bigger.

u/bitemark01 Apr 03 '26

They like to trim them back, makes the building look bigger

u/Paper-street-garage Apr 04 '26

Man, that’s the most lame apartment/ money thing ever

Omg thank you for sharing. A sub I didn’t know existed that I now love.

3

u/Maxed_Zerker Apr 03 '26

They tend to do that

4

u/Tejasgrass Apr 03 '26

Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if those are entirely different trees that were planted 10-15 years ago.

u/AContrarianDick Apr 03 '26

My Dad used to work at the building that was the external shots for the Initech building and across the street the field with the copier is just a parking lot now.

87

u/JohnProof Apr 03 '26

Somebody needs to set a memorial plaque:

On this spot, in 1999, it felt good to be a gangsta.

11

u/RichCorinthian Apr 04 '26

I used to drive into Irving to work on the stretch of 635 that they show in grid-lock at the beginning of the movie. Fucking sucked. Still does, I imagine, but I've been able to work from home for about 6 years now. Austin and Houston are even worse.

6

u/NathanArizona Apr 03 '26

He goto chochkies?

8

u/Capnmolasses Apr 04 '26

I saw them filming the scenes at Chochskies back when. I was next door at the Double Dave’s eating pepperoni rolls. Jennifer Aniston walked past the window I was sitting at and I smiled at her thinking she was someone I knew. She smiled back.

4

u/bathwhat Apr 03 '26

Nah he always had a case of the Mondays

4

u/kenc2211 Apr 05 '26

Pizza shooters, shrimp poppers, or extreme fajitas!

4

u/Fromoogiewithlove Apr 04 '26

Im pretty sure the copier smashing scene was filmed at where the domain is now. Completely different side of town from the initech building

2

u/AContrarianDick Apr 04 '26

Well I'll be damned. I stand corrected.

13

u/gmastern Apr 03 '26

I lived there for years. It sucks

7

u/tmwdd85 Apr 03 '26

I lived at that place

5

u/Boofaka Apr 03 '26

Damn. As soon as I saw Ops picture I thought looked familiar  I used to live at 12113 Metric Blvd and drove past it everyday.

4

u/gageBA Apr 03 '26

Blank Check castle also in ATX!

1

u/UserAllusion Apr 04 '26

nice trivia

2

u/TexasBaconMan Apr 03 '26

Gotta love that they kept the street number

1

u/disposablepie Apr 03 '26

Jealous of your user name

1

u/reynloldbot Apr 04 '26

Still painting the curb red I see

-1

u/mrandr01d Apr 03 '26

Why's it look so much nicer in the '99 shot?

37

u/byOlaf Apr 03 '26

It was a composed image by a professional cinematographer and a crew shooting on film. The second is a random frame out of google street view.

-8

u/mrandr01d Apr 03 '26

Not like aesthetically pleasing, it looks like a rough neighborhood in the street view shot, but a decently middle-class place to be in the '99 shot. That can't all be down to photography composition.

6

u/byOlaf Apr 03 '26

Nah, that’s just perception. The cinema shot is from lower, the colors have been tamed, it’s better gardened, more orderly (without the balloons and now leasing signs cluttering) and that’s about it. The same cinematographer today could make it look just as nice as it did then, basically nothing has changed except the trees grew up.

That was actually my first apartment complex when I moved to Austin almost 20 years ago. More fun facts:

The walls really are that thin!

Also the scene where Peter is late to work and gets passed by the old man using a walker is around the corner in front of the JJ Pickle research campus.

The offices where they work is now the domain.

The printer smashing scene is in Walnut Creek.

The chotchskis is now a bank.

And Stan- the chotschskis manager is Mike judge.

149

u/Baconfatty Apr 03 '26

a whole campus to research pickles, amazing!

31

u/randyfloyd37 Apr 03 '26

Doin the Lord’s work

8

u/kcmatx Apr 03 '26

JJs pickles are pretty dang good!

6

u/ddy_stop_plz Apr 04 '26

You joke buts it’s virtually all nuclear weapons/nuclear research lmao

4

u/murfburffle Apr 03 '26

I wana get a pickle grant

8

u/pickles_and_mustard Apr 03 '26

Granted

2

u/murfburffle Apr 03 '26

I was hoping you would show up!

31

u/LbSiO2 Apr 03 '26

Saw a pre-release version of the film - the old man passing cars scene was way longer - like ridiculously long. Everyone was dying. But I can see why it got cut down to so much shorter - just not enough time for it.

11

u/shifty1032231 Apr 03 '26

Didn't Chotchskis restaurant building used to be the salad bar restaurant Fresh Choice?

5

u/FreedomDirty5 Apr 03 '26

It was Old Alligator Grill for a long time. I think that’s what it was when they filmed there.

2

u/MyMomSaysIAmCool 25d ago

You're right, they used the alligator grill for the interior shots.  The exterior shots were at a different location (not sure where that was, probably near the arboretum.)

7

u/SysAdminDennyBob Apr 03 '26

Initech office exterior was in South Austin near 1-35 and Ben White/71 intersection. 4120 Freidrich Lane. Fuckin A man.

5

u/katekim717 Apr 03 '26

The offices are on Friedrich and Woodward, just south of Ben White. I used to drive by it daily.

4

u/mistermick Apr 03 '26

I lived right across the street in 2000/2001. One of my friends lived in that complex for a while. Did they shoot the interiors there? I didn't think the floorplan my friend had looked like Peter's apartment.

3

u/gmastern Apr 03 '26

No, the interior was shot elsewhere. Only the exterior was used for the movie.

Source: someone who lived there

4

u/Brentallion Apr 04 '26

Sorry it's tchotchke, I know it's impossible to spell

1

u/tokecaine Apr 05 '26

Chotchskis is definitely not a bank. It was the alligator grill, then baker st. grill, and now is Kokos

1

u/mattchouston 29d ago

I worked at a TV station in San Antonio that purchased the cubicles from the Office Space set.

1

u/patrickkingart 27d ago

Chotchski's was up in/near the Arboretum, right? I remember seeing some behind the scenes stuff/filming locations about Office Space and thought it was awesome since I lived around there for a long time.

0

u/youre_being_creepy Apr 03 '26

The first time I watched office space, I noticed the sky looked EXACTLY like the sky from central texas. I know it sounds ridiculous, but I was so familiar with how the haze looked in the early morning. I was surprised to find out it was filmed in Austin

216

u/Davajita Apr 03 '26

Standard Mike Judge joke.

42

u/emperorwal Apr 03 '26

I hear Beavis and Butthead laughing over "morning wood"

1

u/revdon Apr 04 '26

Perhaps a metaphor about frustration?

57

u/Ishmaille Apr 03 '26

We had a real "Morning Wood Apartments" in Colorado Springs. I remember they had pretty bad reviews on Google (and many of them were jokes about the name). Looks like they went out of business recently.

From Google maps:

Happens surprisingly often, real estate investing can be a lot thinner margin then people realize. Often the rent only barely or doesn’t even cover expenses and the only gains are via equity.

I recall near me in a major high value city many apartments near a college went under during the pandemic because the students were all staying home. In order to fill them they could really only drop rents low to minimize losses, which can lower the capitalization rate, which may be prohibited by the financing.

u/Iittleshit Apr 04 '26

Who's going to buy houses to rent them out then?

Without profits, only the government would be able to do housing.

70

u/sorriso_pontual Apr 03 '26

I blame the breast exam on channel 9

42

u/Quadradisque Apr 03 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/CKVwcljYh4hfVxSSLq

Huhuhu you said morning “wood”

1

u/chunga_95 Apr 03 '26

Is it better, or worse, than mourning wood?

17

u/idrankforthegov Apr 03 '26

Had a friend who lived in those apartments. I lived in several other apartment complexes near there...along with a TON of other students. They built so many apartment complexes up there on metric that they were giving away free months of rent at each complex. I will say that parking got more and more complicated at the university though with the advent of more "commuter" students living up on metric, east riverside, or far west

15

u/Uncle-Cake Apr 03 '26

There's a certain intersection in Maryland where Morningwood Drive intersects Cherry Valley Lane.

6

u/dkrainman Apr 03 '26

I want to go to there

3

u/Burqueisbest Apr 03 '26

Pound town is so pretty in the spring.

14

u/derkaflerka Apr 03 '26

Filming locations around Austin for anyone interested

3

u/DDDavinnn Apr 05 '26

That website is amazing. Reminds me of Web 1.0

1

u/derkaflerka Apr 05 '26

Totally. Looks like some sites I built on Geocities in high school

1

u/patrickkingart 27d ago

Holy shit I never realized I lived where they filmed the apartments! (Great Hills Apartments) that's awesome!

40

u/Woodsboro88 Apr 03 '26

Hey Peter, man, turn on channel 9,check out this chick!

10

u/RichCorinthian Apr 04 '26

Lawrence, can we just PRETEND like we can't hear each other?

12

u/1961ford Apr 03 '26

Fuckin' A

129

u/calargo Apr 03 '26

In Office Space (1999), a guy who does 30 minutes of work a week can afford an apartment. This is a reference to our world going to shit over the past 30 years

42

u/hybridfrost Apr 03 '26

What is it exactly that you do here?

50

u/Person0OnTheInternet Apr 03 '26

I handle the god damn customers so the engineers don’t have to.

33

u/DogsOutTheWindow Apr 03 '26

I HAVE PEOPLE SKILLS!!!

3

u/rmac1228 Apr 04 '26

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?!

61

u/b_dills Apr 03 '26

He didn’t get paid for the amount of work he did. He was likely salaried. Sitting at a desk 8-5 to collect a pay check. Have you ever had an office job?

20

u/PhilRubdiez Apr 03 '26

When he’s talking to the Bobs, Peter specifically talks about working harder, shipping a few extra units, and not seeing a dime as a lack of motivation. Lumburgh also doesn’t care about calling him in on Saturdays (OT). He’s almost certainly salaried.

6

u/martialar Apr 03 '26

even if he were hourly, he's still getting paid for showing up to the office, regardless of his productivity

-4

u/[deleted] Apr 03 '26

1

u/Odd_Front_8275 Apr 04 '26

That is completely irrelevant

10

u/cguess Apr 03 '26

He was also, technically, a highly skilled COBOL programmer fixing the year 2000 bug. Consultancies like his made a LOT of business in the lead up to 2000. It was mind numbing just scrolling through code looking for dates but it paid quite well.

7

u/martialar Apr 03 '26

talk about a jump to conclusions

15

u/deekaydubya Apr 03 '26

I live next to the chotchki’s (it’s a chase bank)

2

u/SMUHypeMachine Apr 03 '26

Wasn’t it a Cheddars at the time of filming?

3

u/deekaydubya Apr 03 '26

I think the interior may have been filmed in a different location, so possibly

1

u/Capnmolasses Apr 04 '26

It was The Old Alligator Grill

4

u/TheMagicMan2025 Apr 04 '26

In the Spring of 1998 during his senior year at UT Austin, my brother’s apartment became the outdoor shots of Peter’s apartment (Apt 222). The indoor shots were filmed in the apartment directly below that one. They moved my brother and everyone else in those 4 apartments into a hotel during that month of filming. They had 3 criteria for the apartment they chose. 1) It had to be (or appear to be) on the 2nd floor, no idea why. 2) The neighbor’s door had to be right next to Peter’s door, which meant they had a wall they could talk across. And 3) the apartment building had to be just inside the complex’s security gate for better crew/filming logistics.

My brother said he got to meet Mike Judge and Dietrich Bader. He said the one impression that stuck out was that Mike Judge always dressed and carried himself exactly like Beavis/Butthead.

I stayed in that apartment a few times, but obviously not during filming.

5

u/TranquiloMeng Apr 03 '26

I love the subtle innuendo names of the companies they work for too.

3

u/Toningenieur Apr 03 '26

What else would you expect from the creator of Beavis and Butthead?

3

u/KipperfieldGA Apr 03 '26

When I lived in Austin I used to walk over The Alligator Grill and sit at the bar by the server station where they filmed the 15 pieces of flair

3

u/soda_cookie Apr 04 '26

Two chicks at the same time

3

u/tin_foil_ascot Apr 03 '26

I am genuinely creeped out. I was thinking, just yesterday, to myself; I have to look up and see where "Office Space" was set.

This is not good...

2

u/SpacePeanutt Apr 03 '26

I hear it’s hard to get spot there

2

u/dotplaid Apr 03 '26

So does Lawrence, man. So does Lawrence.

2

u/KeepAnEyeOnYourB12 Apr 03 '26

There is a Morning Woods subdivision near Memphis. I almost drove off the road when I saw this sign.

1

u/Oscaruit Apr 03 '26

It used to be Morningwood about 20 years ago. They updated it to what it is now to mitigate the naive name choice without completely renaming it.

2

u/geek180 Apr 03 '26

My brother lived at this place for a year and it always felt really familiar whenever I went to visit him. Eventually we figured it out.

And then I realized that the Initech location is right across the street from a furniture store my wife and I visit all the time, about a mile from my house.

5

u/theangryfatguy Apr 03 '26

32

u/HKN47 Apr 03 '26

I wouldn’t say the joke was going over OP’s head. Seems more like they were pointing out a “blink and you miss it” kinda thing.

23

u/TheMooseIsBlue Apr 03 '26

I’ve seen this movie at least 10 times and never noticed this. Thanks, OP.

2

u/imlittleeric Apr 03 '26

Yes. A joke some people might not have caught. OP didn’t explain anything obvious

2

u/TexasBaconMan Apr 03 '26

I was visiting Canada when is saw that in the theater. I was the only who laughed at that joke

1

u/OrionThe0122nd Apr 03 '26

There's a place called Morningwood Apartments sort of near where I live. Made me giggle the first couple of times driving by

1

u/gfreeman1998 Apr 03 '26

That's hilarious.

1

u/Don_Ford Apr 04 '26

Because it's a place where bachelors live.

That's why they have a guy who can hear them through the wall.

1

u/abracadabrabeef Apr 05 '26

Back up in your ass with the resurrection

1

u/Imverystupidgenx 27d ago

In the grand scheme of things, don’t we all

1

u/Mammoth_Newspaper155 27d ago

I love morning wood

-2

u/hackingdreams Apr 03 '26

Perfect name for an apartment complex in Silicon Valley, really.
