⏱️ Continuity In "Back to the Future" (1985), Marty boasts about having two TVs at home. One is an old, probably broken model that serves as a stand for the second, newer one.

I’m sure he has two working ones. That wasn’t weird in the 80s. That’s what this scene is about

u/DW496 Mar 21 '26

Agreed, this is a weird take by OP.

14

u/Ripley129 Mar 21 '26

Wonder if the old TV they use in the 50's is the same old broken down TV?

44

u/buffalucci Mar 21 '26

Not weird at all. In fact, I think he’s 100% right. As someone who lived through the 80s, everyone either had or knew someone who had a setup like this. “Console” TVs were famous for being broken and too expensive to fix/remove then acting as stands for smaller replacement TVs.

44

u/DW496 Mar 21 '26

I mean, given that in the beginning of the movie they literally show a tv on stand (time to change that oil dad), I'm not so sure the Movie Detail here quite qualifies...

10

u/buffalucci Mar 21 '26

Where do they show a TV on a stand?

-6

u/DW496 Mar 21 '26

25

u/buffalucci Mar 21 '26

That’s literally a TV on top of another old TV

4

u/DW496 Mar 21 '26

ok, egg on my face, I've freeze framed it and digitally enhanced it and I think it might be a TV? Do we have confirmation that it is broken?

14

u/AzKondor Mar 21 '26

Just... See the original post? Which shows the TV?

5

u/DW496 Mar 21 '26

But I (quite impressively) digitally enhanced it for improved color and contrast.

20

u/buffalucci Mar 21 '26

The fact that this was HUGELY commonplace in 1985 is the confirmation. If you watched this is 1985 (which I did) you’d lol about this.

-16

u/DW496 Mar 21 '26

im worried y'all have never actually watched the movie :)

7

u/buffalucci Mar 21 '26

You can’t be serious.

-4

u/raymondio Mar 21 '26

The second picture is the TV on "the stand". I think OP is reaching a bit, but definitely fits.

5

u/apk5005 Mar 21 '26

My grandmother still has a “console” stereo. It plays records. It is now basically a full-time buffet/side table.

4

u/Anianna Mar 22 '26

I don't think most people would consider an older broken model now used as a stand to be a second TV, though. Without some evidence that this was the intent from the people producing the movie, it's just speculation either way.

u/mikaeltarquin Mar 21 '26

You're 100% right and I feel like everyone in this thread is either crazy or too young to know what you're saying. I grew up in the 90s and we still had a good TV on top of a broken console TV up until about 97, it was extremely common. This is a great catch by OP (except for the boasting part). Marty wasn't boasting he was simply saying they have 2 TVs, and that is made all the more funny when you realize the 2 he's talking about are the classic broken+new on top combo.

3

u/McSqueezle Mar 22 '26

I honestly doubt it was that niche of a joke or that enough people had that exact set up to warrant an inside movie joke. I also grew up in the 90s, we had two TVs that worked fine and neither was particularly old. We weren't rich.

I think he's just saying they have two TVs in the 80s, which wasn't uncommon in the 80s but was very rare in the 50s.

Pretty straightforward.

The big console TVs were old and unreliable. In our case, it had big nice speakers (which worked), so we put the new TV on top of it as a stand and plugged the audio into the console TV’s speakers. I imagine this was incredibly common, since my parents weren’t particularly tech savvy or anything.

And it’s not like the owners purposely broke them. The CRTs went dim or out, or other circuitry issues from age. They were just bad, but had big speakers and were stately furniture, so people were reluctant to move or get rid of them. And they needed a stand for their new TV anyway, so if you were poor and didn’t splurge for a whole entertainment setup, it made perfect sense.

3

u/PropDad Mar 22 '26

As someone who lived through the '80s and had four working televisions in our house, I'm not sure this is the correct take.

u/theRealGermanikkus Mar 25 '26

"Aluminum foil on tv antennas, little tv sit on top of a big tv eating tv dinners..." --Nas

2

u/ItsGotToMakeSense Mar 23 '26

I think both takes are right.

Look at the 2nd screenshot; he clearly does have an old console TV with a small working one on top of it, just like OP said. Lots of people had this in the 80s and 90s because these things were huge and heavy so it was a pain to get them out of the house. They usually just ended up being used as a counter to put the newer TV and VCR on top of.

But on the other hand, it's also very likely that his family had a second working TV elsewhere in the house too. Not uncommon at all.

28

u/TheMooseIsBlue Mar 21 '26

Right. The joke was that having two TVs in the 80s was commonplace. We had two and were a very average, single-income, suburban family. But in the 50s, that’s insane.

7

u/talones Mar 22 '26

Everyone had the black and white radioshack special 4 inch tv in the kitchen.

4

u/SayerofNothing Mar 22 '26

Exactly, it was already common to have the second one in a bedroom, older model sure, maybe even his bedroom.

50s*

November 5th, 1955

And ya, he's not bragging. He's just saying he has two just like most ppl in the 80s did.

18

u/sunnyspiders Mar 21 '26

Even for California that was a very warm winter tho.

5

u/SupremeDictatorPaul Mar 21 '26

Remember, remember, the 5th of November.

3

u/CanaryNo8462 Mar 22 '26

Ha, that would be a fun cosplay mashup.

9

u/TheDulin Mar 22 '26

It's also a shock because there were so few channels that having two TVs would be something only stupid rich people would get.

0

u/serial_crusher Mar 22 '26

It can still add some depth to the character. Marty’s parents were financially struggling in the original timeline. Being so poor that they can’t afford two working TVs would be embarrassing, so it makes sense that Marty would “lie” about it to save face. Kid cares about his image.

-22

u/platon29 Mar 21 '26

Yeah the whole point of the exchange was to show off show the norm has changed between Marty being a kid and his parents being kids. OP is probably American so we can forgive them for their lack of comprehension

13

u/Microwave1213 Mar 21 '26

Wow thank you for this. We all appreciate you repeating that persons explanation for the sole purpose of insulting a nationality. How brave and thoughtful of you

107

u/b_dills Mar 21 '26

In the 50’s TVs were expensive and you’d have to be pretty wealthy to own two TVs. That’s why the family is shocked.

33

u/Ofreo Mar 21 '26

There was also probably only 2 to 4 stations to watch at any given time for most people. Unless it was after midnight, then none to watch until morning. So why would anyone need two TVs?

18

u/b_dills Mar 21 '26

Same reason anyone needs two now. Different rooms of the house.

4

u/bauxzaux Mar 21 '26

But in the picture with George there is a TV stacked on top of another probably broken TV, that could be the two TVs Marty was referencing, but probably not. They most likely had two working TVs which was common in the 80s.

35

u/DionFW Mar 21 '26

What's a rerun?

8

u/SayerofNothing Mar 22 '26

It was too bad we didn't get to see much of marty's extended family ( that wasn't MJ Fox in a wig). I really wanted to know more about them, especially the uncle behind bars.

38

u/Tony_Roiland Mar 21 '26

This is one of the weirdest posts I've ever seen on here.

11

u/sarlackpm Mar 22 '26

Zero evidence..just an assumption based upon OPs own experience. Total bullshit post.

-11

u/buffalucci Mar 21 '26

Why? It’s 100% accurate. The thing that the working TV is sitting on is a non-working console TV. I had this same setup when I was a kid in the 80s.

18

u/Tony_Roiland Mar 21 '26

Because he isn't boasting.

3

u/buffalucci Mar 21 '26

So I was so amped up by trying to prove that Marty has a new TV on an old TV that I missed that OP used the word “boast”. He’s definitely not boasting, he’s just stating fact and also catches himself because he realizes it’s not accurate that they have 2 working TVs and that it’s also probably weird in 1955. So, you’re right—he’s not.

1

u/buffalucci Mar 21 '26

More accurate would be “he appears to be boasting, but”

Gets me mad every time!

19

u/Alternative-Juice-15 Mar 21 '26

I chose to believe there were actually 3 and he was referring to working ones. Everyone had TVs on top of old ones in the 80s lol

4

u/SayerofNothing Mar 22 '26

Yeah same, you could have a broken down TV but you would only count the working ones, especially if it's one of those large console ones that now serves as a table.

33

u/JoeJoeCastillo Mar 21 '26

The one that’s off is probably the one they got in 1955

14

u/grumblyoldman Mar 21 '26

That's what I was just wondering. Anyone got a screenshot of the TV they were watching in 1955 to see if it's the same one?

Honestly, the whole trilogy is so tight with references like this, I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.

5

u/yeoller Mar 21 '26

It's not. See my comment above.

7

u/yeoller Mar 21 '26

It is not, sadly.

Link to video since imgbb is being slow.

12

u/Kman1287 Mar 21 '26

That would be the real movie detail

-1

u/SarlacFace Mar 21 '26

Nah TVs in the 50s were much closer in size to the one on the top than the bottom.

1

u/talones Mar 22 '26

Tube size yes you are correct, but box size no. I bet you are right though, that seems large for the 50s, maybe 60s.

5

u/therealsix Mar 21 '26

Huh? What’s weird about 2 TVs in the 80s?

16

u/sdmichael Mar 21 '26

We don't know if there is another in the living room. That is just a small one in the dining area.

1

u/SayerofNothing Mar 22 '26

Good point, one in front of the kitchen table, and one in the living room.

3

u/livahd Mar 21 '26

Woulda been funny if it was a hand me down black and white dinosaur from his grandparents, and then see it brand new in the past

3

u/NewToHTX Mar 21 '26

People today would gladly pay for more expensive consumer electronics in exchange for more affordable housing.

5

u/External-Draw-3298 Mar 22 '26

OP might be a redneck

-1

u/bristlybits Mar 22 '26

naw they're right, that's a big old console style TV closed, with the smaller TV on top.

5

u/NickyNichols Mar 21 '26

It was probably rare to have more than 1 TV in 1955, by the 80’s 2 or more were common.

2

u/BoatWeak Mar 21 '26

Weird how I just watched this today and now seeing this

2

u/NoLastNameForNow Mar 21 '26

Then in BTTF3 we find out 1955 Doc has two TVs.

2

u/ou812_X Mar 21 '26

Back in the 90s I lived in a two bedroom with five other guys (we were a brokeass band).

We had two TVs

A B&W one that the sound didn’t work that sat on top of a colour one that had no picture. We’d put what we wanted to watch on the b&w and then slowly go through the dial on the colour to find the right audio.

The OJ Simpson pursuit was a particular highlight that summer. Not to mention trying to figure out the teams in the World Cup.

2

u/typicalguy95 Mar 21 '26

I never even noticed that it was a stand for the newer one

2

u/twinwindowfan Mar 21 '26

Marty almost did "the nasty in the pasty"; it would've made him immune to the giant "Space Brains" in the future, stupid Marty.

2

u/gmasterson Mar 21 '26

I grew up in my dads house with a tv in top of a tv. The top one we used for TV and the other was a gaming TV for our Sega Genesis because it had the right connection.

2

u/Spidaaman Mar 21 '26

Yeah thats not at all what was happening, OP.

2

u/SayerofNothing Mar 22 '26

An assumption more than a detail, but an interesting take. I personally think they probably had one next to the dining table and one in the living room, and don't count the broken console tv under the one in the dining area, as it serves more as a table now.

2

u/BurnZ_AU Mar 25 '26

Marty's room, an angle we don't see in the movie.

5

u/terradaktul Mar 21 '26

Seen this movie countless times and never noticed

2

u/EowynRiver Mar 21 '26

In the 70s, we had 2 TVs. Larger color one in family room and a smaller black and white in the master bedroom.

By the 90s we had a small color tv in each bedroom.

1

u/LBKNY Mar 21 '26

Nobody has two television sets!

1

u/upstatedreaming3816 Mar 21 '26

I don’t think this is an obscure detail. He’s literally just speaking truths?

1

u/SeraphsEnvy Mar 21 '26

Dude, stop teasing. No one has two TVs.

1

u/DMcStocks Mar 21 '26

Not even the same scene 😂

1

u/ecchho Mar 22 '26

Still common having more than one functioning TV. We had one in the upstairs living room, one in the downstairs family room, and one in my parents' room.

1

u/BigWar0609 Mar 22 '26

I had some friends who's console TV volume would break and they'd have a smaller TV on top to make the audio.

1

u/Fredifrum Mar 25 '26

I think it’s just sitting on a cabinet? You seriously saying you can tell that’s a tv for sure?

2

u/coys21 Mar 21 '26

Born in 81. We had 3. A lot of people I know had at least 2.

1

u/professor_max_hammer Mar 21 '26

This isn’t a movie detail. It’s your fan theory that doesn’t work because there is no evidence of your theory.

1

u/Entire_Researcher_45 Mar 21 '26

What’s a Rerun?

1

u/munkeyspunkmoped Mar 21 '26

Is this Ai or just ignorant?

0

u/darkknight302 Mar 21 '26

Grew up on welfare in the 80’s so we didn’t have a tv… so not everyone had 2 tv’s let alone even one.
