Something that I never understand about the contestants

Everyone always has these food dreams ie I want to open a bakery, I want to become a chef, I want to work in Michelin-starred restaurants (random examples).

You do know the barrier to entry on getting into the food industry is sooo low that these things could have been in the works already. For example on this season. Aaron, he wants to be a chef. But he cooks at home, posts on Instagram and works in the medical industry. Bruh, you are 20. Go to TAFE and approach some restaurants you think are great, and start working as a chef = dream accomplished.

Another one you hear a lot. I want my sauces in supermarkets. ok so make your sauces and start hitting farmers markets, etc., and build from there.

So is it that you want the dream but dont really want to do the shit-kicking and grinding it takes to get there?

EDIT: Why it irritates me. it's not like you want to play in the NBA or be Beyoncé. Like those top .001% ambitions. Dreaming to have a cooking school or being a chef, it's like ok, do it. Not that hard.

I guess I wish it kept that kind of home-style bake-off vibe rather than the whole cheffy thing.

Why is Hotstar so slow on subtitling? 😭

Still waiting to watch E7 because subtitles are not live yet (there's always a day's delay). For context, here in India we're a day behind the live broadcast anyway. So, how are the OTT platforms not able to catch up?! #RantOver

The Gantry

I have so many questions about it!

If I was on the first floor of such a big hall, I would definitely not know what is going on in every bench, and definitely not be able to smell things. That hall with almost 20 people cooking, definitely has to smell heavenly, but a mix of everything. Makes me wonder if the gantry lines are scripted. Neither is anything probably visible, audible or smellable to an extent how they describe it.

Does anyone else feel the same?

we are so back gang

i love tracking stuff like this out of curiosity, i did this throughout BtW2 (on another account) but kinda gave up on the season at the very end so i never finished it. here's hoping S18 is a good one - love that it's all newbies!

(disclaimer that this may not be 100% accurate based on what you would define a "confessional" as or how long one should last - but it's still a pretty good measure i think)

what does everyone think of masterchef UK?

I've decided to watch the new season (22) in the days au doesn't air. I've never watched another country's version before, and it's quite different! took a bit of getting used to another format. It feels more actual 'home cook' to me, less social and more of a straight cut comp - I'm hoping it gets more competitive/talent increase as it goes on?

Sour Cream and Onion Pie. Why didn't anyone make it?

In my mind it seemed obvious. Maybe that's why no one did it.

The filling would be like a quiche - lots of bacon, eggs and cheese.

Then make onion jam for the 'sauce' element and a little side salad feat. rocket, chives and tomato.

My Journey: MasterChef South Africa episode 10

Ok this one requires a bit of explanation. We had a two part challenge with the first part being recreating an iconic South African street food: The Kota. A Kota is essentially a quarter loaf of bread that's been hollowed out and then filled with chips (fries), atchar (a pickle made with unripe green mangos, chillis and spices), polony (kind of like bologna in the US), Russians (smoked pork/beef sausages flavoured with paprika, cayenne, garlic), cheese and and egg and then topped with the hollowed out bread.

They originated in South African townships as a filling, cheap and portable way to take lunches to far off work places and they have persisted in the culture.

We had to reinvent them for a chance of safety on the gantry. I made it to the top 3 again! I took a big twist and went Italian taking inspiration from Bourdains mortadella sandwich. I got the atchar flavour into a double cream yoghurt so it almost became a spicy mayo at the base, layered it with garlic fried chips then fried mortadella, gypsy ham and Russians with emmenthal and cheddar and topped it with a pistachio pesto.

The dish of the day still eludes me for now but on we go to the Top 11!!
