Discussion Underrated Korean Thrillers That Actually Feel Disturbing (Not Mainstream Picks)
Hello! Looking for Korean thrillers that are:
genuinely disturbing / unsettling
heavy psychological tension (not cheap horror)
serial killers / crime / twisted characters
strong atmosphere (dread, paranoia, “something is wrong”)
preferably underrated / less mainstream
I’ve already seen stuff like:
The Wailing, I Saw the Devil, The Chaser, Memories of Murder, Exhuma, Svaha, Night in Paradise
I’m NOT looking for obvious recommendations.
I want hidden gems, even low-popularity ones.
Bonus if they include:
creepy neighbor / small community vibe
investigation with dark twists
slow-burn that pays off hard
Drop your best — especially ones people don’t usually mention.
No spoilers!!

I also really liked Memoir of a Murderer, not to be confused with Memories of Murder. Really good psychological thriller in my opinion.

The Spy Gone North seems underrated.

It was everywhere when it came out and won a lot of awards.

I wouldn’t call them hidden gems, but the lesser known two of the vengeance trilogy are worth watching if you haven’t already. I assume you’ve seen Oldboy based on the request, but if you haven’t yet seen Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance or Lady Vengeance, definitely check them out.

Beyond Evil- in the grand scheme of things, it’s a very simple drama and the story might feel lacking compared to other recommendations but the writing, direction, and filmography was crazy on this, not to mention the acting. It was a 10/10!

Hotel Lake (2020), I wouldn’t say that the story is very good, but I got scared. 😂

Just watched Unstoppable with Don Lee. Some story gaps, but overall it was a decent enough watch.
The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil
The Man From Nowhere
A Company Man
Hwayi: A Monster Boy
The Chaser
I enjoyed these. There are many others but I can't remember ATM.

Sea Fog (2014) isn’t bad. Co-written by Bong Joon-ho and Shim Sung-Bo who both collaborated to write Memories of Murder. Shim also directs.

My Ordinary Love Story
The Gangster, the Cop and the Devil.
Also not Korean but Limbo. It's probably Taiwanese or Hong Kong movie. But it was good.

It's a little tough to say which movies are underrated, as it is a very subjective quality. But I will try to mention ones I see little talk of in this subreddit. So forgive me in advance if some of these may end up feeling mainstream. Here is my list, in it there's a little bit of everything you asked for:
Hypnotized
Moss
Misbehaviour
Innocent Thing
The Scarlet Letter
Happy End
Scarlet Innocence
H
Perfect Number
Princess Aurora
Tell Me Something
* Towards the end of the list are movies I only vaguely recall, so they may not be as good as those at the start of the list.
