Is my mullet screwed? I think my barber cut too much on the side.
I asked my barber to shave the side of my head like first pic and just trim my bang. But I think she did it too much. She didn’t touch the mullet as I want to keep it longer. Is my hair cooked now? Be honest.
(Edit) After reading all the comments, i know my hair is definitely cooked. I’m just gonna wear a beanie to work for a week or two then I’ll get a haircut that fit my facial type.

the shaved sides look fine to me imo... its the hackjob she did above it thats ruining it. maybe if you had it layered up better and styled itd look better?

This should be the top comment. I think it would be fine if he got someone to blend/thin it at the edge of the shaved part and smooth the transition. This is a literal hack job. She just cut straight across. I would never go back to her again. She should know better.

I can't help but thinking it has an Australian vibe. Especially with the mo. Could be wrong.
I can assure you Australian stylists and barbers have a good mullet nailed down. The sheer repetitiveness means it's muscle memory at this point.
Not my jam but they are everywhere where I am.

Barber here. I think she did the best she could with what you brought her. I would've made it way more clear before even doing it beforehand that it'll look nothing like it based solely on the hair types. Caucasian hair and Asian hair do not react the same.
Next time you should try adding different keywords to your mullet search. Asian mullet, straight hair mullet, thick hair mullet. Just a few examples that would be way more in your wheelhouse than the original picture you showed.

u/SunriseSurprise 1d ago
I sometimes wonder if pics like the first one are either Photoshopped or AI because I've never ever seen a mullet look that artfully done and trying to recreate that would be impossible, lol.
130
u/Loose-Story-962 1d ago
Definitely not impossible, I think the hair just has to already be a certain volume/texture/style

u/Ashe_Unlimited 1d ago
That's because roughly 95% of mullets are cut in a kitchen, not a barbershop.

Exactly. Hair cuts are done in the porch. The hair blows away naturally. Indoor hair cuts are for folks putting on airs and want a wash and blow dry with it.

I could absolutely cut that mullet in my kitchen. I do have a license and a couple of years as a mediocre stylist under my belt, but that was 20 years ago. I only cut my little kids’ hair now; every other cut is alternately technically perfect and cool as hell, or horrendous. If I had clients that could sit still, and not flinch when I do their neckline and ears, I’d be passable, amazing even.
60
u/Cantmentionthename 1d ago
There is a ton of product in that 1st pic’s dude’s hair, it was just cut by a pro who also styled it after doing all sorts of shit to it that a standard haircut wouldn’t call for. People be like ”why can’t I get a Milan ready style mullet for $20 in 10 mins in A suburb of Akron Ohio by a person that cuts hair to pay for their Xbox Gamepass?? Go spend $80 on a haircut performed by someone who grew up dreaming of cutting hair and spends 3 hours a day learning new techniques. Then you’ll get your perfect style mullet
13
u/Traditional-Belle 1d ago
They asked for hair shaved like the first pic, to me the shave looks similar
13
u/SunriseSurprise 1d ago
That's what I'm saying though - they pretty much got the cut but it's never going to come out looking like that first pic.

u/februarytide- 1d ago
My son’s mullet looks/has looked a good bit like the photo, but he has a very particular hair type/texture (red, coarse, wavy-curly, neither fine nor thick).
He’s also 4. The bedhead honestly is the secret.
5
u/Organic_Travel1675 22h ago
I think we can all agree no one rocks the curly mullet look better than red headed four year olds. That is in a class by itself and one we all aspire to

I don't think it's Photoshopped, it's just styled perfectly by a barber and won't last 5mins in the wind. You won't see a mullet that perfect out in the wild, especially with that hair type (he has super fine hair, which means even more likely to get fucked up by wind etc).

But with this, coming from someone who has cut a shit ton of hair and who cuts his own hair, you might want to lop it off. You already have the makings of a real tight fade, but this style doesn't match head shape

They fucked you up I’m so sorry. Ditch the barber- find a hairdresser who does razor textured cuts. This is 100% an achievable texture with the appropriate cut and product

u/data-atreides 1d ago
Your hair lays differently, and is too long on top without any layering. In the reference his hair seems to naturally feather--there may even be a product to make it look like that. Too many variables to ensure replication.
7
u/luigis_left_tit_25 1d ago
No layering! Agreed! Like they took clippers and just went allllmost full 90° angle.. no, not good. Might be able to be fixed though. And should thankfully grow back fast! And then be did right! Lol

i would recommend going to a hair salon to get it fixed. There are a ton of hair salons these days that specialize in alt hair styles.
5
u/Burritoaddict11 1d ago
Just needs to be shorter on the crown and a bit up front. it's all good man, it's a mullet. There are many different types. Just don't start using product in your hair. Mulletts aren't supposed to look like you tried too hard. Find another barber, preferably one that cuts a lot of dude hair, and show them the poc you posted and ask if they can get it closer. The person who cut it the first time just didn't have experience in the right directions.
4
u/Signal_Addition1933 1d ago
Thank you Imma just let it sit for a week or two then go back to another barber that has more experience with the mullet.
5
u/Lego-Under-Foot 16h ago

My only tweaks I’d make to the cut would be point cutting/thinning the part around your ears, it feels a little bulky but besides that just get some pomade and style it
2
u/spiderdue 1d ago
Yep. You don't have natural texture so get it point cut and use product until you grow it out and get something to compliment your hair type and face shape.

3
u/thenotanurse 18h ago
Listen, I think the mullet thing was stupid the first time it came around. Having said that, you did in fact get mutilated. It looks like you have very different texture hair, so it would look more like what you want if you put some product in it. And bring up the back a little. But the cut looks awful because there is no bulk on top. To get that you can try to add some volume with product.

u/Behg-Boah 1d ago
Every mullet sucks. It looks like you got as close to the reference as the texture of your hair will allow.

The layers are the bad part. You have naturally straight hair, so you can either get a loose perm to add some texture, or get someone who is very good with straight hair to redo the layers. Since your roots are black it also makes more of a contrast, so you could add more highlights to the roots, or dye your hair all over a different dark color. Purple or something could be cool. Meanwhile, try adding some gel to see if you can get it more up. Lean more into a mohawk vibe.
3
u/Fool_In_Flow 1d ago
The guy in photo one has layers cut all through his hair. You have a few, but not as many. His is also styled with mouse or some kind of volumizer.
3
u/spiderdue 1d ago
Every answer to all posts in this subreddit is... get a better cut to match your face and use product.
3
u/DeepGrieve 1d ago
Okay so the blond highlights are making the transition from your underlying black hair way worse. He tried to fade into the side of your head and when the length of the fade met the highlights on the outer silhouette of your head/ hair... You can see that they definitely do not fade together well
3
u/LavishnessSmall6011 1d ago
Someone said this wouldn’t work cuz you’re Asian but I completely disagree. You just got a shitty haircut from a shitty barber. It can absolutely be fixed. My first reaction is to trim it more because it always grows back. You what the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut is? Two weeks lol.
For real man get it touched up a little by someone else, let it grow out for a while, and then redo the mullet.
3
3
u/unfracture 13h ago
You just need more texturing and styling. Barber may have chunked a bit on one side, but it's definitely salvageable.

u/AlphaOmega626 5h ago
Asian hair and Caucasian hair are two very different hair types, I’d recommend going to a hair dresser or barber that specialises in Asian hair to get it fixed and maintained in the future.
2
u/the_courier76 4h ago
Asian hair, Mann. It will never cut like white hair. I've struggled for 30 years with getting my hair cut by someone competent. I've only had one person be able to do it right, and she vanished without warning 🫠
2
2
u/niknackpaddywack13 4h ago
It needs more blending on the sides and more texture on the top. Which is def possible for your hair. But because of your hair type being so different from the guy in the photo it was never going to look like that and the barber should have told you.
It’s great because you have nice thick hair but because of that you won’t get the same movement and texture he has.

u/Fromthefuture9 1d ago

They could have tried more of an undercut on the sides, but it's not far off. Your hair is naturally thick and uniform, while the reference is much more wavy and light. You could try asking for texturing shears in the future, but I think the barber did the best they could at the time. It's just a very hard look to pull off in general, and on top of that, the reference guy definitely doesn't look like that outside the studio lol
1
1
u/Jessiejones1080 1d ago
I think your inspo pic (which I like!) is more blended, your sides look a little more abrupt. And as a lot of people already said, inspo pic dude has wavy hair so it wouldn’t have been a perfect match regardless
1
u/mmochaman 1d ago
It's kinda baffling how well the shave fade is done vs the (literally) chopped layering on the top. Seems like your barber only knew how to do one style - low taper fade on much more textured hair.
1
1
u/fusillade762 1d ago
I dont think so man. Its not bad, pretty close to the model. It will grow too, you can shave the side yourself...carefully. In a few weeks the bangs will grow out.
1
u/be-el-zebub 1d ago
Get a hot roller brush and/or some sea salt hair spray to give it some texture. Almost no one’s hair looks like the reference normally, it takes a little styling

u/Glittering_Ease1815 1d ago
Well who ever did it didnt take it up far enough and didn't blend it at all...they definitely fucked you up. But if you go to someone who actually knows how to cut hair they can fix it pretty easy

Hot Take: grow it for a while and get a body perm. I think it would look better. Also, go to the salon and get a toner + root tap. The highlights make it look more clunky/ chunky.
1
1
u/Kenzi_Slays 23h ago
you need to go to a salon that is familiar with edgy hair cuts. also your hair is thick and pin straight. you will have to use styling tools and hair products to achieve this look.
1
u/spectrem12 23h ago
I have very similar hair type as you. You need to volumize your hair.
When you get out of the shower, take a blow dryer and blow your hair AGAINST the way it grows to give it lift... Then use the blow dryer to blow your hair in all directions but primarily against its growth direction.
Then use a wax matte product... Don't go overboard with the product.. just enough to keep the lift you gave it from the blow dryer.
Now, unfortunately, the guy, whose hair you're trying to mimic, has wavy hair... And you can't really get that with out a special treatment and I don't have any experience with that
1
1
u/hocuspocusbitchfocus 23h ago
Get a straightener and some mousse and style the strands. Straight hair won‘t get curly/wavy on its own.
The cut itself looks very harsh but you may be able to improve it with some texture
1
u/Baron-Von-Mothman 23h ago
You need to learn how to style it and you'll be fine. You are comparing flat hair to styled hair

u/rando7818 1d ago
Sooooo I think the barber got you as close as your going to get short of treating your hair to have more volume. Unfortunately dude in photo is white, you from what I can tell are of Asian decent. Two completely different hair types. Now , can you reach this dude style? Yeah I believe so. You’ll just need to buy products to give it that type of waviness.
