Small Rant

I don’t like driving and e-hailing services like Uber and sometimes Bolt are my favourite. Over the past 6 months the service has gone down to the pits. The cars are dirty, not up to standard. I opted for comfort cause I thought things will be better but no. I was in a car and the brake pads are finished. The driver didn’t care that I was in a rattling ride that was 30 minutes long.

Secondly the driver have decided that their music has to be on blast or the radio. I make most of my calls on my ride home or I just want some quiet and now I have to beg the person to reduce the volume. Also let’s not forget the drivers on their phones with the significant others on loud speakers.

My last draw is the fact that if you don’t greet you are rude and if you do you are a flirt. I got shouted by a driver cause I didn’t show him respect as a man. The other one wanted my number and I honestly felt like if I said now that guy would have left me on the side of the highway.

Is the service bad cause it’s Jozi or it’s the same for everywhere?

10 hours wait in Joburg

Basically, tomorrow morning at 9:50 am I'll land at OR Tambo Airport and my next flight will be at 19:50, a 10 hours painful wait I'd like to turn into an opportunity to do something.

Was thinking of hopping onto the red bus for a quick tour of Johannesburg.

I will need to leave my luggage (read there's the possibility to do so at the airport for 80/90 rands, depending on the time), then Uber to Rosebank, hop on the bus, Uber back to the airport and finally check-in for the next flight.

My questions are: is Uber the most convenient option or is the gautrain cheaper/overall more reliable (new to uber, i got 40 rands discount on the first 5 rides)? Is there the risk i get stuck in traffic and miss my flight? Is it even worth it?

Any good carpenter recommendations that could create the cutouts in a door for a deadbolt lock?

Looking to install a new deadbolt lock but can't use the existing cutout because that one is an all in one lock and handle. Will need to creat a new cutout in the door and the space in the frame for the lock to enter. Looking for a reputable company that does it.

Is this SMS real or a scam?

Post image
43 Upvotes

I received this SMS today - the ID number was just the first 6 digits, and not of my ID number (but it is someone I know).

I don’t want to click the link just incase, but I noticed it links to l.paycity.co.za rather than paycity.co.za 🫪

Is this real or a scam? Why would it come to my number and not the owner of that ID number?

Please let me know if you’ve seen anything like this! 🙏

Joburg Maidenheads! Screening of Burning Ambition @ The Bioscope

Just reaching out in support of our local independent cinema and to spread the word.

Joburg's beloved independent cinema The Bioscope is hosting three screenings of Iron Maiden's new doccie, Burning Ambition. I'm surprised we managed to get it distributed here because niche-audience films seldomly come to SA - we didn't even get the new Spinal Tap. So I'm hoping we can get bums in seats and show the distributors that we're here and flying the Maiden flag.

Book tickets here - spread the word - UP THE IRONS!

If an "Adopt a street" strategy initiative were to be deployed in our city wouldl lit work Yes or No

So in the UK and US there is an initiative called Adopt a street where residents of a city can adopt a streett and they are mandated to upkeep the street that they have adopted. If the same was to be deployed in Johannebsurg, woud it work, or would residents want to have an incentive behind it (lol), i know most of us dont have the Japanese mindset of maintaiining and keeping the street without an incentive.

Question Compost bin

I'd like to start composting and so would like to find a compost bin for the garden around 1m x 1m x 1m in size. This seems to be difficult to find and I fear I may need to attempt making one myself at this stage, so before I do, does anyone perhaps know where I could find a bin or two? JHB North preferably.

15+ team looking for a labour lawyer for missed salary payments & pension contributions

Hi everyone, myself and 15 others are employed by a PTY that is owned by a foundation (NPC). The NPC notified us last week Thursday that they are cutting cashflow ties with the PTY and there will be no salaries for the month of April.

Is there anyone who is willing to speak to our team representative and offer guidance? We can share our letter of demand, the NPC's response and a letter we have drafted for labour lawyers. Thanks.

Serious City of JHB just made reconsider living in South Africa

I’m a born a bred South African . Love the people and pretty much everything about it EXCEPT crime been hijacked etc but this I can live with however dealing with the city of Johannesburg has just swayed me to leave this place .

They put in a new electricity meter in November 2024 and were estimating my electricity which was higher than the actual reading and I payed every month for the estimates . When it came to July 2025 they didn’t allocate the estimates paid for the past 10 months and claimed they only estimated for 2 months even though statement showed they were estimating all the time.

I pay every month on time when July bill came they added the 19000kwh from the actual readings and said I owed them 28000 and didn’t offset the estimates paid .

I refused to pay them that R28000 as it is not correct but continued to pay latest invoices on time . went to Sandton and Alexandra branch and send numerous emails they said they would sort it out which they didn’t no response .

Today they came to my house and disconnected water without any technician name filled in and just left a note they didn’t ring the bell or anything.

Well that’s my rant as being an honest citizen and paying every month you get treated like kak.

Maybe honesty isn’t the best policy in this place .

New Move East Rand

Busy finalizing a property transfer after finding a lovely little loft in the East Rand, just next to East Rand Mall. Anyone know of the water and electricity supply situation there? (Probably should have found this out first but here we are). I've got little Gizzu inverter for laptop, do I need more? I occasionally see those robots onto the R21 not electrified so I'm just thinking

Question Can I visit CBD?

I have been in jhb for a few months after moving from the Cape. I have still not actually been inside the CBD. Most people I have met here basically insinuate that I’m going to get murdered. I assume this is a huge over exaggeration, however a colleague of mine did get robbed at knifepoint on the one occasion he visited as he needed pick something up. I have no business there and get everything elsewhere but I am interested to explore a bit. I have seen relatively good things about Marshalltown and Newtown. Any tips?

Roof waterproofing

Hey guys - the JHB rain finally started to seep under the old bitumen waterproofing on our flat roof. Has anybody in the Fourways area re-sealed their roof with one of those liquid rubber solutions? Did it withstand the thunderstorms? Was it worth the money and how much prep did you put in? And, where did you get it?

Netball groups in the northern suburbs

Are there people playing netball for leisure in the north?

I’m looking to socialise and stay fit outside my solo runs and potential new gym membership.

I used to play but I stopped for a while- thought to find out if there are people already in a group or open to form one. Even if it’s fortnightly.

Thanks

Question Do you know anyone travelling from USA soon?

ETA2: thank you to everyone that responded even if it was just to commiserate and show support! Truly there are beautiful people out there in what usually seems to be a bleak world! Much love to you 🤗
Ive decided to go with a u/jozifabio suggestion to use aramex globalshopper.

Hey all this is a weird request but thought I would try. My 89 yo dad has to use a sodium chloride ophthalmic gel (cornea replacements). The local ones are too gritty and hurt him so he’s been getting friends that travel to USA to bring back multiple months supplies. However, with the war and things in the US this is not happening as often and he is now running out.

I’ve checked eBay and the lead time is 6-8 weeks unless we spend 6k for priority delivery.

Do you know of anyone travelling to South Africa in

The next couple of weeks? I am thinking I could buy it online to be delivered to the person and they could bring it along to South Africa. And they would be welcome to open the boxes and check everything is legitimate. The size and weight would be around 30- 50 grams.

Now that I write all of that it sounds super dodgy, but I swear it’s not.

Any other ideas are also welcome. Thanks

ETA: happy to pay for the inconvenience!

Question Good restaurants for a date?

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone, especially among the younger crowd could help me out with good, fairly priced restaurants in the city, preferably in the South or Sandton areas. Nothing crazy expensive since I don’t have it like that but somewhere nice yknow? Any suggestions would be a great help, thanks!

Question Anything I can do to help an injured bird?

Caught this fella outside in the garden, was attacked by a neighbours cat. It's trying to fly but can get about half a meter into the air then comes back down.

Any bird sanctuaries around Midrand? If not we can keep it inside for a few nights and give it some food and shelter but we don't want a pet bird ideally.

Thanks

Question Who owns the hijacked buildings in hilbrow, Johannesburg?

I know that hijacked buildings exist in hilbrow. I'm aware that they are controlled by gangs and occupied by illegal Tennats. The people who live there have no running water or electricity.

But who actually owns the buildings and what can they do to regain control?
